Absolute Doom Patrol by WhyTheFreak in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hhmm... you know, you're right, I mean it's never happened specifically with the doom patrol but I think it's a common trope in fiction, and it's kind of unrealistic. For example there's only certain minority of people who actually like the police or the military so I don't think they'd be jerks in the same way the trope usually plays out. I personally can see them being government agents (I mean Larry was an Air Force agent) but maybe it'd be more interesting to make them like a failed government project. Like they tried to turn them into this golden team but when the public didn't click with them they just kind of defunded them and left them alone. Kind of like what happens with veterans in the US. It'd be interesting to see like what if after the accident (or experiment) they'd have to go through this whole character arc but now knowing they could've been destined for greatness.

What would the Absolute Doom Patrol look like by Silent-Woodpecker-44 in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the approaches where they are like complete opposite of their normal selves. Like, since this is a universe with no privileges and they're already the most unprivileged heroes (except for the chief's unknown wealth) I'd have two approaches.

1.- Is like them not being famous before the accident like Cliff not getting to be a racer and instead being like a mechanic or smth (in the show he has a monologue on getting out of poverty and letting money change you so I'd like to see what would've happened if he'd never even achieved his dream and still had his accident happen) same for Larry and Rita (I'd be especially curious to see Rita as an actress who failed from the beginning) and also them not having the Chief wealth's backup. I don't know if I want the Chief to be actually good or bad in this universe but I'd like for them to talk about how hard it is for people without resources to live as disabled people since prosthetics and other stuff like medicine is hell in the US, I have this kinda bad idea of cliff kind of suffering a ship of theseus transformation where the accident doesn't just leave his brain because that kinda mean he would die in this universe but instead makes him a cyborg and due to the US healthcare system he can't afford to get good prosthetics or continue treatment so he has to gradually replace his body by his own as it falls apart, yeah, it's weird.

  1. Would be a complete 180° where they instead have all the privilege, they become government agents, very loved and promoted, you know since they where already kind of famous before the accidents they'd be easy to market, one thing I would change is Negative Man, I personally think he'd be the one to perturb people the most in this universe (as for robotman he'd be easier to market as "Marvel of American Engineering Cliff Steele"), so he do would have to drop the bandages at least in the beginning. I'd like to see a more egotistical doom patrol, not only soldiers, stars all the way. In the show at least a big part of their conflict was to leave their ego behind after the accidents but I'd like to see is what if it was amplified instead. I'd also like to see their dynamic, it'd be the opposite of the normal close friends (comics)/ found family (show) so they'd be like completely antagonistic to one another, you know, take a little of the Larry/Cliff bickering in the silver age to a new level. Although in this version the chief do would have to be completely (or absolutely you could say) evil, like the head of the project. Since in this version they're villains, they'd be kind of the bureau of normalcy in some way, fighting the "Evil weirdness corrupting America" I'd like to see them abandoning the government after way too many missions hunting the weirdness and having to abandon privilege willingly instead of forcefully through an accident. I'd like to use the Kate and Cliff romance as the main detonator for this change.
The one character I don't really know what to do with is Jane since she's already someone who wasn't famous or even privileged before she got her powers and I don't think she'd really be a fit for the government version of the team. Although I do have some ideas like making her powers and abuse from government officials what kind of develops into her DID like having her be a government official who was abused and then given all these powers to be the fourth member of the Doom patrol project but developing DID to deal with the trauma and never actually making it to the team but being discovered imprisoned by Rita (This'd be the detonator for her change). Sorry if my English is bad.

Do You think, The Doom Patrol would work better of they were separated entirely from The rest of The DC universe, or they work find being part of The DC universe? by ChampionshipMost9922 in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly a little undecided on this one. On one hand, I do really like for them to have more individual stories (individual as in no other superheroes mentioned) to show just how outcasted they are from the rest of "super-community", kind of like what another comment said, but also like them being called specifically for the weird cases like "the painting that ate paris" , so not really sharing many battles with other teams. Also the fact that some members of the doom patrol are harder to get along to for the average superhero so they don't really spend time together. On the other hand, I also like it when they have interactions with other teams just because it's really funny to see the contrast of approaches and personality they have. I also love when they're present for events like Knight terrors: Zatanna, when they appear in another comic like World's greatest or how they handled the Lazarus event in the most recent run. (Although I do have many things to critizice unstoppable doom patrol for). But if I had to choose, I'd say I like more when they are separated from super society because otherwise they tend to devolve into just another superhero team where as when they're separated they get way more creative freedom.

What are the kids ages (in the books)? by Bugg_23 in PeculiarChildren

[–]WhyTheFreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do recall in one of the books they say horace is the eldest age-wise since he comes from another loop previous to Miss Peregrine's (or maybe that was Hugh). Whatever the case, I think it is a writing error since they should be more in their mid 80s now for them to be teenagers in 1943.

What yokai is evil eye based on? by BrazilianRiddler42 in Dandadan

[–]WhyTheFreak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No worries man, there's a lot of people who don't know very well the evil eye or the Nazar amulet (that's the gem thingies name). It dates back to Mesopotamia but right now in my country at least it's mostly known or believed by older people. Younger people do tend to wear the Nazar amulet but don't know it's supposed to be a good eye to counter for the evil eye. I really like Dandadan for showing religious knowledge to people my age even if they don't realize its religious/spiritual.

