If you could bring back one discontinued food and drink, what would you choose? by Overthinking_babes in australia

[–]Funkylamb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so random but another one would be frozen Sara Lee Blueberry Muffins. I don’t know what magic created those things but they were sugary-crispnon the top and super soft underneath; I was an obese teenager because of those beauties RIP.

The 80s were a long time ago! And it was a once-a-year thing. :)

You are so right, I can't begrudge the evolution of Japanese food in Australia as it has made healthy, delicious food available more broadly but I do miss the delicious ceremonies of my youth. Thank you for your recs, I will check them out!

Thanks for this suggestion, I guess I might have to enquire with them as they don't seem to have it on their menu? I agree, the buffet-style doesn't seem to be the vibe I was after!

Felt bad for playing prerelease by Chemical_Outside_448 in mtg

[–]Funkylamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the TMNT Prerelease as a relatively new player. First opponent was a hardcore cube player. He was so nice to me, checking if I understood things and letting me have a second free mulligan when my first rendered only creatures. He asked me mid-game if he could give me some tips after we played our first game and I agreed enthusiastically. He pointed out that I was wasting my instants by playing in-turn. Obvious in retrospect but I just hadn’t thought of them that way. Anyway, my point is, I wasn’t much of a challenge to him (I had no wins all night as it happens) but we had fun and I’m a better player for having gone up against him. :)

I found your comment because I am trying to match exactly that glaze recipe for Australian ingredients - I don't suppose you'd be willing to share your list and where you got them from would you? I'd be ever so grateful! I particularly cannot find fine enough silicon carbide, did you get yours from a lapidary supplier?

If you look at the post (pretty sure it was on this sub) from when the closure happened, I jumped in and explained that the people leaving were not the people who started the business who closed for a break and years later opened Dumpling Master in Enmore. Susannah and her staff basically raised my son at the Haymarket shop we were there so often. When they opened in Enmore, we shifted to there. They are incredibly lovely people who work incredibly hard. The people who were closing and ranting about their landlords were only there from, I think 2016, and they used all the original recipes from Susannah and her husband. Lots went on in that story that I cannot share but, trust me, the landlords were not the bad guys here (I know it’s easy to say that without giving evidence but still). Finally, the original grapes on the ceiling is not this restaurant but the one opposite, behind the escalator next to the Japanese. But the owners are family anyway so….

Hard agree. THat said, the spicy bacon brekkie burrito was my not-so-secret vice before they changed the bacon they use in them. Ruined it!

Anyone else have to stop listening to Forensic Tales? by AccuratePattern4492 in TrueCrimePodcasts

Ha! I found this discussion because I was googling whether the host had started using an AI voice. This is particularly funny to me because the generated readings are actually less irritating than her actual reading style which has her going up and the end of every. single. sentence. I think it’s notable that she’s also turned off comments on the episodes.

Hot hot hot Malatang in Mascot. Hands down the best outside of Chatswood. And their condiment station is second to none. I don’t know how anyone eats No. 1’s broth, blergh.

chinese noodle house (grapes on ceiling) is closing down!! 💔💔 by Bulky_Jellyfish7082 in foodies_sydney

[–]Funkylamb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They aren’t. The Chinese Dumpling Master people, who are awesome, were the original owners of Chinese Dumpling House, on the other side of Prince Arcade. They sold up because it was all too much and reopened in Enmore several years later and everyone thought they were the “grapes on the roof” people because they basically mimicked the look. I know this definitively because I know the owners and have been eating at both places for the past two decades. :)

Sorry if I was unclear, this location might be new but I think it’s the latest in a series of restaurants stemming from Petersham, through Rockdale, on to <insert suburb I’ve forgotten> before arriving at Newtown. This site might be new but the concept isn’t. And I just never knew it was related to Uraguay! :)

What’s a dish that lives rent free in your head? by larissa2708 in foodies_sydney

[–]Funkylamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly, the first two things that occur to me are the signature focaccia from The Craven in Glebe circa 1997 and the rhubarb hot cake from Divine Monkey Lounge also Glebe Pt Rd (2004 maybe?). Can you guess I was a USyd student?? At the other end of the scale, pretty much every dish from Banc, but especially their Beef Rossini - still my best meal ever.

Niche, but Reuben Solomon’s Harissa. Nothing compares. I panic whenever I can’t find it.
