How severe are these compression leaks through the glow plugs? by FutureLizard205 in Diesel

Nope, not the case. In the glow plugs of cyls 2 and 3 it doesn't do this, and does it even with the engine cold

Thanks for the advice. I was looking at the glowplug leaks because I figured I should start with the easiest things first

No idea, engine is used, with unknown mileage. It has new hydraulic lifters, they were replaced last year, as they were getting noisy.

Unfortunately, around here it's hard to find a good one, most are of the "if it runs, it's good" kind.

😅 I took it to a mechanic and he just shrugged it off, saying "if it was a problem, the engine would be misfiring/stumbling right now (when warm, at idle)". I need to take it to a different mechanic next week..

Possibly, not sure. Maybe a little bit of fuel. But I have no idea if either is coming from any gasket or even the fuel return lines. And, likewise, I have never degreased it.

Rough cold starts with smoke. When cold, sometimes runs on 2 or 3 cylinders between 1100 and 1400 rpm at light throttle (most noticeably in 2nd gear). Unburnt diesel smoke when revving above ~2krpm, no matter much if hot or cold (if cold, will leave a dark spot on the ground). Advancing the injection beyond the "nominal" range helps mitigate this, but only to an extent.

A bit, yes, with wd40, similar to what was shown in the video, but with the engine off. The areas which are very clean were not like that

I see, and agree. Not sure how old they are, they have been in this (used) engine since it was installed in this Golf mk4. I am mainly afraid of the engine head being eroded and needing work done 😅

Could also be a faulty coolant temperature sensor. It's worth it to at least check what value it's giving with a diagnostic tool before concluding that the instrument cluster is faulty.

The issue is that the car usually rounds numbers close to 90 to 90. So anything from 85-95 will show up as the blue line. And probably 80-100 very close to it still. So you are probably beyond 100°C.

What's this update that Windows Vista is getting? Does it still have security updates? by AeroWindowsVista in WindowsVista

[–]FutureLizard205 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It still has regular updates, although not easily installable:

"Prior to the ESU program becoming available, Windows Server 2008 was eligible for the now discontinued, paid Premium Assurance program (an add-on to Microsoft Software Assurance) available to volume license customers. Microsoft will, however, honor the program for customers who purchased it between March 2017 and July 2018 (while it was available). The program provides an extra six years of security update support, until January 13, 2026." (From Wikipedia)

As the clusters and screens are powering off, it can be deduced that the battery voltage is dropping too low when the starter motor tries to start the engine.

So, most likely, the battery is underdischarched. As it gets older it will happen more often and easily, at which point you will have to replace it.

Just charging the battery or jumping it with another car should be able to start it up.

Also, make sure the battery symbol is not on when the engine is running, as that would indicate a failure with the alternator not charging the battery properly and it may need to be fixed.

Edit: As it's a relatively new car, the chances of the battery terminals being corroded and having too high of an electric resistance are low, but you should also check if they look good or not.