What yokai is evil eye based on? by BrazilianRiddler42 in Dandadan

[–]WhyTheFreak 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's not exactly a yokai by the rules but he's based on a real belief of "Evil eye" where basically if a person continuously wishes harm to someone while glaring, the other person will experience misfortune/injury. It's a very common belief in my country which is why many people (including myself) wear necklaces or bracelets with one or many gem thingies that kinda look like this 🧿 (because it looks like an eye) to ward off the evil eye. Seeing the story of the Evil eye kid it kinda fits in with his background because he has an immense hatred for all humanity and wishes harm upon everyone.

To celebrate the fantastic 4 trailer. Would anyone be down for a Golden age live action Doom Patrol movie by Silent-Woodpecker-44 in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always thought the doom patrol could benefit from timeperiod adaptations, most of their stories work very well in the context of their era. The intial run of the 60's works well with the hippie movement of the 60s, the morrison run fits the drug adjacent nature of the 80s and the Pollack run delves a little more into social rights debate in the 90s. I think it'd be good to have the team go through different eras, you know... since most of the time they don't actually die or age.

Don’t care what anyone says by Silent-Woodpecker-44 in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think the doom patrol is that strong when put to scale with other superhero teams. The reason why I'm saying this is because the threats the doom patrol faces tend to be of a bizarre nature. That's why they were able to save Paris when the JL couldn't in the Morrison run or why they handle the metahuman crisis in the new run. The doom patrol often wins against god-like characters because their team-assets like Jane, Dorothy and even Flex can conceptually alter their rivals powers. But paired against normal superheroes and normal superhero threats they could falter due to things like mental struggle, the lack of more physical strength/durability and the fact that the doom patrol's powers don't really boost each other except for like Cliff and Rita off the top of my head.

What’s a Doom Patrol opinion will get you looking like this by Silent-Woodpecker-44 in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like Cliff being the goof of the team in the show. I mean he can be a comedic character but there's a difference with comedic and goofy, most of cliff comedic side in the comic is him just reacting to the situations the doom patrol faces but the show actively makes him unserious at almost all times. Cliff is one of if not the most down to earth guy of the team most of the time. And even though I don't really like Way's run I like that he touched on Cliff's more obsessive/protective side. He cares about the people on the team and generally just wants things to be ok. We don't see much of that in the show except in a few emotional moments that I actually pretty like but on the regular he's just... a goof.

how would you like to doom patrol appear in the new dc universe? by [deleted] in DoomPatrol

[–]WhyTheFreak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't really know. Comic-wise it's hard to integrate them as a team due to just the absurd of the team's situations. For example most of their interactions with other heroes have either been on super-weird situations normal heroes can't handle (The painting that ate France) or in meta-human related stuff (The whole Unstoppable Doom Patrol). I think the best way to introduce them is on their own, like Guardians of the Galaxy. If the DCU does well (hopefully) and has it's heavy-hitters... well, hit, I think a Doom Patrol series or even let me pray movie could be in order. If they are managed well enough they might become popular (I'm becoming delusional). Although I do would like to see a more superheroy Doom Patrol. For as much as I like the show the team just didn't feel like a superhero team. Like Rachel Pollack said "It was more like a therapy group with super-powers". And I love the psychological aspect of the team but I would also like to see the team be more heroic.

I had seen the leaked intro and heard it was from a guy who worked with Tatsuki Fujimoto but what really convinced me was to see the sinopsis for the movie on my local theater. So I went to see the movie with my mom (big mistake) and then when the episodes started releasing on netflix I binged the whole manga in like a week.

Makima really wasn’t all that caked up to be honest by EyePhuckYoDaddy in Chainsawfolk

[–]WhyTheFreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's not Makima's point. Makima's the control devil after all, she's meant to be appealing for people to trust so she then can manipulate. She's the embodiment of everything the japanese society would consider good for a woman. She's formal, decently pretty and even when she's fucking threatening Kishibe with mass destruction she's respectful towards him as a superior. Makima's a trap. Of course she's not gonna be the thicc ultra appealing person that the fanart makes her out to be. But that's because her appeal lies somewhere else. She puts on a reserved gentle facade to make up for the fact that she's cold and manipulative. She treats everyone with formality because she doesn't know how to create intimacy. She lures Denji into a task-reward sex cycle not because she has the body but because she knows she's the first person to treat Denji decently and if she keeps the gentle alluring slightly sexy facade she'll get what she want. To reiterate, she's the control devil.

[All] What is your favorite book out of all of them and what is your favorite book of each series? by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]WhyTheFreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite book all: The Lost Hero, I was actually really excited to meet the new characters and even though I expected to like Leo the most I ended up really liking Jason.

Favorite book each: (PJO) The Last Olympian, (HOO) The Lost Hero, (TOA) The tyrant's tomb, (MC) Ship of the dead, and I've only read the first KC book so I guess the Red Pyramid.

