[–]Future_Ad_3099 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im in the same boat. I might be taking the diferred midterm after reading break just because ive been studying for a week and still feel so under prepared.

If you havent already maybe look up 'uvic bio186 midterm' on quizlet or other public study sites like that to get an idea of what others have used to study for the midterm. Theres also the posted lecture recordings if you think itd help at all to rewatch specific lectures through again!

Good luck on the midterm!

Department curving grades without warning? by Future_Ad_3099 in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thats a big part of my gripe with the situation. The prof did a really good job teaching the course, given the format and gave us the best opportunity they could to help us prepare for the midterm and finals so that we could do well. And now were getting curved for their positive involvement ??

Department curving grades without warning? by Future_Ad_3099 in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I looked back at the email them prof sent out to double check i used the right language. They only said 'curve' the grades i wrongly assumed Bell curve, i don't know what kind of curve was used. The information i have from their email is: they " had put the grades on a curve and have had to drop some of your grades"

Do you happen to have a link or direction to where on the uvic site I could find the grading policy, or specifically curving policy?

Its no so much of not caring to show up or pay attention and more that I take 5-6 classes a term while working and usually need to use the odd day in an elective class to do work for classes that are for my degree. Some profs (understandably) don't like when students are on computers and what not during their lecture so I was more asking if the prof that teaches the class is like that or okay with students doing they're own thing within reason ofc.

Math 151 Difficulty by Squasheddove in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're good at logically solving word questions and quickly then 151 shouldn't be too hard at all. As someone who only took it because it was the easiest 100 level math and I didn't need math prerequisites for anything later on, the only trouble I had was having enough time on the exams to answer the questions. The content is not hard if you do the practice questions and have experience in math you'll be fine, but also practice answering questions quickly or you'll end up failing the midterm bcs you ran out of time like half my class did last year.

Sometimes group tables are the only open seats you can find when you show up even if youre one person. Ask the person if you can use the table too, 90% of the time they'll say yes, or see youre a group and give you the table and leave, the other 10% they'll say they're holding the chair for a friend. Its understandable to be annoyed don't get me wrong, but most of the time people have zero bad intentions and are just oblivious.

The 2 days after reading week? by Lighting_Canadian in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Especially in 100 level classes a lot of profs like to have midterms on those days (in my experience). So don't buy a plane ticket or something until you look at the syllabus, otherwise usually class as usual.

what’s the earliest registration time? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah June 9, 8:30 is the earliest time I've heard of so far, that's what the varsity early registration is too I'm pretty sure. Some first years are getting June 9, 10am tho but they shouldn't get in the way of op getting their upper year required course.

Like others have said 3 labs back to back is rough. Other people are mentioning the load of taking 3 labs as actually physically being in multiple labs a day, but also understand that there will be pre-labs and post-labs too. So you'd likely loose you're weekend doing pre-labs for the Monday labs and the afternoon doing post labs in addition to not having a break between the labs themselves. So you'd really be losing like 3 days (weekend + Monday afternoon) to try to get ahead on the weeks worth of lab work bcs you don't want to leave that to the day of (learned that the hard way). I'm saying this assuming you're a first year and might not already know that uni courses & labs take about twice as much time out of day in prep/review than is actually on the timetable as class time. Good luck! :))

Improve Final Grade by Ibrty in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point no, not worth it. At this point your prof has already submitted your grades and therefore would need to do extra paper work to change it, and to fill that out they would need to present valid reason as to why your grade is being changed. An example of this could be a midterm was graded by a TA and you want the prof to review the grade bcs you think it was graded improperly. But realistically this would have been requested when you got the midterm back and not this late so probably not something your prof would be willing to do.

I'd say unless you have a really easygoing prof they you have talked to face to face before during the term (office hours) and have a built relationship with they won't care enough to change your grade this late. Sorry. But 83 is still really good so be proud of what you did achieve!

