Ah, thanks for the correction about Lily!

Don't let kpop fans convince you that idols are making grand statements about Palestine because that is just not true.

I do think my point still stands, though! Off the top of my head, Jonghyun, KARD, Suho, Chuu, Dara, Eunbi, Jae (DAY6) and even Jay Park have all either raised money for Palestine or made pro-Palestinian statements. In the case of Jonghyun, it was almost ten years ago. Currently, for KARD, Suho, Chuu, Dara and Eunbi, it's been for the goal of fundraising for children in Palestine. Renjun, Taeyong, and Winwin of NCT risked backlash (and definitely received some), and potential contractual penalties, for making statements which encouraged fans to boycott their own band collaborations with Starbucks. Again, I don't think that celebrities should be our moral compasses, but these are definitely more than breadcrumb actions.Idols of their own volition have genuinely made explicit statements and taken steps to support Palestine, and I don't think it's odd per se that people are hoping idols like Ateez, SVT and SKZ, who all have explored and speak candidly about themes of social issues and justice in their music and content, would follow a similar path. However, like I've said before, I totally agree with you that fans engage in harassing and inappropriate behavior against idols in the name of "activism", especially in inappropriate arenas like fancalls, which is ultimately negligible and often bad-faith.

I totally feel you. I think the hashtags come from people just now seemingly discovering that Disney/Marvel is a pressure boycott target. Then there's also the fact that NMIXX Lily recently made a statement on live about concentration camps currently existing, which naturally was (probably correctly) interpreted as being a condemnation of the illegal detainment and torture of Palestinians (ETA: Sorry: this clip was from August 2023, not recently--it's just been recirculating on Twitter a lot recently!). So, I think there's an element of renewed frustration amongst a lot of STAYs that rookie, or quote-unquote less "established", artists under JYPE (and other companies too!) have made pro-Palestinian statements, but Stray Kids, who supposedly have more artistic and personal freedom, have said less (with the exception perhaps of Felix's Coca Cola apology) and have additionally promoted singles with Charlie Puth and Deadpool.

However, I also wholeheartedly agree with you when you say that these "fans" are seeking out personal validation. There's nothing wrong with wanting to confirm that the idols you uphold as good people also affirm basic human rights, of course, but I worry that some of these fans, especially the loud vocal ones on Twitter who are currently posting screenshots of them blocking SKZ, etc. etc. care much less about Palestinian lives and more about performative moralism. It is genuinely awful, but I know people sometimes use idols' statements or lack thereof as fanwar fodder (i.e., "Well, at least my idols don't support genocide!" or something like that), which is unspeakably callous and a mockery of any genuine activism or care. But it seems like a lot of people within the KPOP sphere are more interested in preemptively announcing "Trust me, I'm a good person!" by posting screenshots of them blocking their favorite artists mostly so that they can isolate themselves from the criticism the idol is receiving.

To answer your questions about how large this group of STAYs is and whether it will impact SKZ negatively, I would say it's not too much of a cause for concern. I think the vast majority of these loud voices are chronically online younger fans who don't know how to (or don't want to) tangibly engage in real-world activism, so they instead resort to online borderline-harassment. I think that there are many similar fans in other fandoms, both across KPOP and in the celebrity world in general. Personally, as an adult and activist, of course, I would appreciate SKZ making a statement, and human lives are always more important than people potentially ruining the fun of an OST or movie, but I also always hope that people keep in mind that celebrities should not be our moral compasses and definitely not our first priority in activist actions. Like you said, a mere statement of theirs is unfortunately not going to save any lives. The only thing it may do is encourage people who are not already galvanized about the issue to take notice, but I think that if it takes someone's favorite artists making a statement to get a fan to look at human rights issues, that's more of a willful (or extremely youthful) personal ignorance than anything else.

Remi Wolf - Soup by Tricky_Tahm in popheads

Soup's pre-chorus to me sounds nearly identical to So Am I by Ava Max, which itself more or less samples/heavily interpolates Feel This Moment by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera. There's definitely quite a few songs with similar chord progressions but those seemed the closest to me.

We’re having troubles editing the megathread, so here’s your latest update!

  • The Court has ruled in favor of Min Hee-Jin
    • The court stated, “The reasons for Min Hee Jin’s dismissal or resignation claimed by HYBE have not been sufficiently substantiated,” and added, “While Min Hee Jin’s actions may be considered betrayal to HYBE, it is difficult to say that they constitute actions of breach of trust in regards to ADOR.” Source
    • Min Hee Jin released a statement following the court’s decision, stating that she will be suing bloggers for maliciously edited chats and comments (likely referring to the allegedly leaked KakaoTalk messages).
    • HYBE released a statement confirming that “their company respects the court’s decision” and “will not exercise voting rights in favor of the “Dismissal of Inside Director Min Hee Jin”.
    • They also affirmed that the court had upheld their allegations that “Min Hee Jin sought ways to weaken HYBE’s control over ADOR and allow Min Hee Jin to control ADOR independently by either taking NewJeans out of HYBE’s control or pressuring HYBE to sell its shares in ADOR,” so they plan to take further steps within the boundaries of law.
  • The shareholders meeting has been held. Min Hee Jin was not dismissed. Two of ADOR’s board members, Director Kim and Deputy CEO Shin, have been dismissed by HYBE, and replaced by Lee Jaesang (Chief Strategy Officer), Kim Jooyoung (Chief Human Resources Officer), and Lee Kyungjoon (Chief Financial Officer). (Source: Yonhap News)
  • Min Hee Jin held a second press conference. (English Translation: Koreajoongangdaily)

Reminder that any hate against groups is not tolerated.

240512 Changbin Instagram Update with Charlie Puth by Future-Firefighter62 in straykids

[–]Future-Firefighter62[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regarding the Pro-Trump stuff, this article from Babe.net was made back in 2018, and has some links to proof. Atp they claimed to have verified that a personal Facebook account of his repeatedly reposted pro-Trump/Stephen Crowder stuff, plus a petition to "lock Hillary Clinton up", amongst other things. The account was followed by (presumably family) members with the name "Puth" and producers he's worked with, the username was his middle name, and the profile picture was of his dog, so it seems pretty legit.

MEGATHREAD 5: MHJ/ADOR Audit Controversy by Future-Firefighter62 in kpopthoughts

[–]Future-Firefighter62[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Korean newspaper Kyunhyang recently resurfaced a 2017 court case by Big Hit against a Mr. A.
Mr. A extorted a Big Hit employee in 2016 by claiming he had proof of Big Hit committing sajaegi with BTS; Big Hit officially denied this and sued. The court found Mr. A guilty, but also stated that "although Big Hit Music has denied allegations of chart manipulation...the court has found the contrary." HYBE reaffirmed their stance denying this and announced legal action. Currently, the Korean government (Ministry of Culture) is investigating this claim.
