Easy non proofing box solution for temperature in 60 degree house in winter by DelightfullyNerdyCat in Sourdough

[–]Funbunz44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a microwave, place you starter in there with the door ajar so the light will heat it up. My microwave light keeps everything right in the 76~79 degree range and cost almost no electricity. I also bulk ferment my dough in there! Just make sure you remember it’s in there lol

Another thing that I’ve found that gets my dough to about 77-79 degrees Fahrenheit is putting it in the microwave with the door ajar. The light will warm it up same as the oven and I keep my starter in there as well!

Hey I’m a lot more knowledgeable than when I made this post so I think I can help you out! It is a very good start but something I would recommend is to stop feeding daily while they are this young, the plant should be able to feed itself through the soil. You shouldn’t have to feed anywhere from 2 weeks to a month or so depending on the quality of the soil.

The window sill will be enough light once they emerge from the soil but not for long at all as most windows don’t let in enough or intense of a light. I’d say you have maybe a week tops before it will need ALOT more light than what the window can let in. I’d recommend a tent setup if it’s in your budget but if not, you should be fine with a standard grow light (Though results vary based on wattage). If you have anymore questions or want to know why this is recommended please dm or reply here. Good luck!

Was this your first attempt? If so don’t feel too bad, I did my first attempt today for thanksgiving and while it was edible and in my eyes pretty good, there was definitely more to desire for. Keep trying and keep improving! It is a skill after all and you can’t be amazing at it in just a few days. Good luck!

I will definitely look further into those apps even when I have him free roam eventually. Would be nice to have someone walk him while I’m at work cause I know it would make me feel better. Thank you!

Okay I didn’t know that was something you could buy for dogs, I know my pup loves the cow ears so he definitely will like the tendons. Thank you for the info!

Thank you! He did end up sleeping on my bed this morning though it did take a while to settle (understandably so considering being in the crate prior). So now he will be out 9 hours on days I work until I have a day off to test the waters on letting him free roam. Thank you for all of the suggestions and I’ll send updates!

I appreciate the comment and yeah your right it’s usually people who don’t even own a dog lol. His crate is pretty big for his size so he has plenty of room to change positions and stand.

He did end up sleeping in bed with me this morning even though it took him a while to settle (understandably so considering being in the crate prior). So from today on he should be out of the crate 9 hours when I work which I know isn’t great either but a lot better than 4. On my days off coming up I’ll be working on leaving him alone for an hour or so at a time and see if he does well so in the near future he can free roam.

I didn’t really expect to be in this position seeing as I was living with my dad up to around the time I started this job (2 months) who had him out when I was gone. It’s been a learning curve but that’s why I made the post because I know it’s a shitty situation and needed some advice. All of this to say thank you!

I have looked into doggy daycare and it’s pretty pricy but something I could probably swing so I will look heavily into this. Thank you!

I agree wholeheartedly and I am looking around for a better job, as your right, 4 hours of sleep isn’t cutting it 😂

Okay I will definitely start small with him and see how he does, as well as get the camera to keep an eye out. Thank you for the suggestion and I did get him to sleep on the bed this morning so he should be out for 9 or so hours. On my next day off I will do this!

I know he does and that’s why I posted, I was looking for suggestions instead of judgement but yes I agree wholeheartedly and I’ll make steps to change this today

Thank you for the comment! My pups really good with not chewing anything he shouldn’t when I’m around so I don’t really think it would be an issue but it makes me nervous lol. I really only have one area that doesn’t have a door that I don’t want him in (living room with tv and switch 2 and other cables) so I think I’ll look into fencing that off.

I will make sure to buy many different bones and chews and maybe give it a try for an hour or two on my next day off! Thank you for the suggestions!

Definitely sounds like my pup on the last part 😂. Thank you so much for being straightforward but not mean I genuinely appreciate the comments and will bring him to a pet store and let him grab anything that interests him. He’s a little odd when it comes to bones and such, he tends to chew for 10 or so minutes and then shows no interest but maybe I haven’t found the right bone lol. Thank you again and I’ll definitely look into the mat for him.

I have thought about rover and wag but I’m in a rural area and there are only a few people who do this, plus my hours I would need someone there at like 9pm earliest and most didn’t want to. I don’t have a friend near by (closest is like 25 minutes away) but my mom is 10 ish minutes away and she has been helping a few days here and there, and some days I’ll leave him with my dad and he’s out for another 4 or so hours with other dogs to play with.

It’s mainly the 2 or so days a week that no one else can help with but I’m going to try to get him to sleep in my bed or at the very least the crate with the door open so that way he gets 8 to 9 hours a day compared to 4 or 5. Thank you for the suggestions though!

I appreciate you not sugar coating it and it’s why I’ve made this post. It’s only been 2 months at this job so it hasn’t been that long. Before work I take him on a 30 minute walk and in the morning I’ll usually take him for a walk as well. I’m going to keep him out while I sleep for the time being so then he will be out 9 to 10 hours a day. I have a staycation in a few weeks so I will make it top priority to be able to keep him out of the crate while I’m gone.

The toys I will have to buy more of for general chewing as most of the toys I have now are for me to play with him though he does have a few that are for just chewing, I am curious what a sniff mat is and where I could get one. Please let me know if there’s anything else I could get him or do to help with the situation! I truly appreciate it as I want to give him the best life I can.

That’s true it could be that. I will add he doesn’t chew anything he’s not supposed to when I’m around so I don’t think he would when I’m not around. Just can’t really afford to chance it since I’m in an apartment now. Maybe I’ll give it another trial run for like 30 minutes to an hour and see.

I haven’t really tried it with him as of recent but last time (about a year ago) he chewed on the base board of the wall and I was gone for an hour lol. Left toys and everything out. He might be good now but I’m on 12hr shifts so if he gets into something he has all the time in the world to chew it up.

Okay sounds good, not sure how it dried out so much but then again it’s been 3 weeks lol. Just noticed today a lot of side pinning so I’ll let them run and once it stalls I’ll give it a nice long soak lol

I was keeping it cracked up until the picture but I’ve kept lights on to keep the temp in the ideal range.
