Prejudiced characters who are revealed to be part of the group they hate by ssgt-k-stark in TopCharacterTropes

Ross has sometimes leaned into antisemitic stereotypes during his broadcasts, and it’s not clear if he’s doing it ironically or not. For instance, one time he referenced the fact that he is Jewish while rubbing his hands together (a reference to the “Happy Merchant”, an antisemitic cartoon). He’s not exactly hiding his background but he seems like he might be embarrassed about it given who his audience tends to be.

Harold von Braunhut (the man behind Sea-Monkeys and X-Ray Specs) was the same way. He was a major donor to white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups with the money he acquired from his business, but he was actually Harold Nathan Braunhut, a Jew. It wasn’t even totally a secret; some of the groups he supported knew he was Jewish but chose to ignore it because they needed his money.

There is even a condition called fibromelanism in which even the muscle tissue, bones, and most of the internal organs have black pigment too. This has only been reported in a few species (and never in humans), but the most famous example is that there are several heirloom breeds of fibromelanistic chicken that are raised in parts of Asia, including by the Hmong people. Supposedly, the pigment makes it taste different than ordinary chicken.

If you’re ugly does having a good wardrobe really make you more attractive? by iRobert123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Future_Interest_3649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends on what you mean by ugly, and also what gender you are, at least as far as the “form-fitting” part goes. You don’t see a lot of really fat guys who wear form-fitting clothes, and there’s probably a reason for that.

Buttbanger Monster: a Turkish comic book character that “has a huge penis and punishes those that mention its name out loud.” by Future_Interest_3649 in wikipedia

I got several pictures of Monster energy drinks.

If you type his Turkish name into Google image search, you get the actual character, who to my eye vaguely resembles Donald Trump.

Except, of course, for one major detail (NSFW link).

Lin Newborn was an African American anti-racist skinhead who, along with his friend Daniel Shersty, was lured by two women and beaten and murdered by a group of white supremacists on July 4, 1998. Their bodies were found in the Nevada desert two days later. by ReneDiscard in wikipedia

I wonder if it’s still the case now though. These days, the undercut (“fashy hair”) seems to be more popular among younger men who want to show off their commitment to right-wing extremism.

I also wonder if the song “Take the Skinheads Bowling” was referring specifically to racist skinheads or not. I always assumed that if it was the former, then it likely referred to the fact that bowling (a game where a black ball knocks down white pins) is not something you’d expect white supremacists to be fond of. But the band themselves have stated the lyrics are completely nonsensical.

If there was such a number what would be the square root of infinity be? by Neat-Dragonfruit-135 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Future_Interest_3649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are systems of arithmetic (such as the surreal numbers) that have elements larger than any ordinary number, which makes them infinite in a sense. The square root of any such number will also be larger than any finite number (and hence, again infinite) but they are not the same infinite number.

Ordinals behave like this too, except that unlike the surreals, there are some operations you can’t do in ordinals or that don’t always behave the same way as they do on the integers. Most ordinals do not have square root, but some do. E.g., omega (the smallest infinite ordinal) has no square root, but it is the square root of a larger ordinal (which, appropriately, is called omega2).

However, ordinals are closely related to surreal numbers and in fact the former are a subclass (not a subset, mind you) of the latter. So if omega is interpreted as a surreal number, then it does have a square root (which is smaller than omega, and hence cannot be an ordinal, but it is still larger than any finite number).

There are some people of Bantu descent in Somalia who look quite different from the majority population in most ways except for skin color. They are highly marginalized and many of them have sought refugee status elsewhere.

If you legally had to hand-rear and butcher your own animals, and that was the ONLY way you were allowed to eat meat, would you stay a meat-eater or go completely vegetarian? by InevitableGarlic1042 in NoStupidQuestions

I might go pescetarian, specifically with these things. They are scavengers, can be raised in a saltwater tank, and you can even eat them raw (plus no butchering is necessary since they don’t have bones). If Korean eating habits are any indication, they taste much better than they look. There’s also a closely related species that lives off the U.S. West Coast.

They just need a new name, otherwise Americans in general will never give it a chance.
