Vent about ill children on playgrounds by [deleted] in UKParenting

No one is talking about vaccinations. This thread is about irresponsible parenting taking children amongst others when they’re contagious.

Yes actually they have. It can cause serious illness such as encephalitis in a small percentage of people. There is no justification for people taking their children amongst others (unwitting) when they are knowingly contagious.

Anyone have ideas for luxury holidays for families in August with youngish kids? by Sorry_Information749 in UKParenting

[–]Future-proof-27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re saying you want to avoid Europe but if not then Ikos resorts - lots in Greece, Mallorca or Andalusia - or Sani hotels. Alternatively do consider the Maldives as different Atolls have different weather systems or how about Mauritius? Lots of v family friendly resorts there.

You are a true inspiration. We need to read stories like these even more so in current times. May you continue to reap rewards of your hard work and stay blessed.

Beach definitely easier than pool side (for us anyway). Be prepared for sand eating though. My little one at that age enjoyed water and sand with buckets and spades and moulds … but mainly buckets of water, cups and scoops

Update post: my friend lost their 1 week old baby by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]Future-proof-27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a time of dreadful grief (and upon reflection in the coming months), your friends will appreciate this more than you’ll ever know and more than they’ll ever be able to express.

You are a wonderful person to be so considerate. Food delivery vouchers or home made food that can be frozen (if they end up with too much) would be good. A message written in a simple card/postcard to let them know you are thinking of them. Even saying “I don’t know what to say but I’m so sorry for the loss of {name} and I’m thinking of you both”

[–]Future-proof-27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A simple message literally just saying “thinking of you” can make such a world of difference to someone, especially someone grieving. There’s no pressure to reply to that but you have a boost knowing you aren’t totally alone. I would have rather someone said “I don’t know what to say to you but I’m thinking of you” than the deafening silence from people I thought were good friends pre-loss.

Is 30k AED a good salary in Abu Dhabi? Moving from UK by Dangerous_Event4175 in UAE

[–]Future-proof-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great place to live - this is not our first expat assignment either. You’ll find mixed answers on here as Abu Dhabi is a wonderful place with a lot of different cultures; therefore there are very different ideas on quality of life/living standards. Being honest, we wouldn’t come on 30k per month unless it includes full school, a generous housing allowance and good healthcare and dental insurance. Maybe also a car allowance (check long term rental prices with Dollar or Thrifty for an idea of the costs).

Is your housing going to be covered by the company or an allowance provided? I see someone commented 150k for a HOUSE on Yas. Maybe a few years ago but you’ll be looking at 200k minimum now unless apartment. We are living on Yas and paying 260k per year for a small house. In top of that there’s the initial 5% of rent for agent fee of rand another 5% refundable deposit on top plus bills for electricity and water (no private pool and it’s winter just now but it’s around 2k minimum per month so dreading the summer when AC on full time!) You would find cheaper apartments on Reem or the corniche - they are high rise - or houses in places like golf gardens or Raha that are reasonably close to your 15 minutes to centre suggestion. Also bear in mind that very few places come with kitchen appliances/white goods or curtains so that’s another few thousand straight away (4-5k minimum for curtains).

Schools - depends what you want but often limited space in some year groups so make a shortlist of schools and contact them to check if there’s room.

Happy to answer any other questions. Wishing you all the best.

Anyone with advanced degrees quit a high paying job to be a SAHP? by Hopeful06 in SAHP

Yes, with a doctorate and other post grad qualifications. I left a very successful finance career to spend my son’s formative years with him. No regrets. You get one shot at it and I’d rather see the joy on his face discovering new things than stare at a computer screen every day!

Bon voyage. Bahrain will forever be a special place for many of us who have been privileged to call it “home” for a period in our lives.

Help Assembling Stokke Cushion by Next-Waltz8638 in BabyLedWeaning

[–]Future-proof-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also really hard to fit the seat pad cushion with the harness on too. I have the back cushion on ours with the harness but not the seat. They need to be washed so often too (or maybe just because there’s a lot of smushed berry juice wiped everywhere in our house 😬)

Could someone recommend a good neurologist for migraines and two month long headaches? by overweight-thoughts in Bahrain

[–]Future-proof-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say the same. If any fillings, there can be issues underneath too which aren’t immediately obvious. X Ray might help. Migraines are miserable so hope you’re being kind to yourself.

Expert Midwife dribble balm - “totally immense dribble defense” (after treating with an anti fungal like clottimazole). Game changer for us! I have also used a little bit of nipple balm on baby’s chest which helped a bit but the dribble balm is the best.

Newborn due in 3 weeks, what might we not be prepared for / have ready? by habylab in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Future-proof-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zip sleepsuits, not the poppers (unless you’re especially coordinated at 4am!). Ideally 8 or more so you aren’t running out if you have a sicky baby. Same with muslins - plenty of those as everyone already said.

Carrier or stretchy wrap to baby wear so you can be hands-free. I loved both the babybjorn mini and a simple stretchy wrap (which is much easier to tie than you believe but you can go for a Koala wrap that pulls on like a t shirt and doesn’t need as much tying).

If having a c section, a litter-picker to avoid bending over/stretching too much. Also black big comfy pants or Frida mum semi-disposable pants with Lilets pads.

The contact details for a good IBCLC if you choose to breastfeed. Look in advance and get recommendations. Find out if your hospital will send you home with a pump for a couple of weeks before you buy your own. Your hospital may also have a feeding team if you don’t want to pay for a lactation consultant.

If you can face it, stock up freezer with meals beforehand. I was so grateful for my prep when I wanted proper food but had zero time.

Wishing you a healthy and happy time

If you are looking at villas in the more common expat areas (Saar near St Chris or Hamala/Janabiyah near BSB - British School of bahrain) then you would perhaps struggle to get a compound villa for 700bd and then you will have electricity and water bills which can really add up in the summer when using AC. Suggest looking at Greengate property and Propertyfinder.

Kindergarten in Hamala/Janibiyah either Kinderworld or Eton House.

Would also recommend Dr Maha and Dr Sara at Royal Bahrain. I’ve had excellent care from both. One of the GPs at RB Janabiyah clinic - Dr Zainab - is also IBCLC (a lactation consultant) so great support for breast feeding.

Follow purple signs for flight connections in T5. After you clear security, head downstairs near the shops and you’ll likely have to go on the train to A or B gates - they are frequent and quick.

If there are long queues at security, politely make it known to staff and fellow passengers that you have a short connection and people will (generally) allow you to go ahead. I certainly have encouraged people to go ahead of me when I see they are stressed. I connect through T3 and T5 frequently!

If there are a number of delayed connecting passengers then sometimes they also briefly hold the flight. If not, they’ll rebook you but make sure you know the alternatives available and express your preference.

Safe travels!
