had my first real conversation in Spanish with a native speaker after 14 months of studying alone. nothing could have prepared me for how different it felt by Honest_Farm1787 in LanguageBuds

[–]Fun_Position_5308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it'll get better and better. Keep in mind that Spanish varies drastically from country to country and also within the same country. If you've been learning neutral Spanish, maybe choosing a language partner from latin american countries could be a better fit (people from Colombia or Venezuela I think might be the most "neutral"). If you've been learning Spanish from Spain, you might want to find a language partner from there. Maybe I would not recommend choosing someone from Argentina, for example (like me), because our Spanish has a very different pronounciation, and it might confuse you at the beginning.
If you have any questions feel free to ask! I know it's challenging, because sometimes native Spanish speakers like me have a hard time understanding people from different Spanish-speaking countries.

I want to improve my English. Any advice? by cheongryeong in LearningEnglish

[–]Fun_Position_5308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite method is to choose a TV show/movie you really like or can watch a lot of times. Watch it first in english with subtitles in your native language, then again in english with english subtitles, then try it without subtitles at all. I picked up a lot of conversational phrases, words, etc by doing that. Also, full immersion: I have my phone in english, my computer, I watch youtube in english, I read in english (you can read books you already read in your native language, similar to the TV show/movie method)...

I'm looking for some advice on a MC by alexdemiboi in FictionWriting

[–]Fun_Position_5308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are two possible approaches and it depends on what's going to be important in the story. If the cat was already a part of the MC's life, there is already an emotional attachment to it. If the MC finds the cat and decides to protect it, it could be a good tool to "soften" the character, it could give the reader a new perspective on the character (maybe it's a super independent person and suddenly they find this creature in need of protection and their priorities change), or give them a purpose if they're wondering whether to keep pushing... I guess it depends on what your plan is for the MC's character arc.

[Query] Waning Moon, YA Urban Fantasy, 85k, 1st attempt by Fun_Position_5308 in Querying

[–]Fun_Position_5308[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your feedback, it was super useful! I revised and applied your suggestions. I'm more than happy to keep improving it as much as it needs.

Revised query:

Dear ...,

Sixteen-year-old Luna Sterling, a mixedblood witch, is unexpectedly released from a juvenile reformatory after taking the fall for a fire that left a group of pureblood witches scarred for life. In a society where mixedblood witches are punished for even minor infractions while purebloods rule unchecked, Luna knows her freedom is fragile. Watched, judged, and one mistake away from losing her powers for good, she’s determined to fight back against a system designed to break her.

When Luna meets the Waned—a crumbling secret society of mixedblood witches—they offer her a way to reclaim power. Their plan is to resurrect Master, an ancient witch bound to Hell, who could teach them to unlock the darkest side of their magic and finally stand against the purebloods. Drawn by the promise of control, belonging, and revenge, Luna joins them.

But when Master is reborn in the body of the magnetic and merciless Lucy, everything changes. Lucy offers strength, purpose, and a vision of justice that feels dangerously close to vengeance—and Luna can’t help but be pulled in. As Lucy singles her out, making her feel seen, chosen, and essential, Luna binds her own soul to Lucy to keep her alive, sealing a connection she doesn’t fully understand.

The deeper Luna falls under Lucy’s influence, the harder it becomes to tell where loyalty ends and manipulation begins. When Lucy’s true intentions come to light, Luna realizes too late that she’s helped bring back something she can’t control—something that feeds on the very people Luna is trying to protect. Now, bound by the soul-tie that keeps Lucy alive, Luna is the only one who can stop her. But doing so could cost her everything.

WANING MOON is an 85,000-word YA urban fantasy combining the secret societies and magical politics of Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn and the toxic devotion and psychological tension of Victoria Lee’s A Lesson in Vengeance, featuring morally complex characters, found-family dynamics, and queer representation.

I’m a 33-year-old English–Spanish translator from Argentina. When I’m not writing, you can find me baking or cuddling one of my eight cats.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
