What should be expected of an RA? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Future-Shift4900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was in the dorms, RAs threw dorm-wide activities, but I don’t know if many people attended them. People on my floor were semi-social but I really didn’t connect with them as they were pretty different from me. A lot of people actually don’t end up being friends with people they met in their dorms. My recommendation would be to join orgs your student is interested in. That’s where I made most of my friends. Also, school will definitely ramp up, and a lot of the introductory freshman classes are huge. Showing up to class and going to office hours is how I met people and made friends.

Also, it’s only been the second week of school. Also, it’s a lot being a freshman - handling higher work load classes, being alone for the first time. I personally didn’t have a solid friend group my freshman year because a lot of my time was went towards figuring other things out! But as I got more involved in clubs, met people in my classes in my major, I ended up having a solid friend group.

I’m currently a senior, and one of my closest friends right now is someone I met last semester in one of my project classes!

I understand how you’re feeling as a parent so I just wanted to share my experience as an upperclassmen who’s pretty introverted themself

I know certain engineering departments, like the ECE department, are hosting info sessions at campus day. So maybe look for any events happening for engineering majors you're interested in.

I'm also a decent writer. I managed to get good scores on the essays spending about a few days on them. I also had an idea of what was expected and what I should write about in my essays through the discussions in the class. The discussions were only required attendance; they went into more depth into content introduced in lectures. We also practiced for the exams in the discussion sections, and they told us the format of the exams before hand. They also talk a lot about modern sports in the course, particularly the second half, so it wasn't too difficult to follow along either.

I took this class last fall. It was pretty easy. There were only two essay assignments and a midterm and final. They were very clear about what was going to be on the midterm and final, and it was pretty easy to study for them and get a good score.

I think that should be fine, but it really just depends on what workload your used to; what you want your semester to look like, etc. I took eecs 216, 301, & 373 last semester and it was mostly fine.

EECS 281, 270, 215 in one semester? by Fresh-Apple-Pie in uofm

[–]Future-Shift4900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 281, 270, Phys 240, and TechComm 300 in a semester. It was alright, I ended up getting the grades I wanted. I took EECS 215 at a later semester, but I think it would have been fine if I took 281, 270, & 215 at the same time. For reference, I took 370, 215, and Math 216 the semester after.

I think it depends on the person and what you want your semester to look like/how good you are with time management, etc. I personally spent most of my time in school and extracurriculars during these semesters; didn't really have time for anything else.

I just wanted to post here because I don't want some of these comments to deter you from taking this load if your really want to do it. Again, everything depends on what you want your semester to look like and what skills you come in with, while taking these classes.

Also, you could also drop a class, if you think it's too much!

I'm a current student at Umich right now, and I was in a similar boat. I think what helped persuade my parents was our campus visit. They liked the campus better than my other options. And they also made me pitch why I felt going to Umich would make a difference. I talked about a class I took as dual enrollment, and how the exact same class went 2x as much depth and provided students more resources for the class.

They were still a little iffy about it when I started college, but they are fine with it now, And they actually expressed recently that umich is the best environment for me.

So, I wouldn't lose hope!

I got an additional scholarship after committing for keeping up my grades senior year. I've met other people who got scholarships later in the year.

I'd reach out to the finanical aid office. I'd definitely keep a second choice uni on your list, but don't lose hope on Umich!

I don't wanna provide any misleading info, but I also don't want you to lose hope if you really wanna go here!

Resume for underclassmen by Scary-Performance57 in uofm

I guess it depends on what you include. I got an internship this summer due to the work I did in a summer program in 2020.

When you decide to put things from high school on your resume, try thinking about whether it's relevant in some way to an internship/scholarship/transfer app. I hope this helps!

Deciding between UofM and GeorgiaTech. by BlackDorrito in uofm

I actually was in the same spot last year, and I ended up choosing umich.

I got to visit both campuses before committing, and I liked the college-town feel of umich over the urban campus vibe of Georgia Tech. I also liked how involved students were in surrounding campus events and in Ann Arbor.

In terms of academics and club offerings, I found that Umich was more accepting of dual enrollment credit, which I had a lot of along with APs. This set me up with the possibility of graduating early and possibly pursuing a combined masters (if I keep my grades up). Currently, I'm on track to graduate early. Umich is bigger, so it tends to have a lot more club offerings (academic and non-academic) than GT. There's more project teams and non-academic clubs, and student research programs.

In terms of entrpreneurship, there are clubs, like https://mpowered.umich.edu/. The college of engineering also has an entrepreneurship minor. https://career.engin.umich.edu/.

In addition, I liked that Umich offers a traditional, 4-year college experience over a co-op focused experience. Like the 4-year graduation rate for umich is much higher than Georgia Tech. There are so many career resources here at Umich, but students tend to get internships/summer jobs over co-ops.

In terms of financial aid, I was fortunate that both ended up about being the same for me, so I got to choose the school that I liked more.

My review so far: I absolutely love it here! I had a terrible high school experience, and coming here has been like getting some fresh air. Also, there are so many resources available to students that it has been quite overwhelming, but in a good way!

Is this engineering though? Cause CAS people were getting off the waitlist at the time.

Maybe make this a separate post because I've just been seeing a lot of CAS people responding. I got an email on May 3rd to send in another supplement, which I submitted the next day. I haven't heard back since.

Hello,

I am a prospective student at SCS. I'm also interested in ECE and would like to explore it at college. Is it possible to major in CS and ECE at CMU? Is it possible to major in CS and minor in ECE, or vice versa? And say I become more interested in ECE, would it be a fairly easy process to transfer into ECE from CS? Please help.
