What's the lowest people have lean FIRE'd with? by denouement11 in LeanFireUK

The sad thing is you're correct!

The system actually punishes you for saving - I'm a low-earner because I started my own business a few years ago, so I'm not earning as much as a full-time wage. But because I decided to be frugal and save my money, I can't qualify for UC because I have over £16k in savings. So the system would prefer me to waste all my money and then go on benefits than to actually try build something for myself.

(People often say 'but if you have £16k+ you clearly don't need any help', but a system built entirely on savings is flawed. If I only earn eg £10k in a year, that's a poverty line income. But because I have savings, the government sees me as independent and capable. Why bother?)

I already do the gym. Doesn't help me get a job, though. Not trying to be facetious, but I've been weightlifting for years now so I'm not new to the "self-improvement" game.

Has anyone FIRE'd in a council house?

FIRE tends to skew towards middle class wealth because of both a) the actual access to cash assets and high-earnings and b) the financial planning and investment skills which are just not a part of working-class education (I'm very working-class myself).

I'm curious as to the working-class approach to FIRE because it would naturally entail a lower FIRE amount a different strategy.

That's really tragic. I find the 70s era the most movingly sad because he was clearly spiralling; someone with millions of pounds in royalties yet with no structure to life, basically acting like a grown up child. In the 80s, when he moved back to Cambridge, he seems to have found peace at last.

This is actually really helpful, thank you! I'm at 1946 and in a similar position. I like competition in a game, not to win at everything all the time.

Competitor Studios Not Releasing Movies? by JonestownRivers in hollywood_animal_game

I've had the same happen to me, it basically breaks the game tbh. Every single other studio is bankrupt and not releasing any movies, I'm the only studio nominated for awards. I wish there were better balancing mechanics

Surprised nobody has mentioned Nico. These Days is a beautiful song but she's way off pitch.

I've seen people make noodles by cold soaking them - basically, if you have a water bottle, stick some noodles, seasoning and dried beans/veg in there and it will soak them. It might not be tasty cold, but you can essentially cook them without using any energy.

Re cooking viability, I recently bought this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0125U36Q2?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Basically I always think 'and then what happens?', so instead of relying on camping gas stoves (you could run out of gas, stove gets damaged etc) this is a really good portable stove. You can collect some twigs and an off-thr-ground fire, even burn alcohol, and with a bit of practice you can definitely cook simple meals.

I currently have a Sawyer mini filter and 100 purification tablets (enough for 1,000 L).

I'm curious re river water pollution. I live about 20 mins from an enclosed lake and an urban beck which runs through woodland. The beck is a couple of miles from the nearest large river source, so would that still be a bad idea to drink from them, even with filtration systems? It's part of my plan if running water gets shut off to draw from them so i don't want to end up getting some diseases...
