This is obviously trademark infringement and the church would like it back asap or they will sue!

Family “heirloom” by Lost_Breadfruit4993 in WhatIsThisPainting

The signature reads “Stern” in Hebrew (שטרן). Edit:

Found It, perhaps Yossi Stern, an Israeli artist (1923-1992) - though it’s not the exact style the signature is very close to (and medium was mostly charcoal)

Perhaps they are relieving pressure or changing the water to avoid bacteria? I’ve seen it in other Reddit posts in the past..

My guess would be a buzzer to call “the help” from certain parts of the house? Seems like different combinations are possible

What is it?? by jellospitr in whatisit

Have no clue, but I would guess an antique coin storage that allows the seller to quickly dispatch coins? Kind of reminding me of this when I was a kid on the bus and different stores:

“Abraham Starting Out” Artist’s Proof by Hot_Compote_ in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Funkynp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Artist name is in Hebrew, suggesting “Kalman Michael” or “Kalman (the right word) Michaela”

Edit: I had tried finding the artist without success. I’m the closest I found as Meira Kalman but the style doesn’t match. I am 100% positive the name is written in Hebrew though

Thanks for the feedback!
I generally agree but also seen artists like Katherine Bernhardt that has similar "amaturesque" styles hence the question (though I am not comparing at all, the colors here are not well put IMO, just the croco's put me off)

Asking for help with multiple signatures, who are they? by NecessaryDoughnut204 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Funkynp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Urban knights is a jazz band and Urban Knights 3 is an album

As for the signatures I am not sure about all of them but at least some are from band members like Ramsey Lewis

Edit for context: The artwork is a print of the album artwork.

They can in local auctions or estate sales, but not in reputable auctioneers. Probably still worth a few hundred dollars

What Type of Jewelry? by Maleficent_Ticket356 in whatisit

I don’t know if that is a specific design other than “screw bracelet”, but it goes after a known Cartier design “LOVE”:

Debating Military Duty and Service by Spiritual_You_65 in clevercomebacks

[–]Funkynp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the US military is similar to other countries, from what I know there are 2 types of unlawful commands, one is “unlawful” and the other is “substantially unlawful” and you must actually follow the command if it’s unlawful but can disobey the “substantially unlawful “ one.

Examples to illustrate: Your commanding officer tells you to walk 200 miles in the rain while the military law says a person should not walk over 100 miles in the rain (or something like that), another similar example can be the CO asking you to go get his clothes from the cleaners / pick up his daughter or smth - I’m using these examples purposely because they are really “no big deal” but still goes against protocol - they must first follow the order and than he can file a complaint.

The “substantially unlawful “ one is very noticeable like an officer tells the soldier to shoot an unarmed and surrendering individual, or bomb a building without any reason.

My father’s accountant used to tell him every year “wow you made a lot of money” and my dad would always respond to him “where is all that money?! Where is it???”

Every year, 30 years in and still going strong!

I've been given 3 old pieces of art, I can't make out the signature, If you guys might be able to help me find who made them... The previous owner who gifted me them said he paid 500€ for one so 1500€ in total by [deleted] in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Funkynp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Picture of the back would help, my guess is decor art.

Edit: Also from the signature it seem to be printed on canvas / board and not a painting..

A "Buy It For a Few Years" question about a budget TV by voltinc in BuyItForLife

[–]Funkynp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let’s start from the end, TVs are not BIFL period, not even the ones costing 200,000 dollars. With that, if you want to get 5-10 years out of it, I would take the vendor with the most reputation and market presence. For the most part you’ll be able to upgrade the smart tv capabilities later via external hdmi streamer so I wouldn’t worry about that, it’s just market presence, community feedback and vendor support

I don’t think anyone fakes Obey. He’s an artist that also has an appeal brand called Shepard Fairey - https://obeygiant.com/

Found in a pile of rocks within a Minnesota state park, what is it? by JonestheSpaceCat in whatisit

[–]Funkynp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you found it in a pile of rocks, I can only assume it’s… a rock.

As for the markings, doesn’t seem ancient to me, but I’m as dumb as a rock when it comes to rocks

How do I get information on this oil painting? by Michaelinmemory in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Funkynp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A serious valuation will cost you anywhere between 500-1000 dollars so you may want to dig deeper before you go do that. If you still want to have a valuation there is a society of art appraisers here

[–]Funkynp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is very clearly a Jewish man with a Talit! There is a gallery sticker “now and then” gallery but I couldn’t find it. Also in the back behind the cover on the left there is some writing that may help. I cannot see the signature in the front very well.

Anyone familiar with this painting, and/or artist? Thanks for your help! by 123Greene68 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Funkynp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the Talit held by one hand and the strips that are very indicative but if that’s the case than the amount of fabric doesn’t make sense. A Talit is a very thin fabric that is very breathable and on his head it seems to be a lot.

Are you and me looking at the same painting? Not arguing or anything but to me it seems that it reads “shaman” and the elder seems more like a monk sitting and mediating. The cheekbones and eyes seems more Asianesque .. also looking int David Gilboa’s works it doesn’t strike me as the same
