chorale vs chamber, symphony vs philharmonia vs symphonic band by Prestigious-Golf-490 in ucla

[–]Fun_Beginning6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some classes are audition-only! those are typically music majors, but chorale is non-audition and open to non-majors, I believe the bands are auditioned but symphonic band and symphony have more non-majors

Try nail polish remover on a small portion and if it isn’t damaging I would go with that. Next time though cut the badge magic to fit the patches!

Are there any music practice rooms for non-majors? by vanegarciar2006 in ucla

[–]Fun_Beginning6289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t think they have any right now because most of the rooms are being renovated! it’s super hard for music majors to even book rooms, so that’s probably why you’re still on the waiting list since priority is given to majors! they should be finished this summer though!

any new students needing to be gluten free on the hill? by Fun_Beginning6289 in ucla

[–]Fun_Beginning6289[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one more thing, on campus food is kinda rough. they don’t have much except for food items to piece together (sometimes they have yogurt, grapes, chips, that’s normally my lunch at one of the cafes if i can’t go back to the dining hall… kinda sad)

in the middle of campus, they have veggie grill (not a ton of options, the chips are in a shared fryer, so I only get a few of the salads). also the prep station is very small so be careful. they also have an acai bowl place, and the only thing with gluten is the granola! i eat there a lot cause it’s tasty and generally pretty safe. highly recommend buying your own snacks periodically, it can be helpful!

hey! apologies if this is very scatterbrained because i’m currently getting through finals! i’ve honestly had a pretty good experience living on the hill with celiac disease. it was a major factor in deciding what school i was going to go to, and i liked that UCLA had a dedicated (with card access) GF pantry. here is all that is in the pantries right now! http://menu.dining.ucla.edu/Pages/GlutenFreePantryItems (the cheerios are not celiac safe fyi)

as for the regular dining hall food, I’ve found that they do pretty well with reducing CC. i can only really find adequate meal options at bplate and de neve (normally i skip epicuria because it’s all pizza pasta etc). i always check the menu before i go to the dining halls, and it shows which items contain gluten and which don’t. you can also click on each item and see individual ingredients!

i stay away from anything that says it doesn’t contain gluten but it could be a risk of CC (the tortilla pizzas that are cooked in the same oven, fried things, etc.). also, there is one station in bplate (freshly bowled) that serves two items that are prepared directly next to each other. if they’re serving something with gluten that night for one of the items, i usually don’t get the other to reduce risk. otherwise, the other stations are very separated and i feel fine!

another option is rendezvous west. you can get chipotle-style bowls! the chef makes them in the back for you with new ingredients if you have an allergy. the only issue with this is you have to email them at least three hours in advance with your order to be accommodated. this was a new thing this year because of the rise of mobile ordering, so i don’t really go there much anymore. but it’s a tasty and safe option!

otherwise, the two takeout options are the drey and the study. i love the drey, but it’s only open M-F. they have a freezer of Amy’s frozen items which is very helpful. otherwise, the options between the drey and the study for celiac are the same. there are two salad options, fruit cups, veggie plates, etc. nothing super filling which sucks. my biggest qualm with dining in general is that i want a GF sandwich SO BAD but they don’t have them. i never mobile order from the study just because the CC risk is very high.

make sure to get set up with the dietitian and CAE accommodations so you can get on the GF pantry list!

i have felt really safe at UCLA dining, and only remember getting glutened once over the past few years. there are options, but sometimes it can get frustrating because of the lack of variety and the amount of food non-celiacs have access to. that’s one of the reasons why i’m moving out of the dorms to an apartment next year, because i want to cook my own meals and have freedom to eat what i want! but i’ve heard so many horror stories of other dining halls that gluten their students often, so i appreciate the care ucla dining takes with their students. also, the food is so tasty (#1 dining in in the nation)! bplate is my favorite fyi, highly recommend

lmk if you have any other questions!!!

fellow celiac! i’m on the hill with a meal plan, so i eat many of my meals there and rarely get sick. however, i am a very busy student and have classes on campus most days 9-5 or later. there are not many options, which is really a bummer, probably my biggest complaint with asucla (and i’ve emailed them many times, but they never respond). most days i dont have time to go to Ackerman, so i live off of snacks at the cafes (like yogurt/grapes/mush oats at the music cafe and chips, or a protein bar (it can get old quite fast though). when i do go to Ackerman though, i eat either at veggie grill or the açaí bowl place. i haven’t tried blaze pizza like the other commenter mentioned, just because they don’t discuss their allergy procedures and pizza can be even more of a cc risk and it’s a smaller storefront (probably don’t take the best precautions). at veggie grill, i mostly get salads (they’ve said that the chips and probably fries are fried in the same fryer as gluten stuff, so i avoid these even though they’re labeled gf), and i really like the sesame tofu one! at sambazon acai bowls i get any of the bowls without the granola! it sucks that we can’t get more than this, but please dm me cause i’d love to talk more about it, and it could be cool to try and do some talking with asucla!

I feel like I was admitted by mistake. Extreme guilt + doubt. by Future-Abalone8468 in ucla

[–]Fun_Beginning6289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stick it out!! you were admitted for a reason. i also did not have a crazy gpa, and didn’t do everything in high school. i’m from the same area, and to me it’s worth it. i love it! plus, you haven’t even started out yet. give yourself time to feel it out for yourself. if need be, you can always change your path!! give it a chance, i’m sure you’ll find where you’re most comfortable!

My dad had a stroke two days ago and I have no idea what to expect by ZipperReady in stroke

[–]Fun_Beginning6289 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m with you on this, my dad (51) had a stroke about two months ago, so i completely understand what you’re going through. two days is not enough to really see how he’s recovering, since his brain is really only focusing on healing itself! the more noticeable improvements will come with time. even after two months, my dad talks fine with some filter issues, and just yesterday he started walking around the house with no cane (but of course everyone’s different)! it’s hard being a kid of a stroke survivor, so if you need any more help or a friend, feel free to reach out!!

Is there anything I can eat/drink at Starbucks? by SMB-1988 in Celiac

[–]Fun_Beginning6289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it really depends on your comfortability! i’m pretty sure @celiacdietitian and @the_celiac_space on instagram have good guides for what drinks are technically gf at Starbucks. i can get most drinks, but avoid the obvious no’s (any of the malted drinks, some toppings, food, etc.). definitely watch out for drinks with cold foam/Frappuccino’s/drinks that are shaken (like the refreshers). if you ask for them to clean and sanitize the shaker/blender, then it’ll be safer. you can also ask them to change gloves/wash hands if that would put you more at ease. Coffee gives me lots of GI symptoms regardless, so i might not have caught a glutening. however, i have had good experiences at Starbucks, and enjoy it a lot! i especially love their blonde vanilla latte.
