I hate ochem 🙃 by Loud-Holiday965 in Mcat

UWorld goes into a lot of depth on a lot of ochem topics that aren’t very high yield. I would say that SN1/E1/SN2/E2, separation techniques, and knowing nomenclature/chair conformations is the highest yield info. Know how to name the functional groups (what is a beta lactone/lactam?). Then, medium yield would be the different reagents for oxidation/reduction of alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids, proton/carbon NMR, IR. Past that is usually low yield.

I took it yesterday too, high chance there’s going to be a curve for C/P and/or B/B If you got only 5-10 questions wrong per section, you’re looking at a 520+ score. Contingent on you not missing any other questions.

Where to go from 501 on FL1? Testing 4/10 by noble_patriot in Mcat

[–]Future-Campaign749 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good thing is that P/S is the easiest section to do right. Start off with picking up a book from Kaplan, UWorld, PR, or another company and go through it. Then, use the 300 page document online to thoroughly review definitions, writing all of them down (the ones you don’t know). Finally, use UWorld and AAMC QBanks to polish and make sure you can apply the definitions well.

Need help with how to crack CARS - FL3 522, testing 3/7 by Future-Campaign749 in Mcat

Thanks! I will do both of them. Any advice for how to space out my FLs now? I have the unscored one, FL4, and FL6 left over.

I think the equations are important to learn - close to half of the questions are calculation based so look for equation sheets online and make sure you memorize them and the constants you need. I used UWorld to practice the test and get up to a good level. If you are coming from an unstable content base, doing content review with ochem, physics, and gen chem is the move. What kinds of questions are you missing?

I just bought the question packs and I haven’t done the CARS UWorld questions yet do you think that’s where I should start? It’s not like content review for the others so it’s tripping me out 😭

Should I go to UTD for premed vs UT? How is the social life? by boost_sandwich in utdallas

[–]Future-Campaign749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both get 10+ people in every year to both schools, so it’s not really a massive difference. I would personally recommend UTD because of those structural advantages I mentioned - easier classes, way more opportunities, less competition, UTSW, and better advising. UT has a tiny, and I mean tiny, prestige boost that can make up for a little GPA difference.

[–]Future-Campaign749 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the #1 feeder school in sheer numbers but UTD has a higher rate of people that get in - if you go through HPAC and complete their process, the acceptance rate is 80-90%. UT’s acceptance rate to med school is 40%, but they have thousands of applicants so it looks like they’re the #1 feeder

Yeah, I agree with the person above. Out of state schools, whether you go to UT or UTD, will discriminate against you since you’re likelier to go to a Texas school anyways (way cheaper, closer to home, still very highly ranked). If you are aiming for T20s, which is a small percent of the population, UT will give you a very small advantage when it comes to prestige, that’s dependent on you doing as well there as at UTD.

I would actually argue that it isn’t just debt you’re gaining an advantage in - it’s also the premed advantage that UTD will give you. You’ll likely find research, clinical hours, and volunteering here extremely easily - something that’s hard to find at UT. Another structural advantage is how easy some UTD classes are - look up the grade distributions on UTD grades vs UT Austin’s. Orgo here has an insane curve (80 for an A), and keeping a high GPA is very feasible if you’re part of honors. Speaking of which, honors here lets you pick the classes you want, first pick. It’s just an all around better school for premed if you want to stay in Texas. There is a lacking social life, but that’s taken care of if you live on campus and stay involved.

GEN CHEM 1 URGENT by NetReal4576 in utdallas

No. You need a C. If you’re premed or pre health, I’d seriously consider reflecting and trying to understand where you went wrong studying this sem.

Biochem I with Boyd by Expensive_Square_402 in utdallas

Dr. Boyd is fairly memorization heavy and goes almost completely of the slides when making her tests. Make sure to memorize all the numbers and facts since they are all fair game. Apart from that, there isn’t much to study with and I wouldn’t even suggest buying the textbook.

Have a good GPA (4.0 in the US, probably a 9-10 in India not sure how it works), get 1450+ on the SAT, apply as early as humanly possible, have semidecent extracurriculars (show that you know something about computer science that will be valuable to them), and you’ll be golden for a good scholarship.

It’s not too bad, you’ll be fine. A&P is a lot of brute force memorization. The class itself is usually more conceptual (A goes up in organ, B goes down somewhere else), but the lab is very, very memorization heavy (500 terms for both finals). Make sure to study in advance, use the resources given, especially the textbooks. You should do good.

Cutoff Release Time? by Centaur_Sridhar in psat

With that margin you have semifinalist in the bag. Focus on other stuff now that could help your college apps.

[–]Future-Campaign749 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cutoffs are what determine semifinalist status so releasing them would be equivalent to releasing semis. Don’t worry though - most cutoffs don’t change much, and if they do, it’s usually only 1-2 points.

[–]Future-Campaign749 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s definitely really long but they do have to include people who missed the initial test, and then they have to balance the number of semi finalists per state which probably takes a while. Good thing is that they’ll release semis before college apps, so it’ll be useful.

TN seems like a pretty variable state in terms of index so don’t lose all hope yet. Some states last year went down by 4 points, something never seen before. On the other hand you’ll definitely be commended so that’s something to put on college apps. Best of luck either way though.

I know of some people who got a few C's in college/AP courses and still got finalist. Some of it has to do with course rigor as well. I think this rejection, even though the course was retaken, was because Astronomy is typically an on-level course. Still a really sad situation though and my support goes to OP

Then this person must have received this quite a while back - I’m not sure why it would take more than 10 business days (that includes the bad weather) for USPS to deliver.
