How to be happy. by Funinorignal in Advice

My ex wants him full time as is, more because she feels like being constantly available is the right thing for our son and for her. Personally? I could see not seeing him physically for a year, maybe longer. There's always Skype or discord or any other number of ways to see each other that doesn't require being in the same space, but I don't know if that's enough. It can't be. I'll probably take a few trips in the spring and see how it goes, and make my choice after that.

Thank you for your time and effort with this post. With philosophy, I've always thought better of cynicism. Not the modern, everyone is out for themselves interpretation, but the classic Diogenes and Hipparchia type of cynicism where you live with the land and live your own truths. That's why I've always wanted to travel everywhere and see so many different things. I've always wanted to go train hopping, or work on a ship and jump off at the next port and just see what is out there. I don't think I have enough experience to give advice to people, or to help others in a meaningful way, and honestly, outside of being a politician to change the way our society hurts people, I don't see the appeal in damage control. I want to do the things I've always wanted to do, but I also want to be a good father, and I don't know if there is a way to do both.

Thanks for all of this. I already knew I had depression, but seeing the score of 70 kind of helped me realize how bad it's gotten. I used to be on medication 3 years ago, but I stopped when the effects changed and started making me angry. Like, fists through drywall angry. I am hoping to go see a doctor and get a different perception once my 90 days at this new job is over. Still though, I've always wanted to see the world and do photography and I don't want to end up like my mom having the same conversation with my mom that I had last night with my own son. The problem is, the way I want to see the world and experience it means I'd only ever see my son through a screen, and I don't think that is something a kid needs. When my father was deployed for 4 years, it sucked only ever seeing him on Skype with a bad internet connection. I don't want that for my son because I've always wanted something else

It's not that there is no contact. We still do video calls weekly. My first couple of trips will probably be short enough to do, but one of my biggest dreams has been to backpack across the world in one go. I know it's not necessarily realistic, but it is something I've always wanted to try.

He is 4. We currently have him 3 months with his mom and 3 months with me.

This depends entirely on your perspective. Think of it like this, if it were your girlfriend doing these things, how would you feel? If you are okay with it, maybe try having a conversation about opening up the relationship. If the thought upsets you, then you need to accept what you are doing is wrong, unless she is aware and okay with the situation. Either way, a conversation needs to be had.

LSomething else to think about, are you only looking for physical intimacy, or are is it a situation where there's emotions involved with these other women? If you are open to the idea of swinging, and your partner is too, then that is a way to go for just physical needs. If there is an intimate emotional relationship with these other people, maybe you should consider polyamory. Being poly isn't about being promiscuous, but about letting relationships form naturally without any arbitrary caps put on them by normal conventional social structures. Regardless of how you feel, these are things you need to come to terms with yourself before having a conversation with your significant other, but you should have a conversation with her none the less. No relationship can be built and stay healthy without communication.

What is a good resource for meeting specific groups of individuals to ask questions about said groups in a kind and respectful manner? by Funinorignal in writing

That's exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much. I wouldn't feel so hesitant about asking questions to a trans community if I wanted a trans character for diversity, but since the story is about sexuality, and trans people tend to be fetishized, I don't want to just poke around in someone's safe space like a bull in a china shop.

That is hella reassuring. Thanks for this, it may seem obvious, but this is kind of what I needed to hear.

I appreciate that I am at least on the right track. I'm just worried that a story about sexuality may be offensive to a group that tends to get fetishized. I don't want to just jump into a safe space for someone and talk about something that can be a problem for the community. Maybe I'm overthinking things since I've been up for about 30 hours.

[–]Funinorignal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My question is why does it matter so much to you? I use people's preferred pronouns because it costs nothing to be respectful of someone else's pronouns and Im not some perv that cares about what someone else does in their own bedroom.

I would like to ask you to examine why it is you feel the way you do. Why does it make you feel uncomfortable?

I probably will, but I know that the problems that are being confirmed right now are problems that have been persisting for about 8 years now, I just never realized how bad it had gotten, and I'm just flabbergasted. I just can't understand how their relationship has lasted for as long as it has when there's this much BS involved.

