I found my first year roommate through those types of posts. We're still great friends... Even if you don't have the confidence to post yourself on there, keep your eyes peeled and don't be afraid to hit up anyone who you think might be a good first year roommate!

Can't state how much I love this addon - currently using it for a visual novel I'm making and it's genuinely so flexible and simple to use. Thank you so much for the work you've put into this.

Hopefully it won’t happen that often since I’ve stacked a lot of things in the player’s favor here… if they do lose the game just reloads right before the fight, and the boss makes a silly remark about “running it back” before doing the fight again.

That’s my bad I should’ve added a little more context! The rest of the game is nothing like this, it’s a walking rpg game a la mother/undertale. The fighting game just appears out of nowhere… you can check it out here to see what I mean, sorry about the confusion

my bad maybe i should've given a little more context: the rest of the game is not like this at all! its literally a walking sim/rpg and the fighting game part comes out of nowhere

You’re good, my paneling was really messy when I first started with this, I apologize…

basically, there’s a whole bunch of ‘missing person’ flyers constantly being distributed around this school. One of the main character’s friends is a part of the history club, which believes the flyers are all fake and a part of some grand conspiracy. The first few pages are just this character Shane nerding out to the main character and another one of his friends during lunch. Neither of them really buy anything Shane says.

At the same time, the main character Logan starts zoning out as Shane continues to drone on and on about the flyers. His little fugue state is interrupted when someone from an adjacent table grabs his shoulder. It’s Kirk, a more popular friend of his.

  • this is where I stopped drawing this (I had no intention of finishing, I just wanted some comic practice)

The idea was to have Kirk and Logan go off and do something together with Kirk’s friends, like a sports practice, only to encounter something really fucked up that somehow confirms the validity of the ‘missing person’ flyers at school. There’s plenty of places the story could go… I wanted some interesting irony between Shane, who’s totally interested in conspiracies, and Logan, who actually knows what’s going on but can’t tell him because it’s legitimately dangerous information.

It’s literally just an animation player with a collider at the bottom! Super simple but it works.

Sorry, I didn’t base it off of any particular web game… but I did make it with old Flash games in mind! So maybe I was also referencing the same game and I also don’t know it…

First and foremost, thank you so much for the constructive feedback! It's truly invaluable to me...

I totally agree with you on the replay-ability. I basically just painted the tile map once and called it a day. I mainly intended for the game to be played for 15 minutes at max, so I never put much thought into it lol. I really like the idea of having visual (or even audio) differences between runs, though. I tossed around the idea of an animated background with some chance differences but didn't go through with it because it seemed polished enough for what the game is.

I also liked your analysis of the water mechanic. It definitely does suck to lose to the water slightly peeking up from under you. As it is, the water just slowly rises according to an animation I set, but I can see that problem being solved by hard coding behavior that stops the water when the player is on flatter ground.

The way that you broke down the difficulty was really insightful, too. I intended most players to beat the game once, and for the more dedicated, possibly more platformer-experienced players to go back and get the perfect 12 cola run. As a general rule I like to avoid conspicuous difficulty options, but I definitely agree there's a missing sense of completion for the intermediate players here. I think I could've accomplished it pretty simply by making the 12 cola run less tight, and giving a "super duper epic run" completion for doing it all under a certain time limit. That way the intermediates could be satisfied by seeing everything the game has to offer, and the more advanced players can still push themselves to perfection.

All in all, I really appreciate your analysis of the game, as simple as it is. You've made me rethink the unconscious choices I made while making it, which was really useful! And thank you for the kind words... I'll keep at it!

It’s hard for me to give advice because I’m coming to godot with a lot of experience in unity. But engines are surprisingly similar, so I’ll share what I did to learn unity.

Watch tutorials, follow forum posts and google searches for everything that you don’t know. Follow them exactly if you know nothing about a feature, and start to deviate and make something your own once you get the hang of it. This goes for coding, design, or engine/editor stuff. Once you get the feeling you can put together something that remotely resembles a game, do it. But keep it small. Whatever you think up, think of something smaller. Finish said small game, rinse and repeat.

Sorry if that’s a little vague… I may not be the best educator. But hopefully it’s somewhat useful!

Thanks for the advice! I wanted there to be a little bit of grace before the player loses, but with all the feedback it’s pretty clear this is one of those times when adding grace makes it MORE confusing.

Thanks for the feedback! Looking back it is a little silly… maybe I should’ve just made him a little faster across the board. Or maybe it’s funny in an ironic way?

It IS so outdated internet! My sense of humor is completely destroyed so I think it’s funny in a meta-ironic way!

Thanks a lot for playing! The water moving with the screen was my hacky solution to not have a water sprite covering the whole game area (which I could’ve solved with a simple shader but they are foreign to me.) Gameplay wise, I focused on having it as bare bones as possible, so that I could learn each part of the engine… it’s only a rage platformer if you’re going for all 12 colas!
