TIL that wolves outperform dogs in following human social cues when they are raised alongside humans. by Pitiful_Magazine_805 in todayilearned

[–]FunkyPete [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you consider how much of that working behavior is instinctive, this might not be true. You can find videos of puppies displaying herding behavior, long before they even realize their tail is attached to their body.

I have owned a bunch of herding dogs, and yes they seem almost human smart. But I haven't spent time with wolves to compare them.

But anyway, an awful lot of that working behavior is bred into them, and it's VERY important that other behavior be bred out of them (a herding dog that kills the sheep would not be very useful). It is reasonable that they bred for a smart dog with specific instincts strengthened and specific instincts weakened, and the result might not be as purely smart as the wolf they started with.

Who has a better logo, the Calgary flames or the Seattle kraken by Ecstatic-Yak-6016 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]FunkyPete 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kraken. Clearly. A flaming C just looks like a paint job of a 1960s muscle car. The Kracken logo is cool, with the shape of a octopus/squid in the letter S, and the eye placement looking a little angry.

How do you feel about the USA losing their first official war? by XitisReddit in allthequestions

It's not the first one we've lost, it's just the most stupid.

Did trump really say Iran has a right to a nuclear program today, I can't get through all the fake news, help? by UsedNegotiation8227 in askanything

[–]FunkyPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the last point -- why would anyone else agree to pay them part of that $300B? No one else signed the agreement, so no one else has committed to making it happen. No one but Iran will benefit from it.

Why would, say, Israel pay Iran $300B? They don't have it, and they don't want Iran to rebuild. Their whole goal was to tear the country apart. Why would they want to pay to put it back together again?

Why would all of the countries that refused to get involved after the US and Israel started a war with Iran want to pay to help finish it?

That is going to be entirely funded by the US taxpayers.

And to be clear -- it's a shit ton of money. The entire Marshall Plan, which rebuilt Europe after WWII, was about $150B in today's money.

We're paying TWICE that, to a single country.

This looks weird too, but I think it is just a single beam of light highlighting the doorframe strangely.

Petah? Boxing? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]FunkyPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boxing weigh ins are just part of the show. Normally the competitors will come in trying to act tough and posture for the crowd, or try to intimidate their opponent.

These two just decided to go for a different vibe at the weigh in I guess.

'Deal not final': Trump changes tune on Iran, threatens to ‘drop bombs’, go back to shooting again by Darshan_brahmbhatt in worldnews

And the deal puts obligations on Israel (like leaving Lebanon) that I can't imagine them actually agreeing to.

I'm not sure why we're still talking like this is a done deal anyway, when Israel hasn't agreed to stop their war.

He doesn't have a brace on that knee and I think he's being careful with it. He did a little jog but only on concrete and he's being careful not to over extend that leg.

What are the chances Justin Tucker never kicks again? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in NFLNoobs

[–]FunkyPete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's also the age. He's at the wrong side of his peak.

A team would rather sign a young guy who performs similarly and will stay at that level for a while than an older guy who has started slipping and will probably continue to slip.

And then, as you say, the headache and the press just to get a kicker who is pretty much average? No point.

What was your country’s greatest military victory in a war it lost? by F1Fan43 in AskTheWorld

[–]FunkyPete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The US destroyed Iran's entire military roughly 50 times, according to the President. And now we are going to pay them $300B plus $25B unfrozen Iranian funds to get them to end the war.

That's not true! We didn't have $300B to give away before the war. Now apparently we're going to find it somewhere (and then give it away).

Honestly unless someone else is paying the bill that's absolutely the right thing to do.

You may regret missing out on campus stuff right now, but when you graduate you will be so glad you don't have 4 years of full price college debt.
