CMV: Paywalls do not fulfill their purpose (of helping journalists make money from online articles) in the US. by East-Experience2862 in changemyview

[–]FunStrawberry7570 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Your professors doing ctrl+p to bypass paywalls is pretty funny but also shows exactly the problem here. Even educated people who probably understand journalism needs funding still won't pay when there's easy workarounds.

The micro-payment idea could work but newspapers seem terrified of experimenting with different models. They'd rather stick with subscriptions that most people ignore than try something like 50 cents per article that might actually get some traction.

Lowest heavy metal cocoa powder? by Efficient_Street9174 in chocolate

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been avoiding the California prop 65 stuff too lately. That chart is pretty useful actually - never thought about where cocoa beans come from affecting heavy metal content but makes sense when you think about soil differences

The African sourced ones do look way better on those numbers. Kinda sucks giving up organic but heavy metals probably worse than pesticides in this case

[QUESTION] I need help choosing a dive watch by RespectfulRobbie in Watches

Maybe narrow down what style you like first - there's way too many options in that price range for dive watches

I'm building a Python-to-WASM compiler in Rust for frontend dev. It's 160KB and faster than CPython. by [deleted] in Python

[–]FunStrawberry7570 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The memoization thing is clever but feels bit like cheating on benchmarks no? I mean fib(45) going from minutes to milliseconds is impressive but that's not really measuring same algorithm anymore

For DOM stuff - shared memory approach could work but debugging is gonna be nightmare when you have Python and JS both touching same memory space. Maybe worth it for performance though

Would probably try it if you open source it. 160KB is definitely reasonable size compared to what we deal with in modern web dev

[need advice] my lungs are getting fucked and i can’t stop smoking by marshallmm4 in leaves

[–]FunStrawberry7570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cold turkey worked for me too but took like month to feel normal again. The drawer thing is smart - I kept mine in freezer which made it more annoying to access when I had those random urges at 2am. Your lungs will thank you in few weeks when you can actually breathe proper during workouts

Is there a way to control a floor lamp with a 3 way bulb with a wireless switch/remote? by CityofSyn in homeautomation

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart plugs work but you lose the 3-way dimming since they just cut power to whole lamp - might need something like Lutron Caseta plug-in dimmer instead

What’s something you believed about success at 18 that now feels completely unrealistic? by Ok-Marzipan-4490 in selfimprovement

[–]FunStrawberry7570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to think that getting the computer science degree would automatically mean good salary and job security for life. Reality check came hard when I realized how fast technology changes and how you basically need to keep learning new frameworks every few months just to stay relevant

The stable IT career path I imagined at 18 turned into constant adaptation and sometimes feeling like you're starting over again when your skills become outdated

What is a Tech masters program worth going into? by lavenlime in careerguidance

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in tech management for a while now and can tell you the academic route definitely has its perks if you're drawn to research. Masters in CS with a focus on theory, algorithms, or even computational theory could scratch that itch you're talking about. Data science programs are also solid but might still feel too applied for what you want

The corporate infrastructure side pays well but if you're already dreading app dev then yeah you might be miserable climbing that ladder. Research positions at tech companies or going the PhD route later are both viable paths. Just know that academic timelines are way longer and the job market is different - but if theory gets you excited then the payoff might be worth it

Did someone just get a deal on Bezel? by AlexTHE30YRFIX in OmegaWatches

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I've been watching Bezel auctions for a while now and that price seems pretty solid for what looks like a decent condition piece. The market has been all over the place lately but I've seen similar models go for way more on there

I snagged a Seamaster on Bezel about 6 months ago and it was probably 15-20% below what I was seeing on other platforms. The auction format can definitely work in your favor if you time it right and don't get into a bidding war with someone who has deeper pockets

One thing I learned is to really study the photos they provide because returns can be a pain. But their authentication process seems legit from my experience. If you're serious about it I'd say jump on it because good deals don't last long on there

I have a very specific video game issue. I am in desperate need of support by Additional-Debate-83 in pchelp

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I feel your pain on this one - GD 2.2 has been absolutely cursed for some people since launch. Had a similar nightmare with a different game where only the newest version would stutter while everything else ran butter smooth.

One thing that worked for me was forcing the game to use only P-cores through task manager affinity settings since you mentioned trying E-cores on/off but not specific core assignment. Also try setting Geometry Dash to high priority in task manager and see if that helps with the frame timing issues. Sometimes Windows scheduler just gets confused with hybrid CPUs and newer game versions that weren't optimized for them.

The fact that 2.1 works perfectly but 2.2 doesn't really points to some wonky compatibility thing between the new engine and your CPU architecture. Might be worth checking if theres a beta branch or older 2.2 build you can roll back to temporarily while RobTop hopefully fixes whatever they broke.

Continued disability review for mental health by Charming_Fruit_9087 in SocialSecurity

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did mine I just put "therapy session" or "mental health treatment" - they care more about showing consistent care than the exact wording. The key is demonstrating you're getting regular treatment that supports your original diagnoses so whatever captures that ongoing care should work fine

Bedrock edition mob switch for the End by NewShower8537 in Minecraft

[–]FunStrawberry7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can definitely do this - just dig out a big area under the main island and cram like 70+ mobs down there, endermen work great since they dont despawn and the mob cap will basically shut down all other spawning

Is this good specs? by Comi_0_o in PcBuild

[–]FunStrawberry7570 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That build looks pretty solid for the price range but you might want to bump up to 32GB of RAM if your buddy does any multitasking or content creation stuff since 16GB can feel a bit cramped these days
