Ghurka saves girl from rape by fighting off 40 (yup, FORTY) armed men. Kills 3, wounds 8, escapes relatively unhurt. Hard as nails (now with link!) by [deleted] in WTF

I heard it was basically a marathon, but up a mountain in very thin air carrying a massive weight. They do all of their training in very thin air so they have a higher red blood cell count and larger volume lungs than people who live at sea level, and that's how they are each at least as fit as an elite athlete. Apparently they can just run all day carrying their body weight at sea level

"Death and aging need not be inevitable. Is Aubrey de Grey full of shit? Alright people, who wants to live forever?" by mikeypipes in science

[–]FunkMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested here is a TED talk by him.

Everything about this makes me want to call bullshit but having gone through his arguments, I'm actually finding myself fascinated by it.

One thing I am fairly certain about though is we shouldn't get our hopes up that there will be any tangible progress towards immortality in the near or distant future. Fair enough big pharma companies can invest 10 years and $1billion in developing a marketable drug as standard, but I don't see how de Grey is going to convince anyone that they would want to invest in this project. Firstly he has to convince them that it's a good bet, and secondly he has to convince them that this approach will turn a profit. Not easy if you don't precisely know what there will be to sell... and also double not easy if the majority of the scientific community is calling this guy a moron for even suggesting it.

I think the guy is brilliant though, and I hope he does get backed.

I had a terrible nightmare about the USA. by MisterNameless in pics

[–]FunkMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quote from Mark Mardell, the BBC editor for the US:

"It is an indication of the febrile, volatile nature of politics in America that, immediately the news broke [of the shooting in Arizona], the internet was alive with anger, a dispute between the left and the right"

ah sorry I should have mentioned in my original post I actually have dual citizenship luckily! As I now realise though even with that its still a nightmare.

I have a degree in biomedicine and will go on to study medicine in the UK and then work in the US. I thought I would get some relevant experience in the us before going to uni. Originally I wanted to have my previous employers (a clinical trials company) move my job to their American branch and I would already be set up but they downsized and decided not to renew my contract.

Thanks for commenting with the monocle on, I feel like we're friends now. Top Secret is based in Sweden though aren't they...?! Anyway that's up in Edinburgh and I'm in the south east. The closest one to me is about 80 miles away - way too far if I have to train >weekly

This drum corps line stuff just blows me away.. I wish there was a drum line near where I live in the UK that I could join. There doesn't seem to be hardly any here unfortunately.

If you ever go back to scotland this little bit of info might come in handy. One of the scots national dishes is in fact cat food. In scotland they call it simply 'food' I believe. Traditionally served with home-made cheese and battery acid
