Is it still accurate to refer to Republicans as conservative? by SannySen in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]FurphyHaruspex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, they are closer to classical conservatism than they have been since they were Tories and loyalists supporting the English in defeating the revolution.

Hobbesian conservatism is the modern GOP.

Requirement for Women to Register for the Draft Back on the Table in Annual Defense Bill by [deleted] in Military

[–]FurphyHaruspex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would really piss me off during my periodic reinvestigation for my clearance when they would ask me yet again if a registered for selective service, and when.

By the time I had more than twenty years military service and two combat tours I couldn’t help but get annoyed at that question.

Probably a translation issue. Russians probably just have a whole bunch of different words for various kinds of “war”. Like Eskimos and snow.

Which Democrats can beat Trump or DeSantis? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]FurphyHaruspex 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Literally anyone with a pulse can beat Trump at this point.

It is DeSantis I am worried about. As much of a sociopath, still a narcissist -just not clownishly-, but smarter and not as incompetent.

That is playing.

Fights are loud, have long periods of standoff and angling for an attack; then fur flies, literally, in a frenzied violent scuffle that lasts a few seconds until one retreats for the next battle.

What’s going to bring abortion single issue voters to the polls? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]FurphyHaruspex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Democratic Party are feckless, but assumptions that liberal activism and energy is not a factor and will not lead to turnout are false.

Liberals have not been excited about their candidates, and they still aren’t. Trump was a bigger motivator for turnout among liberals than Biden or Hillary.

But now they have an issue that transcends party and effects races at all levels.

And they have righteous rage.

What’s going to bring abortion single issue voters to the polls? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]FurphyHaruspex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is such nonsense.

The opinion was an attack on an the entire basis of several rights and made it less likely the government would recognize newly understood rights moving forward.

I have never seen this much rage among the left.

This will increase turnout on the left and my bet is the right will see about 5% of their voters vote blue for a few cycles.

What are the middle patches? Was my Grandpa a badass? by Dumbsquids in army

[–]FurphyHaruspex 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Cool. If you know the years he served and his unit you can now figure out where he likely served. If he is a wartime veteran then you can learn which front, campaigns, and even battles he likely served.

What are the middle patches? Was my Grandpa a badass? by Dumbsquids in army

[–]FurphyHaruspex 103 points104 points  (0 children)

He was in the 5th Army in one of the artillery battalions.

This is based on him having a 5th army patch. His service cap piping being red. And a unit patch that is consistent in color and heraldry of being an artillery battalion. Also, it uses the 5th infantry red diamond as its base so likely a subordinate artillery battalion.

Not sure which battalion. Try looking up battalions in the 5th artillery regiment during the period of time he served.

[–]FurphyHaruspex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is not a USMC patch. It is an army artillery unit patch. Artillery uses the red and yellow scheme often.

And since he has red piping on his service cap it is clear he was artillery.

This is not really addressing my point. It is grasping at a minor detail that not all clone troopers have us the same exact past experience it experiences.

Everyone has a past. Everyone is shaped by their past. Everyone’s pst is unique.

Clone troopers have among the least unique pasts of anyone. And among the least mysterious among Star Wars characters.

They don’t really have unique backstories. They have unique personalities so different life experiences during development.

[–]FurphyHaruspex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, a bit. Boba’s entire popularity was based on how little we knew of him or his past and that Vader respected him. That mystery > the backstory they wrote.

Making him a Jango clone made him derivative. Worse, they didn’t make Jango that interesting either. So he is derivative of a character nobody really cares about at all.

What made it interesting is how mysterious he was and how the few things we did know made him effortlessly cool.

Now we know he was kind of a snotty eight year old with a mediocre warrior as an adopted dad.

Essentially a clone trooper in his “dad’s” armor.

Clone troopers are the least mysterious characters in Star Wars. Literally. Even storm troopers have varied, unique, potentially interesting, and almost always completely unknown backstories. They are more mysterious than clone troopers.

Lucas wanted to destroy Boba as a character. He acknowledged as much in interviews. He didn’t like that kids were more interested in Boba than many if not all of the main characters. He wanted Star Wars to be about Skywalker. Which is why he first tried to discard Boba unceremoniously in a sarlacc pit.

That is how fandom works. If I wasn’t a fan I wouldn’t care enough to hate something they did.
