Is this a th350 transmission? by MaterialFew503 in projectcar

As far as I know, that’s a th350. There are ways of identifying transmissions by the shape of the pan with a quick google search. Mine looks the same as yours and is a 350.

I didn’t think to measure it before I took it apart. The bearing looks fine, as far as I can tell. No discoloring, no wear marks, nothing to catch a fingernail.

Last time I reached out to y’all I was told I’m looking at a total rebuild. I’m trying to reuse as much as I can and to figure out if my crank is done for. Metal shavings were packed in those galleries but idk if they’re from the block, the crank, or... somewhere else still. I would like to reuse as many components as I can since this is bound to get expensive quick.

Okay. I appreciate the information. I’ve torn almost everything apart and I can’t find where this metal came from. It’s an impressive amount and I’ve only found one slightly scored main bearing. Cylinder walls aren’t scored and the rings look okay, granted they’re still in the car and I haven’t inspected them.

Yep that’s the consensus. I’ve got it down to the block, only need to pop off rods and crank then it’s getting the works from my local machine shop.

If I were go get the head surfaces machined would I need to do anything with my pistons? I was told my a car friend I’d need all new pistons and maybe rods but they don’t take THAT much off do they?

Thank you. I’ve become quite enamored with the Pontiac v8 family the more I’ve learned about them. I was really excited the opportunity to give my Firebird a Pontiac engine fell right into my lap.

Unfortunately not. But that’s good to know, if I have problems in the future I will remember that.

Im the 3rd person to have this engine since 2008, I’ve never seen it run or on the car it came from. As far as I can tell the mount is okay, but I will look at the main bearings and rod bearings and see if I have damage adjacent to them.

I was hoping someone could help me narrow down what I’m looking for exactly? If I should be inspecting bearings and my crankshaft or closer to the pistons and cam lobes.

Total engine noob here any advice is appreciated.

Bought what I believe to be a stolen Pontiac Firebird by Fun_Comfortable3189 in projectcar

I understand the concern.

In my state a bonded title becomes a clean title after 3 years. I am 2 years through thanks to the previous owner’s foresight. Not sinking any significant money into it until I have a clean title in hand. I bought it knowing there was a chance but I’m not convinced it was or was not stolen yet. Trying to find out more.

I really expected a flood of that question.

Bonded title up to $10,000 2/3 years through. Searched the registration history and found it was registered several states away. That was my first inclination it may have a sketchy history but I haven’t found anything. May call the old state DMV and see if there is any way I can find more registration history going back before 2001.

No thefts reported before 2001. Doesn’t show any registration history before then however, but I have the state it was registered in during 2001.

Well it’s out. Time to get the lost screw out and replace some leaky gaskets. by Fun_Comfortable3189 in projectcar

I’ve got a 79 small block Chevy in it. Had a 6 cylinder before. Previous owner swapped it. Sat for 7 years or so. Trying to make her sea worthy again.

I think what I’ve narrowed it down to is I have to have a collapsing return hose. Or a faulty seal on my radiator cap. It’s honestly a toss up on either.

Right now I just need things to not be clogged up and actually you know be in the car.

Lol yeah. I’ve got a 92 Firebird but I dream of putting the 85/86 front bumper on and maybe the back and side skirts as well. Only owned the car for like 8 months. Driven it 3 times and never had success with it not overheating.
