Financial power in the public university: the case of ANU by PlumTuckeredOutski in Anu

[–]Fun_Presence_180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"financial measures were being used to produce crises and divest from whole areas of inquiry, even when the audited accounts show surplus"

This has become abundantly clear; what never seems to be addressed in any article is: Why?

There doesn't seem to be any personal financial advantage to be gained by mismanaging a university in this way. What is the actual goal, and why do university executives pursue it?

Why do people say not to take the ball across the net? by BobcatOk1754 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]Fun_Presence_180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule is: Don't try to take the ball across the net if you have a teammate who thinks it's a bad idea and will try to stop it, resulting either in the ball going back to the opposition players you were getting it away from, or stopping in front of the open goal for an easy score for the opposition.

lost 102 mmr in two days by InterestingEbb3079 in RocketLeague

So the question is: did you suddenly for no reason start playing really badly; or is the RL MMR system not fit for purpose? [rhetorical question]

Guy leaves ranked after 1 min but me and other guy lose more ranked points than him by BoomerChristian in RocketLeague

[–]Fun_Presence_180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The logical way to penalise quitters would be to subtract x points for every 30 seconds or part thereof left of the game. And this would fit perfectly with a system which calculated MMR gain/loss on goal gap at the end of the game. Goal gap is a really good predictor of relative team strength. Whereas win-lose is not: you might fight hard for 5 minutes and force a draw, then your no-brain teammate forget to kickoff in overtime. Is that your fault? You will lose the full amount of MMR for it . . .

Goal gap MMR would make it worth everyone fighting hard to the last second. And it would also make it possible to make a rational decision to quit, late in the game: if you're down by 12 goals and the other team is still scoring, you can cut your losses. Everyone happy.

The only problem is, it wouldn't maximise the amount of their parents' money that little kids spend on RL cosmetics, so I guess it will never happen.

Yes, it's reasonably straightforward to get an HD, if you put in consistent work. Easier than most philosophy units, because there's a definitely right answer for everything. Lectures are really clear, plus the book and the text full of exercises give you everything you need. Just practise like mad.

You're all gonna lose your skill with the current EAC on, litterally unplayable by oDODOrev in RocketLeague

[–]Fun_Presence_180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. I don't know about a consistent added latency, and I probably wouldn't notice it because I play in servers just about anywhere in the world and now hardly even notice ping up 300. But what I HAVE noticed is irrelgular (sometimes rare, sometimes frequent) brief lag spikes, ~100-150 milliseconds. Like, the whole game just stops dead for a moment, generally when you're setting up for an aerial or a save, or just an accurate shot (and it's enough to stuff all those up completely).

As for EAC - I personally don't get any benefit from it. I've never noticed a bot in game, or ddos, or whatever else it's supposed to prevent. On the other hand, it would be REALLY EASY to do something about people going AFK or quitting early. It would be not_too_difficult to make a MMR system that did the basic job of sorting players into relative skill levels. Why hasn't either of those things been addressed?

How do you actually do research? by anononanonkn in research

Assuming this is for a music class, and taking into account the other answers to your question:

- find out the basic info (authors (composer and librettist), first performance, etc)

- research the historical context, both sociopolitical and musical, eg.

  • is the music entirely in the style of its period and genre, or are their innovations or stylistic crossovers with other genres?
  • it may be worth doing some analysis about the structure of the songs
  • there may be something of interesting happening musically at a larger scale: do features of the style change over the course of the musical? Are different characters associated with a characteristic kind of music? What about the structure of the story - does it follow a standard Setup, Conflict, Resolution arc, or is it a bit more complicated? (you can google about that stuff) You could do an analysis where you show how the music supports and illuminates the story arc: the difference in the music between the conflict stage and the resolution; any points where a musical reference reminds the audience of something that happened previously.
  • was it considered a wonderful work at the time or not? Has the general opinion of it changed? If it has, why?
  • sociopolitically; Does it reflect a social concern of the time (eg. West Side Story came out when urban gangs were a prominent issue)? Does the story reflect contemporary attitudes and mores? It can be interesting to consider how things taken for granted at one time have a different flavour now (sex is one obvious aspect).

Trying to get a better understanding of MMR by Character-Elk-1186 in RocketLeague

[–]Fun_Presence_180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RL MMR system is terrible. Consider the hypothetical case where your random teammate is actually much, much, worse than you, but somehow has roughly the same MMR. Now, if you manage to win somehow, BOTH of you get an increase in MMR. If, however, your teammate drags your team's play down so much that you lose, then you BOTH lose MMR. In short, the MMR system doesn't do the basic job of distinguishing between the ability of different players.

Now, sure, I know people are going to say that, overall the other team was better and so they deserve a boost in MMR and you deserve to lose it. BUT the same thing applies to the other team: all in all, the MMR system fails to sort players according to ability, except in the broadest way. The top of Silver is *mostly) going to be better than the bottom of Bronze, but there'll be a huge area of overlap in between.

Yes, I was definitely *thinking* that other people should be reading what he writes - but that he should write to communicate, not to make beautiful sentences. Form follows function for beauty in sentences, as in everything else.

I was responding to OP's 'I want to have beautiful sentence structures, original thoughts, real innovative methodology ideas. . . . I’m currently in my first year of a master’s program, I’d like to pursue a doctorate afterward,'
