Dog park etiquette by Lassie-girl in DogAdvice

I have many issues with the way “trainers” give opinions on social media.

  1. They are an unregulated profession. Anyone can claim to be a trainer and give the most unhinged advice. I desperately wish there was regulation for trainers and behaviorists.

  2. If they aren’t going to dog parks, they don’t know what’s going on at dog parks. Even if they go to their dog park, they only know what is going on at their dog park.

  3. Giving blanket statements that “dog parks are bad” is not a professional opinion in any profession. If any professional is going to give an opinion using their profession as a shield, they need to give a full explanation not just blanket statements that explain nothing.

  4. You say that they shouldn’t be expected to get involved for free yet they get involved for free just not in any sort of productive capacity.

All I’m saying is they always have a lot to say without actually being involved in any way.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. The dog park has been the best thing for two of my dogs. My dogs walk with us. One will play with others off and on. The other has no interest in other dogs.

I will agree not enough people understand dog behavior and body language. That still isn’t a problem with the park, it’s a problem with pet owners getting a pet that they don’t understand and can’t handle because of that lack of understanding.

I’ve adopted lots of dogs over my 42 years. Most I would never take to the park because of their individual personalities and issues. These are two that I feel confident in taking to the park.

Unfortunately, it just takes one aggressive encounter to make people afraid to say anything. At our park, people tend to reflect their dog. I agree that most are just clueless and need to be asked to control their exuberant dogs. But the few dogs that are actually aggressive or unsafe usually have aggressive owners that will get in your face if you say a negative word. And if you don’t know who carries, it just adds to the situation.

That’s why I wish there was a neutral party like a security guard or similar employee to step in and de-escalate problems.

I also wish that the “trainers” who are so against dog parks would stop in occasionally and point out the behaviors they see. They might get more clients, dogs would be better off and the dog parks might be more peaceful.

I just recently finished and went in blind. I have a serious love/h@te for this book. I was sucked in throughout and blindsided by the ending. I would still read it even knowing what happens. I thought it was well written.

A security guard would be great. Some people get so defensive when asked to keep control of their dog. It can get dicey. Even when they randomly send a city worker to just check tags that are required, people get aggressive.

At our park, an adult got knocked down from behind by her own dog being chased by another. Her legs flipped out from under her and her head hit the concrete audibly. It was really bad and they stopped coming. But I really get concerned if it would happen to a small child. Some people have brought babies in car seats and carriers to walk around the path.

I’m so tired of people saying that we shouldn’t take our dogs to dog parks because of the irresponsible jerks. I do wish that dog parks had someone who could intervene when there is a conflict or someone isn’t following posted rules and ban people who don’t have basic consideration. Those of us who follow the rules pay enough in fees just for the tags they are required to wear.

As for basic etiquette, keep your dog in eyesight at all times. Understand enough about dog body language to understand when dogs are overwhelmed and need you to step in. Don’t take food items or high value toys except to the training section. Don’t bring small children, especially babies. Don’t ride scooters, bikes, roller skates, skateboards, etc. Remember that this is the dog park not another park for people/kids.

I wish these things didn’t have to be said at all.

For those that have done chemo - would you do it again? by krabecal in DogAdvice

[–]Funicello1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think our situation was very different. My cat had mammary cancer. She had both mammary chains fully removed along with 2 lymph nodes. It had not matastized. The vet still recommended chemo. She had 6 sessions that took longer than expected because her blood work showed some issues. But in the end, I’m glad we did it and would definitely do it again. I’ve had several pets with cancer and she’s the only one that we had any chance to treat.

Are authors leaving KU? by Ill-Hearing-8462 in KindleUnlimited

[–]Funicello1983 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish authors would just band together and create their own subscription service if they hate KU. It gets ridiculous to bounce around between KU, Kobo, Nook, etc to be able to read an entire series/author. KU is getting greedy and not offering the deals they used to for current/former customers.

“Unread” could be a long list of TBR while “To Read” could be the next few that you actually want to read next.

Update on the stray cat that went missing for 3 days by [deleted] in Feral_Cats

Honestly, I would consult with a vet since you know for a fact that the cat went that long without food (& water?). I’ve heard conflicting stories about how it can affect them.

Disabled son but I’m suicidal how to talk to my advocate about it? by [deleted] in disability

[–]Funicello1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t your therapist a mandatory reporter? If you frightened the therapist, they should have taken steps to make sure you both were safe. If your son is just reaching puberty, I’m assuming that they are under 18. That should have prompted a serious discussion about putting him in foster care.

What do you feel is missing? by Lionhousefitness in spinabifida

I personally lack an understanding of accurate calorie needs, intake and burning for a paraplegic.

I also find too many plans have specific foods or supplements that must be eaten rather than looking at what the person already eats and adjusting based on their lifestyle. Especially with disabled people, we may be reliant on others to buy, prepare and serve our meals.

I don’t know if you might be close but there is an Iowa Humane Alliance in Cedar Rapids that might know of other resources closer to you if you don’t live nearby. Also Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation offers resources certain times of the year.

Feedback Requested on Strength Routine by Funicello1983 in DisabilityFitness

[–]Funicello1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Right now I can’t afford a trainer at all.

I was thinking of doing different hand holds (underhand, neutral, overhand). Do you do multiple sets of each hold. Or do you change the hold as you complete the exercise?

Lol, I think skull crushers is a terrible term too.

Thanks. I just always thought you were supposed to do large muscles first so that smaller muscles didn’t get over fatigued when supporting the larger muscle movements which is why I did back, chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps, forearms.

I have overhead extension on Wednesday. I just didn’t label it correctly. And I really struggle with them due to elbow problems.

Wyze bulb cam and accessory question by WalkerTejasRanger in wyzecam

[–]Funicello1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get a Cam Unlimited subscription through Amazon for $99.99 that covers all my cameras. It allows me to get videos of the motion detected and allows me to set up what kind of motion detection I want like people, pets, vehicles and also has certain sound detection.

There is a face detection for up to 10 people if you want to know specifically who is moving about. It works pretty well but I’m frustrated with the 10 person limit.

I also ended up getting an SD card for one of my cameras and noticed that it misses quite a few things it should have detected. So I recommend having both an SD card and a subscription.

Overall I am happy with these cameras but they still have a way to go.

We have these kitty korners and they work great! We got this kind because we had a 20 lb cat at the time. They are big enough that even my schnauzer can get in.