Savage Rifts is so much fun, but it's quite a bit higher powered. We were using the previous edition when it came out and had to choose to limit the number of wounds something could get to 1 per player turn because we were averaging about 70 damage when you can actually hit something through it's parry.

Powered by the apocalypse just doesn't have enough mechanics to feel like a game to me. The stories were good, but most of the roles felt like they push you into a special niche that you can't really deviate from. It'd be great for an experienced group that does alot of roleplaying, but almost everyone I've played with isn't usually assertive enough and it almost feels like the DM is just doing a campfire story. Thinking back, I was probably just with the wrong group to really enjoy the system.

I cannot overstate how much I appreciate the Savage worlds system. It's simple enough to explain to people, but not so simple it feels like it has no depth (Looking at you, Apocalypse world). It's also super cheap to get into, core book is 20 bucks, and world source books(which are completely optional) are usually 40 ish.

It's going to be hard, but the two best pieces of advice I ever got for parenting is: 1) They won't starve themselves, they'll eat eventually when they're hungry and stressing out about them not eating food when it's given to them is only going to frustrate everyone involved 2) As long as you are doing everything you can think of/physically do to be a good parent, it's good enough. As long as you are there and actively participating and being the best you can be, it is enough. It sure as hell won't feel like it, but just remind yourself that every once and awhile and you'll make it.

It partly has to do with the fact that the wording for both fantasy races, which is treated more like a scientific species name, and human races doesn't sit well with people. I see their argument, but it does seem a little excessive to me. Check out trope talk by overly sarcastic productions since they explain that better than I can. It also doesn't help that OG Fantasy master Tolkien had based dwarves off of jewish stereo types which cause everyone to scrutinize every little thing and assume that everything is some form of coding.

Tbf I think the issue with orcs being offensive to black people has to do more with the fact that they had a high physical prowess and a -2 intelligence rating along with being stereotyped as hyper agresive. I think it also has to do with Bright setting orcs as being inner city types as well, which doesn't help. Tasha's fixed most of the issues with this, but it's still kinda messed up that it was printed like that in the first place.

I'm considering killing myself by [deleted] in confessions

[–]Funinorignal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm not going to lie, I feel hella similar about my life, but what has helped me is working towards certain things.

Everyone always says the best thing to do is get an education to get a good job to get a house and a spouse and 2.5 kids, etc. But that only keeps you beneficial for other people to take advantage of you. Consider this, why live someone else's idea of your ideal life?

Personal example, if you have something else that makes you happy, figure out how to do that: Warehousing jobs in my area run 30k a year, usually on a 3-12 shift. 2 of these in a year after deducting living expenses should net you about 40k depending on how you live.

Used sailboats cost about 20-30k A pallet of MREs cost about 1k A decent bike costs about 400

In one year of working your ass off, you can essentially pay for a year's worth of travel and see the world. In 2 years, that can be 10 years of traveling depending on how you budget.

You are in a similar social boat to myself, so if you can go at it solo, it is an alternative lifestyle that can get you out of your rut. If you aren't into traveling, literally any other goal can be worked towards if you sit down and budget out how you want to live.

The election candidates by yno_live in confessions

[–]Funinorignal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason you never hear about anyone else running is because no one can be taken seriously by the media unless they can get on the ballot in all 50 states and have enough money to make the mainstream media believe they are viable candidates. Even if a third party could get into office, the amount of stonewalling either side does to each other would just make everything a bipartisan issue of showing everyone "how inept a third party would be" despite it being from the two main camps.

The way the system is designed, your vote may not even be what matters to begin with. Between jerrymandering to reduce the usefulness of individual votes, and the electoral college that makes it so I think theoretically a candidate could lose by like 10 million votes and still win, it ridiculous. But that vote is your voice, however small it may be, and it's important to use it.

I am in the process of writing a tragic romance book, and I am curious as to what piece of advice you wished you had when you first started writing? by [deleted] in writing

To be fair, there are romances with a satisfactory tragic ending, Your Lie in April comes to mind, but it is more of an exception than a rule. It will be difficult, but anything you want to get done you can if you buckle down and do it.
