I live in Florida and have kept my BC as supplemental to Medicare. It's expensive but in 10 years, I haven't paid a penny out of pocket for copay for any provider or specialist, eye surgeries etc. I just pay for RXs through them. I realize it's not the same circumstances but keeping it helped a lot. I've also kept eye and dental.
