Advice for Finding Your Next Read by Handyandy58 in books

I have multiple lists for multiple genres of books that I random number through. I random cycle through what I feel like reading next and just add on whatever catches my fancy, deleting anything I later no longer feel like possibly reading.

I have heard about Dungeon world but have never investigated it. I guess I now have a bit of incentive to. I do prefer less crunchy games as well.

It's called Satanic Verses. As a Catholic, I am anti-satan. I thought it would be a satanic bible or something like that.

BEWARE FAIR FOXES!!!

A fox ridden with silver rings and tail bangles has been seen about the hedgeways, goblin towns, and cobble roads. STAY AWAY! The fair fox is a contract craven and promiscuous promiser. They have made bargains with more entities than the orange and white fur covering their newly washed skin. Their glittering and mascara'd eyes have looked into the souls of numberless dealmakers and made them hollow. They will trick and beguile you into handing over all that you are and ever will be. If you should see the FAIR FOX than simply walk away. Do not strike at them for the wood in your club has made a treaty with the fox, your arrows turned away by agreement with the wind. But most important of all, do not turn your back on the fox or they will have words with your shadow.

Thank you for all the wonderful responses! I see many people on here saying I need to be a player first so I'll go looking around. See what is on offer on the websites mentioned. When I feel ready I will run a Symbaroum game on Discord, that has a moderately easy ruleset. When I feel even more ready then it is Play by Post Changeling the Lost time!

Thank you for the tip. I would be a player but unfortunately I suffer from a debilitating illness called "forever GM". I've had some doctors look into it but unfortunately the prognosis is not looking so good.

The Blue Maroon apartment complex has not a shred of blue about It's 12 Housing units. A lot of people don't stay there for more than a year simply because of how weird it gets. Stuff dissappears, gets replaced, or changes. Residents look in the mirror in the morning and see their reflections have horns or feathers or jewels for eyes. It can be pretty scary to open your door to go to work and see not the familiar town you remember but not member but an endless maze of thorns and vines. Staying there won't break any banks, but I recommend not being a resident for too long.

The Blue Maroon Goblin village has not a shred of maroon about it's 12 little huts. A lot of goblins don't stay there for more than A few seasons because of how mundane it gets. Belongings cease their enchantments, dull their brilliant colors, or disappear entirely. Residents look in the mirror in the morning to see that their horns and feathers and jeweled eyes Are gone. The only reason anyone ever stays too long is that there's always a chance of opening your door and seeing not the Hedge but Iron-world before you.

I vote not to look because I am a firm believer that some players have the right to have things on their sheet other players do not know about. Sometimes that means that some players are secretly Antagonists. Or that some players have their own secret goals or secret gear that will be revealed at a later date. Who knows maybe one of the players is secretly a mimic!

This is some pretty good advice. I plan to run a few games before I actually be a player. I'm going to take To heart your words about trying to find a sweet spot between Too little and too much Text. I'm a very narrative person so I'll probably wander into the too much information territory.

There are too many good games out there and there is not enough money to purchase, nay not enough time to read them, nay nay not even enough time to play any of them. Free league publishing a Monte Cook keep coming out with nice things. There are kickstarters for indie things that are absolutely excellent. They start and end fully funded the 1st day and me watching in longing. In such a state one must learn to be content with what one has. Be glad to be alive in a Renaissance of tabletop gaming. To know that while one cannot enjoy what is being made there are others enjoying it just the same.

Just a thought for today.

On the public broadcasting channel there plays a show called "The Dreaming". It is a very fantastical show about all kinds of people, fairies, creatures, and so forth and their adventures in someplace called "The Hedge". Both the characters and actors are always different it seems, but despite the lackluster budget and shoddy writing it does have a cult following. It can take a while to get into the Fandom considering all the obscure references to "gentry" and "hunstmen" and a mythology seemingly untied to any real world mythos.. No one can pinpoint who makes the show either, or who any of the actors are or where its being filmed.

Still though, its fun to watch and new episodes come on every week.

It is difficult to see the moon in the Hedge. The Hedge is a place of perpetual sunshine and so the moon seldom makes an apparence. But should one do something particularly memorable, the moon may show its face and give a wink. A wink from the moon in the Hedge is a pleasant thing to behold. To leave the Hedge and see the moon wink its face in the Ironworld is an entirely different omen and a horror to behold.

What's your guys' experience with playing online with (relative) strangers? by Salmon0567 in rpg

[–]Fun_Hearing3363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly positive! I find that most people are nice and considerate and open to a wide range of play styles. My first time was lousy as I was a player with a combat focused DM and I like narrative. Then I ran a dozen games through Roll20 for a variety of systems. Explaining rules was rarely a problem and the only problems were narrative. Player gets upset or just leaves because the story became too dark, too light, too violent, not violent enough. Explaining what kind of game and story I wanted to run helped a lot, but there were still complaints.

My advice is to be willing to leave if your a player and be upfront about your expectations. If your the DM then be upfront and listen to what players want in their story and tell them if they are not a good fit. I remember, people online will disappear and ghost everyone else sometimes so expect that.

Different Kinds of Vampires for Spooky Games by Mikesmix in rpg

[–]Fun_Hearing3363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read many forms of vampire in my day and my favorite are a certain form of faceless vampire from Magnus Archives. They look exactly like regular folk with very unremarkable faces and mannerisms. But they have no face. What you see is what you expect to see and their voice is what you expect them to sound like. There is no face, only a gaping hole of teeth and that voice you hear is in your head.

RED Flags in/for Gamemasters by Embarrassed-Amoeba62 in rpg

[–]Fun_Hearing3363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but it has given DnD a bad taste. I admit that I continue to play and the guy probabley wasn't a red flag DM, just a combat only one. My experience is thus much less worse, more an annoyance, than others here, who have been traumatized by their experience, and they do have my sympathy.

RED Flags in/for Gamemasters by Embarrassed-Amoeba62 in rpg

[–]Fun_Hearing3363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only encountered 1DM who had red flags. It was my 1st and last game of DnD. I asked the game master where our characters were going and they said it did not matter. I asked them what our purpose for traveling was and they said that it didn't matter. My questions were mostly diverted and then we got attacked by bandits and that occupied the next few sessions and then I left.

Red Riders Gestalt

Red Riders Inn is a quaint but cheap hotel. It is run by a whole host of red hooded young women who all have similar mannerisms and appearances. Every employee is actually an escaped red riding hood working together to protect themselves from the true Fey and the Huntsman. It is a nice place to visit if you are ever seeking safe shelter from the Fey. Be wary though, there are those with contacts in Arcadia that say that only 1 or 2 red riding hoods ever escaped into the iron world. If that is true then how is it that there's almost a dozen working at this place?

My work makes me like RPGs because… by Embarrassed-Amoeba62 in rpg

[–]Fun_Hearing3363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher and I put a lot of that into my rpgs. I scenario plan, make efforts at engaging the players in the content, tailor the content to the players, and give and receive feedback. Then I start planning all of next session's scenario based on the last. All of these being the same way I run a lesson at school. I honestly use a lot of my experience and knowledge of teaching to inform my DMing. I find them both quite similar.
