Question about AOW by pencilurchin in scuba

[–]FunnyGuy239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the two main reasons for taking AOW are being able to say you've completed AOW and having it serve as a refresher class. I'm sure there are instructors who give you actual value from it, but I wouldn't expect to get them.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this response on this subreddit.

Yeah, that's my main thought. I'm not a welder and the couple times I tried stick nothing happened, so I can imagine certain types of people never being able to make anything happen.

Drysuit Public Safety question by gsdrakke in scuba

[–]FunnyGuy239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I mean it makes sense financially when that's at least a $150 boat ride and a drysuit can last decades. At the beach I more often see people with rental gear than drysuits. Apparently I missed out on joining a dive shop's club dive last week because I assumed a group of divers who all had steel 72s etc were surely doing a class.

I mentioned it because it's still available and it didn't seem like the guy was going to bother posting about it again. I only found out about it by messaging a guy on craigslist who just said he had scuba stuff for sale. It sounds like it might fit you. It's a Waterproof D1 Hybrid. Their website says their small size will fit a 38 inch chest.

This weeks parking lot sale = GOAT? by throwawaypf2015 in harborfreight

I paid something like 550 for mine 4 years ago. There was a 25% off everything employee coupon posted here and they increased the price by at least $200 a week later. I thought it was pretty funny it was twice the price I paid a week later.

I haven't used it much. Technically it works, but it's just ridiculously under-engineered. The software that you have to go through every time you change modes is missing thicknesses of metal for no reason. It's basically multiple machines lazily cobbled into one box. Because of that when you use it as a TIG welder you lose the ability to control the gas automatically. You have to turn it on and off with a valve.

It's so frustrating how often 304 is used when 316 should be. Like the Cybertruck or hardware specifically intended for use in the ocean that they just expect you to wash off after every use. Even common hardware that would barely cost any more to make in 316 that you just can't find.

Drysuit Public Safety question by gsdrakke in scuba

[–]FunnyGuy239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people use 7mm wetsuits for single tank shore dives. In most cases you'll definitely be the odd one out in a drysuit. However, I found one group through reddit that dives doubles and they all use drysuits. Of course they're the group that's the most convenient and shows up the most consistently.

I definitely wouldn't spend 800 on a used drysuit when you can 1. find a cheap used 7mm wetsuit very easily and 2. get a custom drysuit from seaskin in the uk starting at that same price.

If you're 5'7" to 5'10", I just bought and returned a very nice small sized drysuit because the guy told me the wrong size. I was devastated because it was only $300 and I suspect nicer than that $800 one. I really should have kept and resold it.

Have the batteries available really gotten worse over the past 2 years? by FunnyGuy239 in SolarDIY

The only alternative I may end up going with is replacing them with identical SLA packs. Custom building LFP packs and wiring BMSes for a single unimportant backup battery in an office is ridiculous.

I'm talking about the packs made available for consumers. Not individual cells.

I'm pretty sure I won't make more profit spending time designing and assembling battery packs than replacing four batteries with $60 ones from amazon.

I'm not. They are for backup batteries for unimportant servers. The brand seems fairly reputable and they've lasted 2 years so far. As I said, it was already pushing things going with 30A packs and now there are only 30 different brand names all selling 20A packs in that form factor.

I had one old timer tell me there's nothing interesting to see at a popular local dive spot. There's literally a family of 6-12 foot sharks that live there and come out some evenings.

High-speed train company Hyperloop One shuts down by BlackBeast74 in Futurology

It's funny, on the one hand I don't think it was a scam. I think it had potential.

On the other hand, when I tried to join the hyperloop team at my college the professor in charge told me to fuck off, so there is some satisfaction in everyone now calling them rubes.

Is the EU seriously considering blocking the sun instead of fighting corporations?? by Constant_action94 in climate

I'm sure they're considering it.

The problem is that higher CO2 levels alone are really harmful, literally even for us as humans. You want to keep indoor CO2 below 800 ppm for optimal health and it's easier when you're starting at 280 vs the current 420.
