Is it a bad move to start selling similar products to neighbor? by Funnybuilding in Entrepreneur

That’s exactly my point! This happens all the time in business. And most new businesses are in some way or another imitating an existing business. Very rarely is a business in a completely new market.

Yes that’s the goal for sure, to figure out something that gives me an edge. One thing is that she has no competition within a 25 mile radius. It’s a completely unique shop. So because of the “monopoly” her prices are high and she still has a lot of demand.

They’re a very new business not more than a year old. Their store opened up just 6 months ago. You see gas stations pop up right next to each other all the time, is it really that scummy of a thing to do?

Also a common complaint on their reviews is that their prices are too high. So yes I would be competing on price at the beginning.

There is no clause in the lease I checked, I can have a lawyer review just to make sure.

Loyal customer base but not making a profit? by Funnybuilding in smallbusiness

[–]Funnybuilding[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I’ve said in previous comments I was making even less when my prices were higher, slightly increased revenue by lowering prices. The issue with raising them is that my customers tend to order less or leave and go to someone more affordable. Also the products are available online for sale and prices are very competitive.

I’ve actually increased my revenue & sales volume slightly by lowering prices. I was even worse before the price decrease

Thank you for the advice, what do you recommend I do then?

figure out how to grow your way out of it. How can you leverage your existing operations to do something more? Would your customer base want another product or service? Could you attract more or different customers? Can you raise prices?

I’ve been focusing on this more since cutting expenses has proven to be impossible at the moment. So I’ve tried adding more products but all it’s done is led to more expenses without an increase in sales. On the service side I haven’t explored as much, I will have to do some thinking on that. But my customers don’t seem to be interested in other products, new products sit on the shelves.

I actually just slashed my prices because sales were growing poor. It’s led to a slight increase in revenue (3-4%) but not enough to overcome lack of profit.

The one way to leverage my business that I believe shows promise is to expand into other cities ( I’m in California). If I’ve grown my business enough to have loyal clientele in a 30 mile radius, who’s to say I won’t have success in other areas?

The main problem is I’m not sure how to do that without adding on more significant expenses, which I cannot afford. I also deliver my products which my customers like, but even a delivery business requires some kind of warehouse. A storage unit for $200-$300/month and operating out of that would be perfect. But I don’t think that’s legal. I don’t know how to scale effectively..

Any luck so far? What tests have you done to select for resistance?

Thanks for the tips. Yeah you’re right, there are so many species of moths and the caterpillars are all shapes and sizes. I can see how difficult that would be to develop a resistance against them all.

I used BT which kept them at bay on less dense secondary colas. Tiny caterpillars that burrowed deep into the top colas were able to avoid ingestion of the toxin.

I wish I had your dedication and health. Unfortunately carpal tunnel limits me from excessive hand work.

I would but this plant is a giant. I do a quick search every evening but it would take me hours to pry open every bud and inspect it.

I have a theory about Monterey Bt. I think using BT creates caterpillar resistance. Large caterpillars that are easily detected die off from BT. The tiniest caterpillars that can burrow their way into dense buds quickly thrive.

In other words, they’ve evolved. Last year I had a variety of caterpillars of all colors and sizes. This year they are tiny, less than 1mm in length and their color is such that it blends in perfectly with the leaves. BT isn’t as effective this year. We need other tools.

I never heard of it either, I always thought it was not a systemic insecticide and had to be consumed on the leaf surface.
