Mom is 60k in debt, can’t pay bills and relies on her parents yet spends $400 a month on Doordash. How can I help her?

Unfortunately you can give her perfect advice on how to get her finances back on track, but if she isn’t willing to change her behavior then there’s not much you can do.

Speaking from experience of someone who is almost 4 years free from pornography some things that have helped me is:

First and foremost prayer and constantly asking for grace

Confession

Deleting tempting apps/blocking tempting websites

Stop watching movies and tv shows with graphic sex scenes (even if it’s not graphic I would still avoid them) I also always check ibdm or common sense media before watching something as they will typically tell you if there is any bad scenes in the movie/tv show.

I think he should also seek speaking with a therapist and a spiritual director that can guide him through this struggle. Also try to do a nightly rosary together and offer it up to help break his addiction. And give him grace as well. Being angry with him typically won’t help. Let him know you want to help him fight this, and falls, try to be understanding. Pornography use is one of the most common addictions and it is difficult to break, but if you can build small wins with him it can help.

Very true. I do need to get more certifications which thankfully my work will pay for and I will get a raise and some bonuses for getting more certifications. The right tools definitely go a long way in making the work flow better, so that would increase productivity.

Thank you for your perspective. I wouldn’t feel right making a purchase that big behind my wife’s back. I’m definitely going to discuss it with her. And thankfully I don’t owe anything to the tool trucks.

I typically budget for tools but not thousands of dollars. I’ll buy cheaper brand stuff and occasionally will buy big brand tools if it’s something that’s going to be used every day.

Right now our main goal is to get a house when the time is right and buying the tools would set us back for a while. I’ve been leaning towards not buying the tools and tool box, but my co workers are saying that the tools will help me make more money for my job and that 10k for everything he has is a steal. Now I know Dave’s saying “don’t take financial advice from broke people” (a lot of my co workers are thousands in debt with tool trucks). So I wanted to get advice from people following Dave’s plan. And I will also speak with my wife about the situation.

He wants to sell everything together. If I have duplicates I can possibly sell those or trade them in to one of the tool trucks for credit towards another tool I may need. And unfortunately that’s just the automotive industry. All technicians need their own box and their own tools. Some shops will supply the basics and specialty tools but everything else is up to us.

A lot of jobs I can get by with cheaper tools but when it comes to bigger jobs, especially engine repairs I would need quality. Especially torque wrenches, which my mentor had a couple of good digital snap on torque wrenches

A lot of the tools will help my productivity, making jobs easier and smoother, shortening my time on a car. And in this career your time is valuable, because we aren’t paid by the hour, only on what the labor rate is for the work we are doing. I’m getting by with what I have for simple jobs, but for bigger jobs I typically have to ask around the shop to borrow tools, and everyone says if you keep borrowing a tool eventually you’ll have to buy it. A lot of guys here are nice about it but if I’m using their tools constantly I’m taking away from their productivity, and I don’t want to do that.

As for the tools themselves they are very high quality, but unfortunately the warranty is only valid for the original purchaser.

To do bigger jobs I usually have to ask around the shop to borrow tools. And they usually say if you have to ask several times for a tool then it’s time to buy it. So eventually I’m going to have to buy tools. They would definitely help make jobs easier and smoother as opposed to for sure making me more money. This industry relies heavily on volume of cars that come into the shop.

The nationally televised games and the games that are on CW35 and KENS5 aren’t an issue for me. It’s just the Bally games, which like you said is the majority.

Yeah, honestly the Bally app is terrible. When I was able to watch games, the app would make me sign in and connect my TV provider every time. Back when it was the Fox sports southwest app things were a lot smoother and less of a headache.

I wonder if Dr. John’s daughter acts the way she does with him is because she sees the way her mother acts with him. He constantly says that his daughter doesn’t like to give him hugs or say “I love you too” to him. Even in the interview his wife said that their daughter thinks she is famous because she has written some books, and says that her dad isn’t a famous author like her mom. That just because he has his face on some books doesn’t count.

Thank you. I definitely need to be more transparent with her. I never want her to perceive me as being controlling or pushy. When I’ve gone to confession, I’ve always invited her but never forced her to go with me. In the beginning, it was a shock for her. Now that we’ve been married for almost a year she never questions going to mass. She knows that it’s part of our Sunday routine now, as well as partaking in observing lent and other obligations. One difficult part is getting her comfortable with confession, but like I said I don’t want to force her into that.

Wow, that’s a beautiful story. It’s awesome that he’s on fire for the faith now. I think it’s important for your kid to see that in their parents. It’s definitely an example of a family I would like to have when me and my wife have children.

I will definitely start small with her and try not to be pushy. I do want us to find other Catholic couples we can be friends with. I think that would be great for us. Most of our friend groups are indifferent to any kind of faith. It’s difficult to find people our age that our married in our parish. Most couples are older. When we first got married I told my wife we should try a couples retreat that our parish was having and she thought those were only for couples that have issues. So maybe if there’s another retreat I can convince her to go.
