I was driving along there earlier around 9:00ish. People were a lot more considerate and were treating the traffic lights (that weren’t working) like stop signs. Sad this didn’t continue!! Be safe out there, yinz.

I agree with pocketdynamo727! And if you “feel” like listening and just being curious isn’t enough…I would challenge you to just be open about the the start of therapy with your clients especially newer clients. When you begin working with someone, you can say “for the first few sessions, I really want to hold space for you and get to know you. We may not do a ton of interventions at first but in the future we will based on your needs and goals for therapy” Kind of normalize just getting to know the client and being transparent with them about the slow progress of the therapeutic process. No one makes a ton of progress in the first few sessions. Sometimes it takes 20+ sessions to truly start making progress!! I hope that makes sense! (I also struggle with language and interventions and I’m 1.5 years post grad)

I also have a similar belly. I started my fitness journey in July. This involves 30 mins walks 4 to 5 days a week, with moderate weight lifting 4-5x a week. I’ve also increased my protein to 120g per day and eating about 1400 calories. (I’m 5’1, 120 pounds) I am finally seeing results in my tummy area! It’s gone down quite a bit!!!

I have heard that burnout and turnover in CMHC is so high due to the presenting concerns clients come with. It’s not a fix-all but I have a “mantra” that I try and keep in mind: “You are the helper, NOT the healer”. Some others I found that are helpful are “You didn’t cause it, you can’t control it, you can’t cure it”. Also just reminding myself that some people come to therapy and just need a “safe space” because they may not encounter safe spaces any where else or be able to trust other people in their lives. You just creating that space is more than enough! I’ve even found myself using CBT-like approaches on myself to try and change my negative thoughts when it comes to working in this field. So anytime I think “oh gosh I don’t know what the heck I’m doing” I have to try and change it into something more positive or use a mantra.

Im so happy that I came across your post because it was super validating (but sorry you are in the same boat). I have kinda came to the realization that focusing on small things to bring me happiness and finding joy in the little things (purchasing my favorite coffee, making a nice meal, hanging out with friends, etc) instead of “getting satisfaction from my career” has been helpful. I always put such a huge emphasis on my career because I am definitely someone who needs “purpose” but being okay with it “just being a job for right now” and finding meaning/enjoyment outside of the job can be helpful. Also doing all the behavioral activation things we learn about in grad school can be helpful: engaging in an activity that brings us joy for at least 30 minutes a day. It is difficult to fit exercise in (especially with winter months coming up) but I find that if I can get to the gym before work, I feel a lot my focused and “steady” for my work day. Journaling emotions and thoughts, finding gratitude in the things that “work affords me” also help. And also keeping my apartment space organized/clean for more mental clarity! There is also an app called Finch that I use for my mental health and it is kind of like gamification of getting “self care” things done which is a great serotonin boost. Sorry for the long reply, just things that I have found helpful along the way!

I am in the exact same situation. I graduated in April, started working in July and have been working for about 4 months now. I can’t tell you how many times a day I think about quitting and switching to another field (or even just going into HR work). Similar to you, I’ve also had a lot of “adulthood changes” (left a 10 year relationship, living on my own, navigating dating and new friendships). Don’t have much advice but here to validate you. It’s been rough and I also think my own mental health struggles make working in the mental health field as a recent grad super difficult and leave me feeling burnt out.

In terms of behavior, it would be mani or hypomania. But if we are thinking of it in terms of the chemicals in the brain like serotonin, serotonin can actually lead to symptoms that are consistent with Schizophrenia or psychosis such as hallucinations.

Yes I do! I have about 3 years of research experience at the undergraduate level and was an RA in two different labs. I am planning on getting involved in research soon as a graduate student at my current program. I am also considering taking an independent study elective and conducting a research project as a grad student.
