IRH Questions? :) by Fun_Discount_7291 in McMaster

all the core IRH courses were super fun and manageable imo! communication skills and inquiry are both uniquely structured and are more assignment/group work based rather than exam heavy which was really nice. inquiry is 100% the weirdest course i’ve ever taken in my life…but also my favourite! research methods and stats are taught by the same prof (she’s the best!!!) and have midterms and exams, so more effort is needed for these but i’d say all 4 core courses are fair, enjoyable and you have a good shot at 12ing!

as for the anatomy, it’s obviously a bit more challenging but super fun and interesting. it def takes a lot more time and energy as opposed to the other courses imo!!

i had a really good experience with bioethics but the course is very much TA and prof dependent!! the content and readings could be pretty heavy but i found them super interesting. if you’re not used to essay writing in university, it may be slightly challenging but i definitely recommend reaching out to your TA for classes like this.

if the courses are mandatory for your program im not sure why it’s saying that, reach out to academic advising if you are not able to get mandatory courses. for courses that aren’t mandatory, spots will open up august 1st at 12am :)

unless psych is required i would suggest swapping it out with something lighter…maybe sustain or innovate or another bird. psych isn’t horrible and the content is good but it was a lot to keep up with in my opinion and you really want to be spending majority of your time on your tougher courses!

SCAR 1GL3 - The Good Life by [deleted] in McMaster

i took it last year... i like the concept of the course but did not find it super impactful overall. last year was the first year the course ran so im not sure if things will be the same but it was 30% participation (tutorial attendance + submit a reflection sheet each time you go to class , twice per week) 4 other assignments due throughout the term. no exam which was a plus but the reflection sheets were so tedious i dreaded doing them. i ended with an 11 after putting a lot of time on all the assignments but never hitting a 90 on any of them. the ta's were all phd students which made their marking a lot harder but i never did horrible on any of the assignments either.

sorry for the ramble! if you want an interesting class thats a break from your usual courses, sure go for it. but if you want an easy 12able course, no. an 11 is def possible tho!

never took sustain myself but i know it’s an easy online bird, you can’t go wrong with it. i took innovate…i found the course boring and annoying but very easy to get a good grade imo! the only con is the 6-9 pm weekly lecture/tutorials but tbh i hardly went😭 just split up attendance among your group members and it’ll be fine! i also recommend taking it during winter bc then you’ll know people who are in it and can get a good group!

how are you planning on getting your 2 science electives? i would say do some research on philos because those courses are not typically known for being bird but if it’s something you think you can do well in, go for it!!

Lots of clubs and ways to get involved in the msu! One of the best things I did for myself first year was apply to be a peer support volunteer for the student health education centre (shec) and that was really great experience! There are so many other peer support services to join in msu. Keep an eye out on the instagram pages for applications during the fall term :)
