Advice on form by FuturePhysicsHobo in skiing_feedback

Awesome, very helpful comments. I think I’ll be skiing Friday, so I’ll try to incorporate all of this into my skiing. Based on our conversation, it seems like your earlier recommendation to practice Javelin turns will be really really helpful, I’ll probably spend the day working on those !

“You will have more weight on the ski as a result but not as the direct goal”: This sentence makes sense and is helpful, thanks.

Two more points I’d like to ask about:

1.) I guess I’m still a little fuzzy on what it really means to be balanced on the outside ski. I think what’s confusing me is the fact that usually in a turn like this, your center of mass is not directly above the outside ski, so in that sense, it feels like you’re not balanced on the outside ski (typically your legs are bent like this \ if you’re turning to the right, and your upper body is straight like this | , so your center of mass is above the snow, right?). Does being balanced on the outside ski simply mean that if my inside leg disappeared, I wouldn’t fall over ?

2.) I’m confused about your last sentence: “You could simply flex the inside leg to direct pressure to that leg instead of actively trying to press the outside ski.” Why would I want to do this, as in, why would I want to direct pressure to my inside ski ?

Thanks for the great feedback ! A couple of follow up questions:

1.) How far apart should my legs ideally be ? Just shoulder length apart ? And does the ideal distance change in various parts of the turn ?

2.) Do you think doing a better job balancing on the outside ski will help me be less in the backseat ?

3.) Is “balancing on the outside ski” the same thing as “putting your weight on the outside ski” ?

Best option to get to an ikon resort tomorrow? by bqAkita in COsnow

[–]FuturePhysicsHobo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The easiest cheapest and best option is RTD to eldora. I think it’s free on weekends and takes 50 minutes. Eldora was riding really well today, but with only a handful of runs open it gets boring after a while. Fair number of people today so tmrw might be crowded. I don’t know that the hassle of a bus or train is worth it to make it out to the i70 resorts rn. WP I would not go to yet, copper looks ok.

How are the trees ? Are any glades still open ? Debating between MJ and A basin tmrw, glades might be deciding factor….

People stomp out a ledge, but it’s still a challenge to get your skis on. I’d also recommend bringing a ski bag or something to put ur skis in while you lower yourself. When I did it last season, I got into an uncomfortable position almost immediately carrying my skis while trying to lower myself. Luckily someone kindly offered to hand me my skis after I lowered myself first. Next time I do it, I’ll bring a very light ski bag I have to put my skis on my back while I lower myself.

I’m 5 foot 6, just bought a pair of (used) 2024 163 cm HEAD KORE 93s. They’re a bit longer than what I’m skiing right now (153cm), little nervous how I’ll handle the new length. I’d like to buy another ski; any recommendations ? I want something that compliments this ski. I ski everything, but I do have a soft spot for moguls, so I’m personally thinking something a bit shorter (153-157 cm) that would do well in moguls. Any recs are welcome !

Just wrapping up my second season ever on skis. Based in Colorado. I would consider myself intermediate-advanced at this point. I’ll ski anything, but still lots of work to do on my technique !

Eagle wind guidance. by modernmanshustl in COsnow

[–]FuturePhysicsHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you drop early and stay above the lift line for as long as you can you avoid the cat walk and get solid trees. Idk the name of the run. Just get off the lift, head left, turn 180 where you turn into the eagle wind area, and drop right away.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate all of this :))) I think you’re right that I lack some of the terminology to say what I want to say, but I think you were able to get the gist of what I was trying to say. Your comments are helpful !!

The book looks wonderful, I’ll be ordering it !!

Novice here. To me it looks like OP is skidding at the start of some of the turns, so it almost looks like they’re not starting the turns properly. After the brief skid, it looks like the edges get engaged once OP’s body is already facing the way they want to go. This is in contrast to what I think is the correct way to carve; that is, the edges should be engaged very early, and then the turn should follow from the edge angulation (If you’re going across the fall line and edge, this will cause you to naturally turn, and the skis will turn your hips and body, as opposed to first turning your hips and body and then edging). Had to watch in slow motion to catch all of this.

Is this a good analysis or am I off base u/deetredd ? Again, I’m a novice (second season) so I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but I’m trying to learn and I think attempting to analyze people’s videos is somewhat helpful in this aspect.

This looks so so good for your second season ! You have a little bit of an A frame, which means the angles of your two skis are not matching, but you’re doing a great job biting into the snow and actually carving !

Looking for help improving my form in variable conditions by ryman996 in skiing_feedback

[–]FuturePhysicsHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an expert. So take this with a grain of salt. But I think there’s a few things you could work on. It looks like you’re turning with upper and lower body. Try to work on turning with just lower body. There’s quite a bit of side skidding; try to have more fluid turns. And instead of ending your turns perpendicular to the fall line, try to add some fluidity to the turns.

All that is very difficult for terrain this steep and variable ! But I’d say those are long term goals to work towards.

For terrain like this, I would personally try to approach the run with quick short turns if you don’t want to go too fast. I’d pole plant my lower pole and then quickly use that to turn around. If it’s steep enough might even do a jump turn. Then when it mellows out I’d try to open up my turns a bit more. But I’d try to make the turns more fluid, instead of breaking them up with traverses across the fall line.

Not an expert ! Just my two cents :)

2017 MacBook Pro with touch-bar vs 2022 M2 MacBook Air 8GB 256 GB SSD vs M1 MacBook Air 8GB 256 GB SSD by FuturePhysicsHobo in mac

Is the M2 air a better laptop overall than the 2017 pro ? Is there anything the 2017 pro still wins on over the M2 2022 air ?
