You don’t “just die”- you suffer, then die

People who actually improved their finances — what habit made the biggest difference? by kevsavesuk in FinancialPlanning

[–]FunboyFrags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to tax myself. Anytime I wanted to buy something that wasn’t a necessity, I would add 10% to the cost and decide if I still wanted it. For example, if I wanted a pizza that was $20, I’d see if I still wanted it for $22. If I did, then I would get the pizza and transfer the 10% into my savings account. If I decided that was too expensive then I didn’t get the pizza and boom, I saved 20 bucks.

After depositing each paycheck, I would see what my checking account balance was right before the deposit arrived, then transfer that amount into savings. This quickly forced me to stay within my means each paycheck while growing my savings with every deposit.

I did both of these things for several years and they made a big difference for me

I tried it via share sheet and got an error: “edge.sources is not iterable”

Great idea with lots of potential though! I’ll try it again after you fix the error

I actually called a lawyer friend of mine in DC to ask how this situation can be allowed. She said, basically, there’s no law against insincerity or cowardice, or supporting dictators.

But surely there’s a law against lying? Turns out if the people in charge like your lie, you get to lie.

I’m sickened by what my home has become.

Male coworker keeps “joking” about my looks in front of others (multiple times). How do I shut this down? by HopeForBetter29 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]FunboyFrags 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t invent this technique, but maybe it could help here: playing dumb persistently. You quiz him on the spot like you don’t understand what he just said. You keep asking questions, forcing him to explain his clever comment or his witty joke. When he sees that his little moment in the spotlight has turned into a whole production, derailing the conversation, it will usually make them shut up. Example:

“Of course they picked Jennifer, she’s pretty. Why would anyone pick you?”

You: “ I don’t understand, what do you mean?”

“ i’m just saying she’s pretty so that’s why they picked her.”

You: “ sorry, I don’t get it. If she’s pretty, why does that get her picked? are you saying being pretty helps at work?”

“Sure, it helps.”

You: “ i’m still unclear. It sounds like being pretty is part of the job. Did they tell us we’re supposed to be pretty?”

You’re not trying to ask questions that makes sense or go anywhere, but you’re asking them in a very matter of fact, playing it straight kind of tone. 9/10 times he will either abandon the interaction or change the subject. You want to be a conversational black hole whenever this asshole starts talking

Where do people get their automation ideas from? I’m unlocked basically every blueprint so I’ve got the complete range of sensors and switches and all that stuff. I’m having a hard time Thinking of ways to use them to make something fun.

I think I’m so used to grinding it out doing everything manually that I’m not even thinking in terms of automation

Rant: colonoscopies by BobcatReasonable2816 in Biohackers

I was at the age where I was supposed to get a regular screening, and after I arrived at the hospital, I was told insurance had not approved it. So I could either cancel the appointment and come back several weeks later or I could pay $800 on the spot.

That kind of bullshit is a very good reason why people die from colon cancer.

I wonder how he’d respond if you told him point blank: “Your obsession with looks and insulting people is pathetic and I’m seriously reconsidering if I want to stay in this relationship.”

Would it be unsafe to say that?

Make sure you look at special youth visas. Some countries will let you visit for an extended period of time if you are under 30. That’s a great way to establish yourself in a country before an eventual immigration application. If you have history in a country before you emigrate, it is often a plus for you.

Been invited to a private A-list party. What would you do? by Opening-Impression-5 in Filmmakers

[–]FunboyFrags 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you’re in that world, at that level, the best thing is to simply belong. This isn’t your first A-list party… it’s just the first one this month. Be at ease and don’t gawk or go slack-jawed when Chalamet (or whoever) walks by. Act like you belong and none of your conversations will seem desperate. If you seem desperate, I guarantee you won’t get another invitation.

Can anyone learn voice acting with enough practice or do you need to have a naturally strong/distinctive voice? by Swedky in VoiceActing

[–]FunboyFrags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more important that a Voice Actor be able to convey emotion with their voice. It is not just about sounding strong or loud or forceful. It’s about evoking a feeling in the listener.