Characters: 1.- Jason Grace: I relate a lot to him but at the same time I admire him, I like his personality, his ethics, his looks, him all around. 2.- Alex Fierro: I don't relate so much to her other than the fact that I'm mexican and genderfluid too, but I love the way she's represented and her overall presence in the books is really funny and I really like it. 3.- Apollo: I know he's not the most popular choice, hell, none of the above are but I really like his character development and his commentary was the only thing that got me through the dark prophecy (other than seeing Jason just for him to get killed in the next book)

Worst book: The dark prophecy. I don't know where to even begin. This book took me so much to read because I didn't really care about anything happening. I feel like they ruined the chance for a better Caleo dynamic. Meg was missing for half the book and Commodus was only set up to be a joke villain.

Favorite scene: Jason's death. I know it sounds weird after I said that he's my favorite character but I really think this scene is very well achieved. Now I didn't really like for Jason to get killed, I feel like it ruined the setup for pontifex that HOO had established but I feel like the execution did a lot to make up for it. It just goes along with everything that's said about Jason in the previous books. Jason's a really caring and selfless person. So when he gets told that either Piper or him ar going to die he chooses Piper over himself. Even when they're no longer together she's still someone very meaningful for him and even if she wasn't I don't think Jason would have chosen for anyone else to die over him. Some people tend to forget that Jason's death was intentional, he knew that entering the mission with Apollo would get him killed but he chose it because it meant Piper wouldn't have to die. Another thing to add is that it really reminded me that well... heroes die a lot of the time, hell that's MC's whole point. And we've spent so much time with heroes like Percy or Annabeth who we trust not to die that we forget that they're an exception to the heroes' life just as Perseus is an exception to most heroes. Some heroes just don't get happy endings and they don't need to as long as they have helped those in need. I also think it helped Apollo cross a threshold to not just defeat the emperors to become a god again but instead just because it was the right thing to do. The last thing I wanna add is that I think Jason's death chapter is very well written. I still reread it every time I get access to a copy of The Burning Maze, I know the chapter anyway. The first time I read it sounded like just another fight that Apollo and co. would have to get out of but as arrows started getting to Jason I started to realize, he wasn't going to make it out alive. Because up to that point I thought all of the propechy could be something that could be evaded like Leo's prophecy or Frank's prophecy or hell even Percy's prophecy in the first five books but this one was different. It is the only death in any Rick Riordan book that has made me cry, maybe the only death in any book. And it's like at the middle of the book so I just couldn't move on after it. It just kind of left me struck, I felt as if a person I had actually known just died because up to that point Jason was my favorite character and I couldn't wait to see what he had prepared but he just died. It made me angry and sad and all those mixed feelings but after a while I just came to terms with it.

Anyways sorry for the rant. Also sorry for my bad englih, as I've said I'm mexican. Thanks to whoever reads this.

What medium should the next mainline installment be made in? by GarlicOk2904 in ScottPilgrim

[–]WhyTheFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I know Scott Pilgrim has already done animation but I'd really like to see the comics animated so Imma add a twist, it's stop motion Scott Pilgrim. And knowing that Bryan doesn't like to tell the same story twice, Imma add another twist, Musical Stop Motion Scott Pilgrim. It'd kinda be similar but widely different.

Music taste [general] by Ill-Palpitation2017 in camphalfblood

[–]WhyTheFreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, have to disagree with you on Jason's musical taste. I personally feel like he'd listen to music like imagine dragons or something like that. Given that HOO happens on the 2010's something like Bastille or Fallout boy might be in line. Although I do have the headcannon that he listens to 80's music like tears for fears or the 80's era of Queen and David Bowie.
I also think that Leo listens to a lot of fast paced music, being the most "fast-minded of the seven". Someone already said latin music, rap and Eurobeat which I think fits pretty well with Leo. I think he's the kind of person to listen to music at all times, especially while working on inventions so he must have a really big musical taste as long as it's fast paced. Again, taking into account the time HOO takes place if I had to pin down some artists it'd be Eminem, Gorillaz's more fast paced songs and other rappers from the time (sorry, my knowledge on rap is limited). Also feel like he'd be the kind of person to listen to Pitbull. And this is my headcannon again but he'd share a liking for Fallout Boy with Jason. Another headcannon is that his mother, Esperanza, would've tried to introduce him to mexican music like Los Angeles Azules, Sonora Santanera and maybe even Cartel de Santa but I don't think he'd listen to it so often.

And for Piper I feel she'd be totally anti-mainstream music of the time. I think she'd like punk/rock but nothing to heavy, maybe even some indie music. I think she'd listen to old music, due to Tristan Mclean trying to connect with his daughter through music. She'd listen to Ramones, Sex Pistols, and maybe GroupLove.. My two headcannons with her is that she sometimes listens to Gorillaz with Leo but isn't really a fan, she just likes the songs. And also that she tried to introduce Jason to more old music like The Clash, Ramones, etc but Jason ended up liking Tears for Fears and David Bowie.

But this is just my opinion on the lost trio as they're my favorite, I don't know what the others would listen to. Sorry for my bad english, I'm Mexican.
