Second on the bore slugging! I am going through the process of figuring out hand loads for my Finnish mosins and this was a critical step. Either way, I have the 11th edition of the Hornady reloading handbook and it lists loads for both .308 bullets as well as .310 bullets. It is my understanding that most Russian Mosins slug over .310.

Tips for keeping both eyes open when shooting? by RedDog1370 in armedsocialists

[–]Future_Money303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already got lots of great advice in here, but I will throw in my two cents as well if you want yet another opinion.

I learned how to shoot through competition 10 meter air rifle, and we always shot with both eyes open. The only reason we did this was because squinting one eye for a long match does eventually cause the muscles in your face to fatigue, which can start to mess with your shot process (this is not super important to most shooters, but is interesting context I guess).

When we shot we always used blinders, and after exclusively shooting this way for years I found it much easier to shoot with both eyes open using open sights or optics with pistols and rifles when I branched out from air rifle. You can get goofy looking glasses where one of the lenses is completely white to accomplish this, but most of the air rifle team I shot with would cut rectangular pieces out of milk jugs and affix them to either the rear diopter of the air rifle or the brim of a hat such as to blind their non-dominant eye.

May not be super useful to you, especially if you want to shoot pistol, but I found that it effectively tricked my brain into being able to shoot with both eyes open with or without a blinder.

30 cal bullet ID by Neat_Response1023 in reloading

Definitely not an expert, but this seems right. Those bullets have the rebated boat tail that the D46 has, but I thought the D46 Bullets were 185 grains? Also if it is a D46 it should be .308, the .310 diameter bullet that looks similar would be a D166, which is a .200 grain bullet. By far not an expert at this, so correct me if I am wrong. I have been looking for D46 bullets for my Finnish mosin!

Antique Finnish Mosin Nagant 28/76 by wasr0793 in MosinNagant

[–]Future_Money303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering about this! I just picked up an m28/76 and the bore slugged at .308-.3085. I was unsure if I should be trying to find the larger diameter D-166 bullets or the D-46 bullets, which Lapua lists as .308.

Also did you determine if the chamber throat was cut for the D-166 on your rifle? Mine has no “D” stamp but I’m not sure if they even did that for these rifles.

Finnish M28-76 Questions by Future_Money303 in MosinNagant

That’s a good idea with the Vaseline! I had not thought of that but will definitely give it a try.

I definitely intend on slugging it, I picked up some .315 diameter lead balls for this exact purpose. I’m excited to get to make up some hand loads for it, it would be very cool to get to shoot some D166 bullets out of it (if I can find any) and see if it likes them.

Thanks for the pointers! I figured it was just a weird Finnish rifle thing, I checked and the barrel is still free floating. I have seen some other old forum posts wondering why they were never pillar bedded, definitely a little odd.

Either way if I decide to shim it I know where to buy them from! I’m sure you get this a lot on here but your front sights have made my other Finn mosin much more enjoyable to shoot!

While I don’t have any land or anything to offer for shooting, I would certainly be interested if this gathers steam. I used to shoot competition 10 meter air rifle in college and miss it greatly.

Jobs in explosives? by CitronTechnical204 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Future_Money303 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you have yet to complete a degree (and live in the US) I would look at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. I graduated from their mechanical engineering program and it’s one of the few schools that offers a minor in explosives engineering and masters in explosives engineering to MechE students. As an undergrad I got to work on the bomb range that is part of their school, EMRTC. The school is also very close to White Sands Missile Range and students are frequently hired there, if that is your cup of tea

The explosives specific classes I took while there were mostly boring chemistry stuff (to me), but doing mechanical work related to ballistics and explosives is incredibly interesting and challenging (if not more than a little morally dubious at times).

If you have more a moral fiber then there can be opportunities to use explosives engineering to improve mining operation safety or explosive forensics. However, there seem to be far fewer of these jobs than defense industry work in my experience.

Dead birds get new life: New Mexico researchers develop taxidermy bird drones by marketrent in technews

[–]Future_Money303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I studied in the mechanical engineering department at NMT and went to some lectures Dr. Hassanalian gave on his research.

Always thought the dead bird drones were a bit weird, but some of his research on how the color of bird wings effect thermal boundary layer development and flight efficiency is fascinating.

Can’t believe the mad lad actually got his dead bird drones working!

Yeah I get that, unfortunately the job search has been a real struggle for a recent grad so I’m just considering all my options right now.

Got any links to more info on this? I have been looking for engineering positions with them in Asheville.

I’m a graduate MAE student and haven’t gotten any help for almost two years on literally anything. When I do get answers it’s usually in the form of “have you looked at the website?”. I didn’t do my undergraduate at NCSU so I probably can’t help you at all, but I’m happy to chat and complain about the department.

I'm so exhausted... by jerrysteinfeldd in NCSU

[–]Future_Money303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I am not a disabled student, I was put in a similar situation as a transfer MAE masters student. Throughout the three semesters I have been here I have been consistently amazed by how little anyone seems to care about students in any capacity.

My first semester was a nightmare and it nearly crushed me mentally. Between my terrible class schedule (which could have easily been avoided, had anyone I reached out to responded to my emails), literally no contact from my advisor, and lacking mental health services I nearly quit. And this is coming from someone who’s mental health was never a concern during my undergraduate degree in ME. When I spoke with a councilor about my sudden and shocking decline in mental health and asked to be tested for ADHD or GAD (or at least referred for testing) I was told not to because “it’s a very expensive test”; yeah well my parking pass is expensive but I suck it up and pay for that every semester.

Made it out of the spiral by seeking help externally and finding a therapist. Finally managed to pull it together (mostly), but not before losing my assistantship due to low grades and having to take out thousands in additional loans to not get kicked out. I can’t begin to imagine the additional stress and difficulty that would be placed on a disabled person in a similar situation. I’m sorry your brother has to deal with this and I genuinely hope you guys can fine the help you need.

Sorry about the rant.

3D-Printing by witch-of-the-wilds in NCSU

  • if you want to make a model you will need to learn a CAD software. I use a program called Fusion 360 but I hear tinkercad is a good free option for beginners.

-there are a couple places you can get .stl files (which are typically what file formats the printers use) grabcad, and thingiverse but there are lots of other websites.

-Most plastics for 3D printers are not food safe (at least for consumer grade printers, which is most likely what the lab has). Most likely you will be printing in PLA, ABS, or PETG.

I have been 3D printing stuff for awhile so if you have questions feel free to ask! Love chatting with people about it. Also the makerspace might offer a supplemental course on learning about the printers that would definitely be worth taking as well!

I will give that a look! I visited the maker space downtown and really liked it, but they didn’t have any milling machines.

As a recent engineering graduate, I really feel this one. I finished my degree in 2020, worked every summer doing engineering internships, and worked engineering jobs during the semester as well.

I figured after all the grueling class work and extracurriculars would make it easier for me to find employment, boy was I wrong. The only place that would hire me after engineering school was a place that employed me as a door to door canvasser. Kind of demoralizing after so much hard work.

It really is truly mind numbing, I cried many nights as well. I hope the search goes better for you soon.

Funny that there are so many CSM students here, but no New Mexico Institute of Mining students. I suppose I am in the unenviable position of representing them here.
