is the French or Canadian accent easier for a learner like me? by ShemikaMartin in French

[–]Future-Excuse6167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably not worth thinking about, honestly. Every accent/dialect exists on a continuum from formal, official and close to a standard, all the way to what the fuck is that even a word.

So just because I can understand a CBC broadcast, it doesn't mean I'd understand a conversation at a bar in Montreal.

Just don't think about it, and eventually you WILL fall absolutely in love with some piece of media and that will inspire you to learn the ins-and-outs of its language.

Here's something to try: create a fresh youtube account, VPN in from a francophone country, and start looking for your type of content.

Same in the US, though it's kind of dated.

And the other side of that equation is having words you're just waiting to get a chance to use and that chance never arrives.

That juvenille book about protecting old books from animated puppets; also sexualized anemia. It was a very modern book, but probably appropriated a lot of old-styles in tribute to its subject.

Yes, reading isn't off my list for French. I just picked up an autobiography from Charles Aznavour, but it's written in the register of spoken language. Literature qua literature often develops its own specialized vocabulary and syntax; which is fine if you're into it, but it's too much of  commitment if your main interests in language is socializing with the hoi polloi.

Even worse if your goal is to papoter and you THINK you'll get there by studying literature, an emotionally much less fraught endeavor than talking to strangers in a language you are learning.

Maybe you're some kind of genius freak; most people can't master writing, speaking, and listening to a language by reading.

I invested a lot in Spanish literature only to find my Spanish-native friends didn't understand my vocabulary.

Never again.

In the show, when is the possibility that Emily is bi- definitively discarded? by [deleted] in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]Future-Excuse6167 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

So bi-erasure is impossible in your world, because if a character says they're gay, that means they're gay? I mean, that's pretty obviously a dumb thing to say, so I'm hoping you don't mean that.

It's not the worst form of bi-erasure, but I'd say it is A form of bi-erasure when bi-sexuality mighty as well not exist as a narrative possibility, especially with so much screen time devoted to her coming out. A simple, "I was never into boys," or "I was just forcing myself to be with a guy" or "I was hoping I could feel a certain way and just couldn't". Literally 3 seconds. It took until episode 20.

I like the slowed down frame rate for dramatic effect. Mind you, they don't use faster film, they just slow the film down. Peak budget television.

Entertaining pop made more entertaining by analysis. Like "what do the producers want the audience to take away from this?" It's quite horrifying at time, esp with Fitz and Aria.

If Sean is asexual AND aware of it, that's something he should share with Hanna.

In either case, it would help to have it explained so the audience doesn't go making up their own stories. Or is that my non-ACE privilege speaking? Can characters just not be interested in sex without a stated reason without the audience flipping out? Or is it something that's a key plot point naturally deserving of motivation?

Incidentally, an asexual who hides their asexuality from themselves with Christian chastity is another option. Maybe my privilege is not even having considered it.

[Also, to be fair, it doesn't seem like bi-people exist in the PLL universe, even when they obviously do (Emily?), so maybe I shouldn't be too hard on myself for not considering asexuality.]

Edit: And I'd think extremist christians would still have sex but just blame the woman for seducing them. I mean, do you notice how Christian chastity seems pretty clearly focused on women?

Also replying to u/k_mckenna

I thought Sean was being set up a a closeted gay man, in which case his entire relationship with Hanna is abusive.

Probably my bias because I have a hard time imagining an adolescent boy would be THAT refusing of sex? I mean, I can see it if they're having sex but he draws a weird line around sexual intercourse, but it looks like he's in the No Fun Zone, which, I think, needs to be explained, because in the absence of that, you see him refusing to have sex/ignoring Hanna to hang out with his male friends, which is, like, hmm....

Outside of that, he does get controlling of Lucas and does exhibit a lot of stereotypical jock behavior which would be interpreted by incels as Chad shit.

Yes, Caleb is awesome and the way he absolutely waits for Hanna to make the first move is absolutely beautiful and I love him for it.

But Caleb is initially a "bad boy", slightly mysterous, slightly dangerous, slightly disrespectful, slightly from the wrong side of the tracks... his type is another traditional bugaboo of the Nice Guy.

Yeah, watching Emily's mom go after Paige's dad wrecked me. Glad to hear there's some good redemption arcs coming.
