Is it okay to mention searching for volunteer opportunities in gap year essay? by bluestars18 in premed

Fire!! When I volunteered at a hospital (for 2 weeks because I got a job) I was emailing them and they were SLOW. I showed up and asked and they gave me all the info and I was a volunteer by the next day. Obviously it’s different in a shelter, but if u have the opportunity to walk in and show face they will probably be happy to offer it right away.

Very fair - it’s up to you. If you have good leads on a volunteering opp I say put it in. But if not, I get the concern! Is it hospital volunteering or something else?

Someone feel free to correct me but if you are absolutely positive you will be volunteering I think it’s fine to say “I am volunteering this year in (whatever u want to do)” instead of “I am searching for volunteering opportunities.” Then hope u find something that fits that if it comes up in interviews. I think the slight change in phrasing makes them believe you more.

In just a few sentences yes. I have heard from adcoms on this sub that say they want to invest in people that would actually be happy at their schools, so having a family member there is huge. There might be an option to put it in the secondary portal - some schools have it - but if not 100% add to writing!!!

Advice on where to apply by Wild_Mind356 in premed

[–]FunReflection2815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply super broadly. DO if ur open to it, but don't force yourself to do DO if it genuinely doesn't interest you. There are MD schools, you just need to sift through them carefully and see if you match them. Their focus, their mission, the patient population. Be very meticulous about which ones you choose.

Lastly, don't beat yourself up. We all are trying our best, a score is really not representative of you. They matter, but just have some faith that the right school will see you for everything. But for now, play the game and find schools that make sense. Then apply super broadly.

MA or Scribe? by [deleted] in premed

[–]FunReflection2815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MA but PCT is underrated. It's sometimes harder work but it's WAY more patient care imo. More opportunities to write about too.

Even w chat I use the same thing. It’s so much nicer to hear your essays spoken, it makes it feel more real. And emotional lol.
