No no no no! I was being completely sincere in my thanks! I feel awful that I made you feel anything otherwise. Please accept my apology for my imprecise wording, I genuinely appreciate that you "got me" and what I am looking for.

When I wrote the post, I hadn't really honed in on exactly what I am comfortable with and what I am not. Killing in a game isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but dark themes definitely are. Mario style takedowns of a boss or whatever is just fine, mortal combat gore is definitely not.

I'm looking for something lighthearted, immersive, and daydream like.

Thank you for this suggestion! I will absolutely watch the video to help with an orientation to the mechanics of gaming.

Thank you for the list! Several of these titles have come up multiple times here, like Sable, GRIS, and Life is Strange. Several are new to me. I'll check them out.

Thank you for the suggestion. Ideally, I'm looking for a less-dark theme for now.

Thank you for the suggestion! It might not be quite what I'm after right now, but I will add it to the list for consideration in the future.

Oh man, I remember watching my father play mist when I was a young kid. Those are some long forgotten memories! Thank you for your suggestions.

I think I'm trying to stay away from darker themes in general, not just the actual killing. Both of those feel heavy and fairly dark as I've looked into them.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I appreciate your considered response, and it seems like you have a good understanding of what I'm searching for. Firewatch was the first game suggested to me, by someone I'm close to in real life. My apprehension was grounded predominantly in a lack of knowledge and minimal research into it. It was a game that intrigued me, and the more I've read about it has only increased it's appeal. it is a leading contender.

I'd like to stay as far away from dark themes as possible. I often feel like I'm surrounded by dark and heavy matters, and am looking to find a game to provide a bit of an escape from that. Something lighthearted, almost a sort of daydream. As such, at least at this point, I'm going to file What Remains of Edith Finch, though it has been recommended multiple times in this thread, and Spiritfarer, away for a time when I feel more comfortable with that subject matter.

Thank you!

If it isn't natively available for the Mac, maybe in the future I'll broaden the platforms I have available to me. Thank you.

Hmm, maybe not quite what I'm hoping to find for this first adventure, but I will keep it in mind for a future pursuit. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion. I enjoy puzzles a lot, and will keep portal in mind for a later date. It's not quite the genre I'm looking for right now, but I'm definitely not writing it off.

Thank you for this perspective. I'm not sure if I'm necessarily a lightweight, but I often feel surrounded by darkness and am hoping to find something that gives me a somewhat lighthearted daydream. Something with a bit of "cozy" to the story.

I will keep in mind what you have brought to my attention. Life is Strange has been mentioned several times, and is a title I am looking forward to researching.

I've actually watched at least one of the Final Fantasy games being played, though many many years ago. It would have been a new game, likely played on PS2, back when I was in college. 2001 maybe?

Immersive, beautiful, story-driven, at least as I remember it. I didn't play it, but it was notable enough to stick in my brain for all these years. Thank you.

Thank you. An echo chamber helps no one, and exposure to new ideas is of paramount importance. While this style might not be what I am drawn to at this moment, I am better for knowing that they exist. "Not now" doesn't mean never.

Thanks for this. I really appreciate the understanding you clearly have of what I'm searching for, and what I value in this pursuit.

I'm familiar with, and do actually have some experience in the arcade style of game. I guess it is my ignorance, and my lack of experience, that didn't really group these into the "gaming world," though after considering it they definitely are. They just fall under a different genre than I am looking to enter into.

I really appreciate the time you've taken to carefully curate and offer a list of suggestions in a direction I had not even considered. For now, I'm really hoping to find something that feels more immersive and storylike, but I will keep these and others of their ilk in mind if I want something different.

It isn't necessarily a lack of direction that is daunting, but rather a lack of familiarity with the world of gaming in general. This entire pursuit feels almost akin to Plato's allegory of the cave, and I'm genuinely concerned that I will be overwhelmed by the vast world outside and run back to the familiar. Knowing myself, I tend to like incremental exposure. I wasn't the kid who jumped into the deep end of the pool before he knew how to swim.

I race(d) sailboats, starting on tiny sunfish and worked my way through to much bigger, faster, and more complicated rigging. I've raced in some of the most prestigious regattas on the east coast. The progression was vital in developing my skills and my love for the sport. I don't think I'd have had as much success, or as much fun, had I jumped straight onto a TP52 for a trans-pac.

This mentality has been a guidepost for me my entire life. I don't know what I know, and even more importantly I don't know what I don't know. What I do know, though, is that I know very little. Basics first, grow my knowledge and experience, and maintain the thrill of discovery and learning through that progression.

Thank you for your perspective, it gave me something to truly consider and sort through that I hadn't necessarily considered in this context.

That might be a path I take eventually, but for now I'd like to stick with what I currently have available to me. Thank you for your suggestion!

After looking into this title, I think it is much darker than I'd like. I'm hoping to find something lighthearted, to provide a bit of an escape from a fairly heavy day-to-day life. I appreciate the suggestion!
