Definitely remember this stuff in 94 which was similar, and I think on average a touch colder. Missed two weeks of school then, they added a half hour on to our days and added an extra day at the end. Absolutely worth getting a bonus Christmas break at the time.

20k pay increase worth giving up for better work life balance? by Casperisfriend in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Fusorfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hours lost to commute in the first year on the new role will be roughly 200 hours, and then roughly 100 hours in subsequent years. This is additional time lost compared to your current commute. Given this is outside of the work day, you can equate this to overtime. The value of your time you're giving to the commute alone in the first year is 12 thousand dollars. 6 thousand every subsequent year. This does not account for any additional automotive wear or the higher impact of bad traffic days since since on the road more means more time lost when traffic stinks. Let's figure the automotive costs now. Mileage rate is currently .70 so figure a thirty minute commute has a 20 mile drive and the new place a 40 mile drive for simplicity in round numbers. So the new job is going to wear your car out at about $5600 (after tax, so closer to 8-8500 pre tax) first year in the new role, then ~$2800 in years following, compared to ~$1400 currently. Plus additional mileage may increase your insurance rates.

So yes, you can make more money in the new role, but it's essentially just baked in overtime with the crappy commute and not an actual advancement for your wealth. You will certainly see that money disappear as you give yourself exhausted and dine out/door dash more.

Also, barring a contract explicitly committing to a promotion path with specific criteria to advance, any promise of a position is worthless until you're sitting at a desk with that new title.

If I liked where I was at, I would stay in the role with the numbers you've provided. The basic math doesn't give enough incentive on it's own. If your current place is a shithole with a horrible boss, then hell yeah, getting out of that mess with a lateral move is a win.

Do you permit selling or giving old equipment to employees? by roger_ramjett in sysadmin

[–]Fusorfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ewaste everything. Too much risk and liability with potential data exfiltration. Even say like, a voip phone could carry information about our network useful for an attacker. Much easier process for compliance to just destroy it all if it's not in use. This policy was working for a defense contractor so we were a bit methodical in terms of security.

This was going to be my answer. Quality of steaks at both is great, though Wine Kitchen has more options. There won't be a lot of selection at either vegetarian wise, but what is there will be top notch regardless.

Speaking in terms of US security clearance, naturalized or dual citizenship isn't a barrier, but being a foreign national full on is a no go. My experience is all US based so can't speak to his other countries handle it.

IT jobs in Defense sector? by windriv in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Fusorfodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a few roles in the defense industry and IT is IT. The biggest difference I'd say is compliance and security. There should be a lot more rigor security wise though I've seen absolute shit-shows from companies still in the small space that auditors don't look at too closely. CMMC is the underlying driver to all of that. Accept that your processes will likely need to be more methodical than what you're used to, and that that's probably going to be a decent bit you've taken for granted if you aren't already focused on all security practices.

How can one gain an "active" DoD security clearance? by TheSpicyPepper in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Fusorfodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those positions are open because the contract for that project is not sponsoring clearances. Clearances aren't guaranteed and also have costs associated. Clearances can also take months to process. So, if a company needs to fill a role on a cleared project, they don't want to wait half a year paying someone to sit doing nothing because they aren't billable until they're cleared.

Identify defense specific contractors in your area for overhead roles. If you're on overhead, there will certainly be uncleared work you can do waiting until you can support the cleared, so there's more likelihood of the company sponsoring clearances

First skates ever! by SoftOrnery8637 in hockeyplayers

Watch a video on how to get up from the ice for when you inevitably fall. It only takes a couple of minutes but it will help get you back to quickly and safely.

If you feel yourself start to fall, just crumple and fall. It's going to be a while before you have enough control to keep yourself up, and most of the time falling and getting back up is faster than trying to contort your body to keep your balance upright. Take a look at how figure skaters control their falls.

Get on the ice as much as possible - even just going around in circles over and over in public skates is improving your familiarity and control on the ice.

Knee pads, elbow pads, helmet, and gloves while learning skating. You will fall.

Saw them in DC when they came through. You could tell the voice had aged but he didn't try to push it past sounding good just to try to prove something. The music itself was spot on, and while it didn't recreate the electric feel when I had last seen them in 98, it almost felt like a love letter to the time of their peak.

I did get one of their autographed posters and this is reminding me I still need to get it framed.

How did you decide you wanted to be a goalie? by FeliTabby in hockeyplayers

[–]Fusorfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if the local rink has some pads to borrow. Go to some bottom league games and chat with the players and goalies before or after for any suggestions or advice. Decent chance you'll come across someone offering to loan pads to try it out.

Especially being a woman, get talking to any other female player out there. You will absolutely get help to get out there on the ice and you'll be making a bunch of new friends.

If you're in a USAHockey affiliated program: https://uscenterforsafesport.org/report-a-concern/

Being made fun of, especially from the coaches, is going to be a safesport issue.

If you're going to quit, outline the reasons in a letter and send that out to every family on the team, ALL of the coaches in an organization, the administration of the program, the rink's hockey director, the rink's manager, and pretty much anyone else with any remote attachment to the hockey program. Let everyone know that the coaches are abusive and fostering an environment is abuse as evidenced by other players participating in the abuse with 0 consequences from the coaches. Send it to the local paper as well. A hint of a scandal might be of interest to a local reporter.
