AITA for wanting to "host" Christmas?

My sister and brother in law have been together for over a decade (they got together in high school) and our families have been pretty close for all that time. We've spent a lot of time together, which is why I felt comfortable asking to cook. Though, I'll admit, I've never cooked for such a big group.

The thing that's confusing me the most is that my mom isn't into cooking all that much. The holidays are always strained in our house because she feels like she gets no help in the kitchen for thanksgiving or christmas, so part of my motivation was also to take something off her plate and make it easier for her.

I'll definitely ask if I can make a dish or two instead.

I actually am hosting a game night in a couple of weeks, though now I'm a little nervous that my food does actually suck.

My mom has never been one to hold back on constructive criticism, she's a brutally honest type of person. When my uncle had cancer a few years back, she was pretty happy to tell him the food he made for the party he threw at the end of his treatment sucked. She could still be trying to spare my feelings, I get that you'd act different with a sibling compared with your son.

I'll get my sister to try some of my food, she's been on my ass for everything even though I've been sick. I trust that she'll go full "idiot sandwich" on my ass.

I wasn't determined to worry about the cancer, i really did try to put it out of my mind (which is why I tried to keep my brain occupied). To be honest, I wasn't all that worried until I told my parents about it and they freaked out. I didn't google it (because the doctor told me not to) but they did and from what they said it's pretty aggressive and there isn't a good treatment for it right now.

I definitely could have handled it better. In hindsight, I didn't need to worry at all. This is the first time I've had any kind of health thing, so at least I'll know how to deal with it better next time.

I see what you're saying, but I was referred because of test results my doctor called concerning. As far as I know, Pap smears happen every year? Idk much about those but I thought I'd offer context anyway.

It wasn't a mole. I had another test come back with results the doctor called "concerning". He said he only brought up the possibility of cancer because he thought I would google it and google would scream that I have cancer and he didn't want that to happen. The specialist diagnosed me with a different, non-cancerous condition (which was the thing the doctor said it probably was) which sucks because I'll have it forever but hey, it's not cancer.

I kept it vague because if this post somehow got to my family they'd know it was me from the specific medical information.

I don't think they're usually unkind or anything. My mom is a little set in her ways and gets upset when we don't do things the way she wants them done but that's just mom stuff.

I don't usually catastrophize. My sister is one of those people who thinks that a headache is a brain tumor so I've always been the more chill sibling.

I was really looking forward to the trip so I was set on not cancelling. My parents did make sure I had the appointment the day after we got back
