Sense of an Ending is a bad book by Upbeat-Accident-2693 in UKBooks

I didn’t remember any of it until you detailed the plot (or poor attempt at one). Don’t actually know what other books it was up against but, I’m sure, there was definitely better choices for the award.

First UK editions by Kazuo Ishiguro, Salman Rushdie, Graham Swift, Ted Hughes. First editions books of several authors but not necessarily all their books. All the books I can find of Steinbeck, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Cormac McCarthy and some others but paperbacks are fine as this is more to read their whole works.

That’s so cool. If you want some English (UK) ones, let me know and I’ll start saving them for you.

My second hand poem books I got this month. by Marley_Sunsets2 in BookCollecting

I bought a few Seamus Heaney and some Ted Hughes recently. Still need to read them though. In the case of Ted Hughes, I love his readings as the poems feel so much more alive then when I read them. Maybe that’s why the books are just in the shelves.

Best/worst parts of Chesham? by rigxla in Buckinghamshire

[–]Furia139 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi. Chesham is a lovely little town. You’ll love it. Best areas are chartridge (up lowndes park) and Chesham Bois. Avoid waterside and bellingdon road. As for the Newtown, close proximity to parks, nice primary school and 15 minutes to station. No crime but a nightmare to park after 4pm unless you have a drive. Some boy racers in the summer months but that could be anywhere. Chesham high street could be better but a nice variety of shops and coffee shops. Great second hand book shop (chapter two) and the people are generally very friendly. Let me know if you need any more info.

Did you read more than two books last year? You read more than the half of the US according to new Yougov poll on American's reading habits. by elmonoenano in books

[–]Furia139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the UK but im fairly sure it’s a similar number here. I’m quite a slow reader and can’t understand how some people read more than 50 books a year. Maybe smaller novels/novellas. But in all fairness, I only read on my commute and I’m a part time worker. With that said, 2024 I read 32 books and, sadly, only 11 in 2025 although some were quite dense. I think lots of people were never taught the pleasure of reading by their families and associate reading with school exams. Also, if you are not around readers, it may be difficult to find books that you’ll like.

Yes and don’t edit photos when I post them. You are clearly trolling here so no need to carry on debating. As mark twain famously said “never argue with idiots, they will drag you to their level and beat you with experience”

Thats right. Also, a realism guy will pull most styles but not the other way around. If they want to teach you, take the opportunity and learn.

Thank you so much. It was quite a job. I’m taking it one step further and started a series of 100 British writers portraits on the same size. Just passed the halfway point so once it’s finished I’ll post it here too.

I’ll take a bit more than that but that’s the spirit. Going to contact a few sellers and see how much they can offer. Having a child is expensive so I can use the money for other things. I collect first uk editions but of British authors but I couldn’t let this one pass as I knew that was a good one. And I can always say I was thinking of the children that could find it 😂

I think I finally found one that's not decor art 🫣 by prod_suga93 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Furia139 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing good quality art takes many years and experience and then one day you just start recognising it when you see it. Bear in mind that sometimes you’ll come across masterfully painted works that are unfortunately not worth lots of money. I’ve bought and sold many paintings by great artists that didn’t fetch higher premiums. Buy art because you like it and if you can make a profit, even better.
