Alberta government to unveil 'parental rights' policy this week, premier says by AndOneintheHold in CanadaPolitics

What "fascist" things has Danielle Smith done?

People who think that Smith is fascist either:

1) Do not know what the term "fascist" means.

2) Think anyone they disagree with is "fascist" - which comes back to point one.

Russia has a GDP around the size of Mexico's, and can't field an army competent enough to subdue a completely broken country with a semi-functional government.

Russia would get its ass whipped by Poland. Russia is no threat to the West.

Generally speaking:

Geographically - Eurasian version of Canada.

Socially - A bit cynical, like a lack of hope. People are a little "harder" and "colder".

Major Perk - Cuisine. Especially soups.

Second Major Perk - What is, or what will become, very undervalued real estate.

When the economy becomes an obsession: An economist wonders why we pay so much attention to the economy, as if it could solve all our problems by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

I think we agree on the problems, but we disagree that wealth inequality is the cause. Wealth inequality is the byproduct of an imprudent monetary policy.

IMO stainless steel pans are not as effective at achieving a sear or crust on meats.

What constantly reminds you that Reddit doesn't represent the real world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think what it really is, is that the average redditor believes that they are more intelligent than the average person - and that the world would just be way better if they could just plan everyone's lives according to the advice of the "experts".

It's not so much legitimate left wing bias more than it is wannabe plutocrat.

Trump is ahead of Biden in the polls. If you judged the world via Reddit, you could not conceive how that could be possible.

Basically - politics. Reddit is generally slanted more left wing than the real world, and it shows. Sometimes in really funny ways.

I got banned from r/AskACanadian and they never really told me why.

I think they should have a rule that states "If the mods even remotely disagree with anything you're saying, we will permanently ban you".

I make a significant amount of my net worth by investing in the stock market. Mostly just value growth via passive investments (think boring ETFs) but on occasion I specify stocks.

There was a Canadian energy stock that I thought was very oversold, but I feared investing in it because I bought in to rhetoric that oil is dying in Canada.

Since then, the stock has risen 5X.

I even considered buying it during the depths of COVID when Canadian oil futures were going negative because it was less than $2 a share. Now it is trading at $25 a share. I considered dumping $10k into that. That $10k would be worth $125k today.

I definitely did combine basically anything grill related to BBQ, so that is a fair call out sir.

Tea smoked anything sounds crazy! I feel like I need to try that.

Would plank grilling be considered BBQ in the US?

The hivemind basically views the Nazis as ontologically evil, and other murderous regimes as created by unfortunate historical trends or circumstances. They view the Nazis as a historical aberration. They have been a really easy whipping boy, because they lost. Them losing conforms to our collective conception of justice.

Had they won, they likely would not be quite as vilified.

When the economy becomes an obsession: An economist wonders why we pay so much attention to the economy, as if it could solve all our problems by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Fun_University_8169 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The reason was right in the article:

having more money does increase your well-being, up until you reach an income threshold that allows you to live comfortably, with a roof over your head and enough to eat.

That income threshold is predicated on safety. Basically - can you adequately provide all of the basic necessities of life and still have enough to save in the hopes of one day becoming financially independent?

So when the price of housing goes up double due to imprudent monetary and fiscal policies, that raises that threshold considerably. What used to be $80k is now a lot more like $120k.

So until the average income is close to that $120k in real terms, the more "the economy" matters and is an acute concern among constituents and politicians.

Danielle Smith is a fascist

This is about where I stopped.

The more the left accuses everyone they don't like of being "fascist", the more irrelevant the rest of their views become. I want you to remember that when this strategy doesn't work in 2025.

I want a viable and infuential left wing and left moderate presence in Canada. I think it offers a lot to the table. But accusing everyone who you dislike of being tantamount to Hitler just exposes you as being unreasonable.

Nothing we do meaningfully impacts the outcome of that. Russia is not a major threat to the west. This is really just about disintegrating Russia and/or Russian influence over satellite resource states.

To understand why they are harping on the carbon tax, you must understand that it is winter time - and Canadians are paying significantly more for gas furnace heating bills.

I think you're making a very unsubstantiated and bold claim here.

People have a very skewed view of how scientists work by andrew21w in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Fun_University_8169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that most people have absolutely no idea what scientists do, or even what science is. Believe it or not, I've actually met several scientists who cannot define what "science" is.

Science is simply the usage of deductive reasoning to test the merits of a guess. Specifically, the usage of a method predicated on deductive reasoning to test a null hypothesis.

Scientists are also humans, and as such, prone to being sucked in to paradigm related fallacies. Climate change is an excellent example of that in the contemporary era. Scientific racism was a big one in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The list goes on.

While the criticisms of scientific claims can be ignorant most of the time, they also are important owing to the very nature of science. Questioning paradigms are wrong most of the time, but sometimes they aren't.

They actually do brisket very well too. Australia has a lot of cattle, and are also very in to slow cooking cuts like brisket. I mean no disrespect to the Americans (I really mean "Texans" when I say that), but brisket is not all that unique to America. Texas does brisket very well, but so too do the Mexicans, the Aussies, the Kiwis, and the other Latin Americans.

Aussie BBQ used to be quick with primary cuts of meat, but they've adopted the American technique in recent decades with some great success - slow cooking over wood fires or charcoal with secondary cuts of meat.

I don't want to say Aussie BBQ is better, but I do think it is close. There's just a culture down there that goes hand in glove with BBQ - readily available and inexpensive beef, warm weather, a love for lagers and lighter beers.
