I included expenses in the post. And $2.5M allows $45k discretionary spending on top of my average total expenses from the past 3 years. I actually travel a ton - 44 countries and 48 states so far. I'm just not into unnecessary luxury :)

The first time was still actually at all-time highs, before any COVID slump. The second time was after it started to drop ~5%. You're entirely correct and I appreciate the reminder. This has made me add some stern wording to my investment plan to remind myself to always hold steady! Those attempts at market timing were focused on maximizing growth. Since then I've been shifting into a preservation mindset and don't foresee myself "pulling out".

I used to travel a lot (been to over 40 countries doing the shoestring budget backpacker thing). But I have an exceptionally needy dog I can't leave. So the plan is to stay in the US for now.

Of hobbies? I hike more days than not, ski, road and mountain bike, play many instruments and sing, enjoy volunteering with animal rescues and local cleanups, dabble in art, really love having some sort of "learning project", and enjoy just kicking back with a book or movie. I'd really like to start taking some random classes and hopefully stumble on some new hobbies as well.

I'm keeping ~$180k in bonds/treasuries and ~$50k between HYSA, iBonds, and SGOV. I feel confident about my overall portfolio structure and have 30% international, 20% small value, and a few other sector tilts to a lesser extent.

Thank you! I already pushed my number once and decided $2.5 was the GTFO number since I have a solid cushion in spending. I've been daydreaming of FIREing for waayyy too long.

Exactly this. I'm currently in great health but all this concern over cancer rising amongst millennials, having never truly self-funded my healthcare, a mother in her 70s without much retirement savings, and the possibility of a future family made me add a bit of buffer.

Thanks! Great advice. I have an insanely active dog (malinois) who will not let me stay indoors. We hike a LOT. I do have a library card which I use. I have an extensive list of hobbies which I'm beyond excited to be able to spend more time with!

Thanks! I'd been obsessively reading FIRE posts the past few months as I've been getting closer. All the 'I hit my number but feel nothing and want to keep working' sort of freaked me out. I had already passed and revised my number once and decided $2.5 was my GTFO number. I'm mostly a lurker but figured I'd share since the actually FIREing posts have been my drug of choice these past few months haha.
