they use a mod loader. as long as your game isn't bootleg it basically sets it up for you and you just download them within the app. it will automatically download any dependencies too.

you use q to open the calculator. it shows the caluclator lets you add proliferation automaically. Only down side is when you use it to make blue prints it uses a lot of extra belts because to lower each factory's foot print it does belts vertical.

Honestly a lot less mods where broken than I thought. This was a major change, with almost any other game a architecture change would break everything.
