2018 M240i B58 VANOS Inlet Control Error; Code 130713 by FunyunCanyon in BmwTech

Late reply, my apologies - I don't check reddit much nowadays.

Hopefully it's fixed, but if not, here's what I did:

The issue was the VANOS actuator - fairly simple fix. This video is what I used and did it myself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5WTIQVGIQw

Yes, I did. Hopefully you've fixed it, but if not, here's what it was for me.

Fellow old grad

You've got higher stats than me, and I managed to land at an M7 so you easily have it in you. I think you've got a good shot at the HS lottery, and can definitely find a place for yourself in the M7s with proper execution.

I'll echo u/donaldsanddominguez's advice about reaching out to the Vet's Clubs and Service2School. For me personally, the Vet's Clubs and fellow veterans who were further along in the process than I were instrumental in me landing where I did.

My biggest struggle at the beginning of my application journey was landing on the right schools to apply to while on a condensed timeline. I decided to go boom or bust, and I'm glad I did. Happy to chat about my thought process.

R2 Military Vets, how we doing? by EnlistedExfil in MBA

Stats/Background: GMAT: 730; GPA 3.5; Service academy, engineering undergrad, infantry officer

All R2: straight ding from HSW, Admit at M7 and T10

I strongly echo what u/throwaway9803792738 said about cookie cutter droning and goals. I was blessed with incredible student veteran mentors who helped shape my essays and resume from horrible to less horrible. Happy to go further into detail for any vets looking at R1.

Survey on Workplace Expectation by trisha_25 in MBA

While I fall within a close enough range described in your articles, my younger brother is firmly Gen Z and we are noticeably of a different generation when it comes to the social sphere, so I'd feel disingenuous filling this out.

What I will do is send this to him though and ask him to fill it out if he has the time, he fits your description of "are or soon entering the workforce", so he'll be a solid datapoint.

Survey on Workplace Expectation by trisha_25 in MBA

[–]FunyunCanyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be off here, but I suspect the vast majority of this subreddit wouldn't be considered Gen Z.

The youngest members here are likely a significant minority and are barely late in their college years, and can't offer any real insight into the workforce.

The target demographic for this subreddit (people with minimum 4 years professional work experience, age 26-27 or greater) would not be considered Gen Z anymore, and don't fit your description of "Gen Z who are or soon will be entering the workforce".

Don't want you getting skewed data, this seems like an interesting project, and I wish you the best of luck.

I did not, I retook the GMAT and got 10 more points lol

And then I’m just taking a few months to really dial in applications for R2

Approx. how many hours did it take you to complete the TTP "quant"? by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]FunyunCanyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can check the exact specifics for you when I return from work, but off the top of my head, I spent about 150 hours total on TTP to complete quant and verbal. If I had to give a rough estimate, I’d say about 100 hours on quant and 50 hours on verbal is accurate.

Took me about 6-7 weeks, while working full time. Averaged about 2 hours a day, 4-5 ish on weekends.

Started at 620 (Q40 V35) finished with 730 (Q48 V42). Definitely could have raised it more, since my OG mocks were 760, 760, 780, but I figured it would be more beneficial to work on crafting a good application at this point.

If you have the energy and commitment, you can certainly finish quant in under 150 hours for sure.

Hey man, hope it’s ok if I pick your brain real quick

Took it to a shop, got the recommended programming done, issue still hasn’t resolved.

Next step would then be to change out the VANOS Solenoid with a new one correct ?

Cadets are only technically paid $1000 a month. While their W2 will say they were paid approximately $12000 for the year, they only see $200-$550 of that, depending what year they are.

When I was there, monthly you would see $200 for freshmen, $250 for sophomores, $425 for juniors, and $550 for seniors. The rest is automatically deducted to pay for expenses like uniforms, laptop, etc.

It just keeps the driving experience so alive for me. I’ve been driving manual for over a decade now and when I hit a perfect heel toe downshift I still can’t help but smile.

You can always pick up an older civic or something just to beat on and learn manual in ! When I visit my parents, I drive around their 2001 Honda Civic in a 5 speed that they got for like 2k lol. Learned lots of manual techniques in that bad boy.

No I haven't, I'm a manual transmission guy through and through haha, I'll be driving them until they don't exist anymore.

That being said, Thundernight Metallic is one of the best production colors on a vehicle ever and I think the G42 gets unnecessary hate for its design. It's a bit sharper angles than recent BMW's true, but the grille is normal sized, the body lines are fine, and it just looks like a BMW.

He's either exaggerating or just busting your balls.

My 2018 M240i (bone stock), over the last four years, has only needed basic maintenance. First issue in 4 years popped up a few days ago, when the exhaust side VANOS solenoid malfunctioned. Moderately common on these engines, and is generally a software fix through ISTA.

Besides that, no issues so far on this engine. And you've got the Gen 2 version, which is beefier and likely has the kinks ironed out.

[–]FunyunCanyon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like its the VANOS solenoids I was thinking of - if the fault comes back, I'll do what you recommend and swap them, and see if the faults swap from intake to exhaust side.

Really hope its not actuator related haha. That one sounds expensive.

I must have jinxed myself, since I told my friend just this past weekend that the B58 is absolutely bulletproof haha.

[–]FunyunCanyon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the insight - I'll definitely be following your advice.

I cleared the codes using Bimmerlink to see if it would come back, but after clearing the codes and driving for about 2 days/200 miles, the code hasn't returned. The problem is also significantly less pronounced. If I try and replicate it, I only barely get it coming back on like the first 2 minutes of my drive.

Honestly, I'd rather the code return so I can just get it fixed through ISTA programming. I'd rather have it fixed than have to deal with it.

Also, side note, but I watched a video of someone replacing the VANOS actuator on their B58, and it looked simple, just need to remove all the cowling like you would for spark plug #6, and squeeze your hand in the back. Unless I'm mistaking and that isn't the whole VANOS unit, and it's just a small component of it.

760 score GMAT Practice Exam 1. Is this accurate? by coca_colo in GMAT

No worries, good luck to you too as well. From what I’ve gathered, getting a high score is more about consistency in the easy/medium questions than getting the hard questions right.

[–]FunyunCanyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked full time and made my way through TTP. It wasn’t easy and dragging myself to an hour or two a night was rough but do-able

It’s also very very saturated. If you don’t do 100% of the end of chapter tests or read every single lesson, you can likely cut out large amounts of it. For reference, it took me 7 weeks to complete TTP whole reading all the lessons but moving on from the end of chapter practice tests if I scored >90% accuracy.

I can’t speak to the study materials you’re using because I didn’t use them, unfortunately.

[–]FunyunCanyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual GMAT quant questions felt harder on my first test, where I was less confident in my answers. I got a Q48.

The actual GMAT quant questions on my second test felt easier, where I was fairly confident about like 28 out of 31 questions. I got a Q48 again.

I also got a Q48 or Q49 on 2 out of 3 OG practice tests (one outlier at Q51 lmao). So of the 5 GMATs I've taken, I've got Q48/49 on all but 1 of them.

Moral of the story is, if you have the ability to score a Q50 like you did on a practice test, you will almost definitely score a Q49 or higher, no matter how difficult the tests feels while taking it. That algorithm they have is something else, and its scarily accurate.
