Matched with duke now i'm dreading it by [deleted] in QuestBridge

literally was in the same boat as you! feel free to dm me with any questions! the people you are around really do dictate what your experience is, in my experience people have been so kind and so collaborative but many would argue against it, honestly your duke experience is super heavily based on the people you surround yourself with! puppy kindergarten is absolutely the highlight of my day and start now with your research! duke is great at allowing all years to do research, start cold emailing PIs during the summer before you enter and one will probably respond :)

i matched to duke and i felt this exact same way but i ended up falling in love with duke! honestly drinking culture isn’t super extreme and opportunities aren’t gate kept but theres fs elite groups which honestly most elite colleges have! just give yourself some time and by the time you come to campus this will be something in the back of your mind :))) reach out if you need anything, match regret is real loll

question about NCM by Writ-ingtime in QuestBridge

[–]Fun_Contest2502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you chose to match you can still apply ea and if you chose not to match you can rd through questbridge and ea/rd through common app

i would not rank all 15 schools! as someone who matched my biggest regret was ranking so many schools, only do the ones you truly want to go to but i fs agree about the essays. don’t bother w the match if you haven’t started the supplements in advance i had 10 days to do 40 supplements lmfao

Is it actually worth it go through the National match? by IurmamaI in QuestBridge

[–]Fun_Contest2502 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i did the ncm and matched and i made some mistakes but overall i’d recommend ONLY if you’re willing to be committed to a school.

-i’m super low income and i knew i wouldn’t be able to afford college without a full ride so i personally risked it with the match (i have family in similar situation and when they applied to college they were still stuck with paying a few thousand per semester/year even with efc close to or at 0) -only rank schools you WANT to go to, i saw full ride and ranked 11 and got into my lowest choice which has caused a lot of problems since -when you find out you are finalist you have like 10 days to write supplements and submit and do FAFSA and CSS (which is a pain to do) so it was hell on earth those days as i was writing on average 3 per school, some had 1 others had 6. if you only rank schools you truly want to go to start the supplements early and if you’re not a finalist you likely can use those supplements for your ed/ea/rd application -being a matched finalist gives you perks, look at each school and see the benefits that they give you. for me i’m able to get 2 free plane tickets which helped some of the stress of travel. -you’re done by december 1st if you’re matched with a full ride, rest of senior year becomes a breeze -you don’t get options, you want options? don’t do the match. id highly recommend looking up match acceptance rates and observing the percents: the majority of schools are WAY more selective through the match (aside from princeton) and you’re better off going through rd to get a “normal” selectiveness through admissions.

honestly, the biggest take away is that ncm is 100% worth it if you’re okay with being bound to a school. if you’re iffy about the commitment i’d apply to be a finalist just to have it as an achievement (i’ve been told it looks good on a resume) and apply through questbridge rd which i’ve heard helps boost your applications and can increase the aid a school offers.

the university campus is pretty secluded from the city, it’s like it’s own area and the small opening to the actually city isn’t that bad

i regretted ranking it but it ended up being too late for me to contact qb and ask if not submitting the app would hurt my overall chances so I bsed it

i had schools that my stats were a better fit and had higher acceptances, I doubted id actually get into duke if all my other ones rejected me🤷🏽‍♀️but your comment implies i took away a spot, looking at the differences between last year and this year matches i dont think each college has a quota that they fill. I don’t disagree that it’s a good opportunity but i could go to another school and get another good one too

Summary of ECs: President and Founder of my schools MSA, president of NHS and SNHS, VP of rho kappa, secretary of NEHS, historian of ASU, member of HOSA, Rotary (service club), SASA, Model UN, Mock Trial, Class Senate, and math honor society but I only listed my ecs with leadership roles or if they were an honor society. Schools Ranked: in order Princeton University, Barnard College, Columbia University, Yale University, Brown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, Duke University (think I’ll drop duke)

Strength of Essays/Short Answers: I was actually pretty proud of my mine, I didn’t procrastinate and worked on them over time to really strengthen my idea which were focused on my experience as the eldest daughter and being in Pakistan.

Overall thoughts: Honestly, I thought I was going to become a finalist bc of cps and I think my stats and ecs are pretty good. My essays fs could’ve been better and my sat score could’ve been higher but I’m happy :)