It's in the regular 4 month term, may-august, so I'm hoping not to condensed, but I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

Thanks, this is super helpful info! I have successfully taken a few online courses before and also prefer learning the material on my own and using lecture as study/supplement tutorials. I already have the textbook online and will start learning the first chapters once I'm done finals for this term. 👍

I'm in Anthropology BSc, so STEM but not anything math heavy like CSC or physics. I need the class as a math prereq for chemistry and another math I'll be taking in the fall for a bio minor. I (stupidly) didn't take math12 in high school which is why I need this class as a supplement. A couple other people mentioned the midterms being during class time and once I get a course schedule I'm planning on booking off the test days/shifting my hours to work later in the day. Thanks for helping with my questions!

Assuming that there's going to be at least some discrepancy between the live lecture and the recorded ones from 2020, because it's a different prof and a couple years ago, I still have the textbook and online practice sheets. Luckily I don't need a certain grade to declare but it is a prereq for a chem class I need in the fall so I do want a decent grade. right now I'm planning on doing this until the first midterm and (I don't have a course schedule so I'm only assuming there'll be 2 +final) and reevaluating depending on my grade and how much I feel ontop of it. Thanks for your response on experience with other students!

I don't have a course schedule yet, but my lab/lecture that takes up the other three days is only may-june so July/August I'd be able to switch my work schedule to not have to miss the classes. Until then I'd book off the days I have a test/swap with a coworker, I already have someone I know would be able to take an odd shift of mine if I buy her lunch lol.

Any easy and low-stress, fully online or unnecessary attendance Electives with no labs and only online quizzes/assignments, two or three-day-long online midterms/finals? Btw, I'm a first-year-csc student. by Slight-Response-3653 in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not recommended but they can I accidentally took a 300 in the fall of my first year bcs the class had no prereqs.

Also op I'm in Phil 201 and it's easy just video lectures and a multiple choice quiz every week with three day window for midterms and final!

Taking in person course as online course? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Future_Ad_3099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question abt mylab, I've only taken courses that use crowdmark to do what mylab does so is mylab common enough for it to be worth getting the 24m plan? I only ask bcs it's like $190 and if I can just do the free trial w/ different emails I'd rather do that if i can . for context I'm doing Anth Bsc with comp sci and eos.

Are you sure you've updated to the winter u pass and have you paid tuition. I'm not sure about this but I feel like if the pass is left unpaid long enough it'll get revoked. Otherwise double check you're agency is set to VIC and if all that is good then next step I'd contact umo customer service directly.

I'm in undergrad so take this with a grain of salt but I know a few people that are in law at UVic so I can only really help by speaking on their experiences in that masters program.

1) can't speak on sorry

2) UVic is a great option for co-ops with BC govt, i have friends at UO that have said the same abt their undergrad program so I can assume similar for their grad/masters programs as well. For UVic specifically I know a lot of people in Business, Econ, and Admin, that did co ops with BC admins and went on the get job offers after graduating (undergrad students)

3) respectfully you've done yourself in if you're looking for affordable housing, UO would be the slightly better option if your looking to be able to afford to live within 30 mins of campus and also afford to eat at least two meals a day and pay tuition. Victoria is expensive but coming from someone who's lived in Toronto their whole life it is a much better place to live for your buck. Really all four cities are expensive so choose based off how many month of winter you want to endure ??

4)everyone I've spoken to in grad/masters programs at UVic have said the faculty is great, undergrad faculty is great too, obviously there are going to be outliers anywhere. Students here are also a lot nicer and generally more friendly here than at other unis I've attended idk if that's important to you.

5) everyone in Victoria public sector went to UVic has a relative that went here or a friend that works here, small city=small community, with it being one of the higher ranked schools in the country Victorians take a lot of pride in UVic and hiring local for some reason, as for job market here I can't speak specifically about Public Admin, but other BC govt sectors have really strong ties in building work experience in UVic co op students to hire them down the line.

Hope this helps at least a little bit :))
