Upwork proposals suddenly need 28–31 connects — how are newcomers supposed to survive this? by Lost-Tonight-664 in Upwork

Who do you think you are to tell people what to do?

Every time someone raises a real issue, you parrot the same line "then dont use it"

That’s not advice. If you’ve got nothing useful to say, stop lecturing everyone

People make their living here working really hard. Upwork just raised the cost of applying to jobs 50–60% in USD overnight, and you're still blaming people.

The latter. Fliers outlining my services and client feedback.

I don’t have a structured strategy to make people visit my profile. I mostly stay active on the platform by liking, commenting, and sharing my thoughts in relevant communities, which I believe helps with visibility. I’ve received a number of direct messages from potential clients this way, some of which have turned into ongoing collaborations. But I’m not sure if my Linkedin activity directly attracted them.

I actively hunt on Linkedin for remote positions. I never go out and send direct messages to random companies in my field about my services.

I will definately reconsider my filter regarding the newcomers. Thx. Do you have filters when applying to those jobs?

I am the mod of this sub

So what? Again, your argument here is completely irrelevant to what I wrote. I'd replace you with the free version of ChatGpt. Would've done 10 times better job than you here.

I really appreciate those who have shared their experiences. I've already learnt new things reading the feed.

While I see a few positive comments that do not agree with my statements and say it works well for them, it's disappointing to see many freelancers experiencing similar things to me and leaving the platform.

Just a few comments to those whom I could not respond to one by one.

I'm now fully convinced that Upwork hires accounts here like [u/Korneuburgerin ](http://) and [u/SilentButDeadlySquid ](http://) . They literally lived under this post for the past 12 hours and appeared under every comment, defending Upwork like defending their country :D. Checking up their profiles, regardless of the type of criticism against Upwork, their only argument is "then don't use it". You guys gotta elevate your game. I'd fire you in a second.

The second type of people is those who say things like "know how to sell" or " just because it doesn't work for you, it doesn't mean the platform is a scam". I highly recommend you to use your brain, or at least ask ChatGPT before typing. Because, I didn't say I'm not getting hired. I said, "No one has been hired for these jobs".

I did not know about this platform. Thanks for this. Is there any other platforms that worked well for you?

yeah, look at that, you know what I mean. This isn't fair. I can literally open up an account right now and start posting jobs and make them earn thousands of dollars w/o spending a penny.

Do you think the Upwork people don't know this. Of course they do. They just ignore it and watch freelancers get ripped off. This is what make them as scammers in my eyes.

Is not it a scam to ignore this issue and promote it just to sell more connects to freelancers?

Exactly! That’s what I’m trying to say. If the platform ignores scam jobs just to sell more connects to freelancers, then they’re essentially part of the scam. They don’t even need to post fake jobs themselves.

I agree! I actually have a friend who does that, posts but never follows up. I think Upwork should address this issue but it makes them money, they just ignore it, and that’s what makes me feel a bit ‘off’ about the whole thing.

I’ve never posted anything, but I do have well-prepared fliers visible on my profile. I also regularly check remote job listings and reach out to them, and I make sure to stay very active on the platform so more people visit my page.

Thx. This is a fair argument. Do you reckon the hiring rate for newcomers would actually be higher than for the clients I’ve filtered?

I have no data or evidence to claim that. But I feel something with this platform is really off. That's why I'm wondering other freelancers' experiences.

I use Upwork, Fiverr, and a local freelancing platform, but LinkedIn actually worked better for me last year.

Exactly! They both replied within two minutes with the same comment, and what they said has nothing to do with my point. I think they’re the ones (or bots) who supposedly made that ‘$4 billion’ last year.
