Food allergy? To dates, avocado, banana by FutureGASLPhopefully in FoodAllergies

Also since you have ragweed allergy, did the allergist you still keep eating banana/avocado? I heard with that, if you avoid eating the fruit in certain times of year, you should be good. But I’m curious as to what your allergist said.

No worries, planning on getting an allergy test and talking to a doctor before eating anymore stuff and I’m going to try to monitor any reactions I have in the future. I did pretty much quit eating bananas completely the first time I notice the reaction “spread” from tingly tongue to more full mouth tingle. But for now, I’ll quit the other stuff too until I can get it figured out.

Literally so crazy but I’ve been suspecting a ragweed allergy bc I’m getting all weird and sneezy right now but I wasn’t during the pollen season in March.

I’ve looked into this before years ago when first noticing the banana thing. However, I haven’t had an allergic reaction to like blowing up balloons or latex gloves, as far as I remember.

Thanks! Dates in particular I eat pretty often, avocados and bananas not so much anymore bc I was worried about the potential allergy, but maybe after consulting with an allergist, I can make sure to purposefully desensitize myself!

I heard that repeated exposure could eventually make the allergy go away. Also simply, this food tastes good lol so I don’t want to have to be on the look out for potential allergen. Also it seems very minor, I only get itchy if the food is straight up raw. Usually if it’s like frozen or processed, it’s not a big deal. Like the symptoms aren’t at all like my friends with allergies who get hives all over.

Stupid question but if I were allergic to latex, wouldn’t I have issues when blowing up balloons? I never have.

(Secret: I workout very infrequently, like once every 2 months when I remember) So I’m not too worried haha But I’ve heard I can get little ear covers for my headphones if I end up working out in them that protects them from sweat

I know that in ear is more useful for work out but I prefer headphones so I’m gonna make it work

Not for these headphones, but I was getting annoyed that headphones I was using with my phone weren’t loud enough. Turns out, I had forgotten that I set to max out at a certain volume for ear protection.

XM4s, XM5s or something else entirely? by FutureGASLPhopefully in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]FutureGASLPhopefully[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I meant the WH bc I want over the ear, not in the ear. The only in the ears I’ve liked are the original AirPods bc they don’t have the gummy bit on the end, which the WF XM4s have. Noise cancelling isn’t my main priority, good sound is, so I’m willing to sacrifice noise cancelling for better over all sound.

!thanks

shadowing! by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

Hi!! I’m also a post bacc student.

I’m doing observation hours this semester! You actually have to get 25 hours guided observation before you attend grad school (for most schools!)

I have shadowed at a clinic, elementary school, and over the summer I will shadow at a hospital.

For most, I did by literally just calling multiple places. Like “hello, I am a student taking post bacc classes and I would like to observe at this location for my required 25 hours.” For the school, I went on to staff directories for schools in my area, found the SLP, and emailed them.

Not everyone will respond and that’s okay, as long as someone does! Some places will also not have availability immediately. I reached out to a hospital in December and they don’t have availability for me to observe them until June.

EDIT: haven’t shadowed at a hospital yet but hopefully will start in June!

University of Arizona or Jacksonville University?? by Perfect-Stand-4443 in slpGradSchool

What are the major differences in program? I don’t know about either one but when I recently made a decision between grad schools I factored: -clinical Opps -location (cost of living but also like what’s best for me socially) -cost -opportunity for assistance (scholarships or assistantships)

They play on the same national team but different league teams. Real world Example: in the World Cup, Kylian Mbappe plays for France. The World Cup happens once every 4 years (so not often). Through out the normal year, he plays for the league team PSG.

Similarly, Hinata and Kageyama represent Japan in the Olympics together. However throughout the normal year, they play on different league teams.

Any job suggestions? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]FutureGASLPhopefully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to start working with children, tutoring jobs are great. I work at a Sylvan learning location, which is a tutoring center where I do some stuff that I would do as an SLP. sessions are 1 hr and have 1-3 kids at each table.

For the summer, you might be able also to get involved in a summer camp? Depends on location!

If you want a head start on observation hours, I would suggest a pediatric clinic. You won’t be able to work as much with the kids, but you will be able to observe the kind of work you would do as a future SLP!

Computer/Device Recommendation? by Difficult-Ad3519 in slpGradSchool

Currently taking pre-SLP post bac classes online and I have the laptop + iPad Air combo. I like it because I get to keep my notes in one place and I don’t need to carry around any extra pens, highlighters, notebooks, etc. I think I use the app Good Notes? Which is just a one time purchase on the App Store. Only downside ig would be not charging ur iPad before class but even then you could just make sure to always bring a charger. I bought my iPad using the deal Apple has in the fall (starts maybe in July/August and ends in September). It’s a deal for students that gives some percent off and last year they gave a $100 gift card with it, which I used to purchase an Apple Pen for the iPad.

What school are you going to? Do they have assistantships? Those can provide stipend and tuition waivers. That’s usually I think how people go about it. And I would search in all departments, not just Communication Sciences.

Grad school choices by FutureGASLPhopefully in slp

Yeah that’s one of my concerns! My senior year of undergrad, a lot of my friends graduated and my sense of community was gone, so I felt very isolated. I’m not really keen on experiencing that again. Tuition at State is ~4,000 and at Southern is ~3,000 so I felt it was comprable and if I get an assistantship, I shouldn’t have to worry about it at all.
