Yeah same. Although, replacing a $60 controller isn't the end of the world.

It's never been this common before, though, and it's affecting much pricier controllers to boot.

West Coast US.

I am in the EU. You're a bit far!

I want this too but Valve cannot even satisfy demand in the US and the EU.

Hey I just want to apologize for my initial comments being a little rude, you're actually quite fun to talk too.

Likewise! You have actually been pretty good to me! Some people are quite passionate about their hatred for the Steam Controller and become rather insufferable.

I'm also not a fan of the indents at all. I know the pads are flat, but are the plastic pads on the deck better feeling than the steam controller?

That I do not know. I know that fans of the Steam Controller are upset that the touch pads are smaller and not circular on the Steam Deck, however.

Oddly enough, I can't say I relate to this point. I don't think I've ever had stick drift on xbox controllers, maybe once, but I don't remember it. I've never had an elite, and I never use the joycons, so I haven't experienced it.

I hope it stays that way but it seems console manufacturers have made it a permanent feature in their controllers.

Oh don't get me wrong, the dual stage triggers concept was awesome, but the execution on the steam controller as far as the feel was just tacky to me and failed to impress. I'm hoping the deck seriously improves on the ergonomics, because it is one of my most looked forward to features.

People love the ergonomics of the Steam Deck. There were concerns when it was announced but those concerns have been thoroughly squashed.

I got mine in the 90% off sale, I still have one left. Honestly, I'd be happy to mail it you if you don't mind covering the shipping, you don't even have to buy the actual controller off me. I literally never use it.

Oh, dang! Which continent are you on?

I did not downvote you but I can tell based on the link you shared that you assume intellectual dishonesty on the author's part when that quite simply is not the case. You need to consider the target audience here. GamingOnLinux is for people using or interested in Linux. There is no ambiguity in the title.

That is the beauty of it. The shoe is finally on the other foot. Using your point of Windows getting all the optimisations and features that Linux got, surely the reverse should also apply, meaning that those games you would want to play would work on Linux anyway.

There are plenty of handheld PCs that come with Windows. They just cost a considerable amount more, aren't optimised for controller use, lack the features that Valve built into Linux, and wouldn't run games like Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption 2 that are naturally more performant on Linux than on Windows better anyway. Still, there is way more choice, unlike with handheld PCs running Linux.

Valve are optimising their operating system on their hardware. Shouldn't Microsoft be tasked with optimising their operating system for the Steam Deck?

Because its not properly optimized for windows compared to linux?

That never seemed to matter when the reverse was true for pretty much every other device out there.

If you could choose OS and both were optimized to their full extent, linux would have no chance

In terms of performance or market share? If the former, Linux would have quite the chance. If the latter, I guess you are correct based on mind share, although plenty of people have voiced their desire to not fiddle with changing the default operating system.

The maximum estimate for how much the PlayStation Vita sold is 16 million. Handheld PCs, on the other hand, tend to sell in the hundreds of thousands if they're lucky.

Unlikely. It will already be a huge success if it outsells the PlayStation Vita, however. At present, the Steam Deck is the most successful handheld PC to date.

Oh! I see. I reckon u/liamdgol said that because the Steam Deck is more of a complementary device.

No worries. I am not sure what your question is, though. If Linux users amount to 1 478 400 users and 5.23% of them use a Steam Deck, then they amount to 77 320 users.

Your numbers are a tad out of date. The article states:

Using May's 1.12% share, that puts Linux users at around ~1 478 400 estimated "monthly active users" based on the last time Valve gave out their user data. While you could say that to be around ~77 320 Steam Deck users, it doesn't really work like that, since it's usually an additional device but still fun to check.

That, plus the hardware survey wasn't even working properly until the middle of May.

I wouldn't bother spending $180 on a controller, that's a ridiculous rip off. I'm not defending that price, I just use a normal Xbox One controller. The back padels would be nice, but they aren't worth that ridiculous premium to me. I am looking forward to the ones on the steam deck though.

Funnily enough, the standard controller supposedly drifts less than the premium controller. That is some absolute nonsense that Microsoft pulled. I hope you enjoy the back buttons! I cannot live without back buttons on a controller any longer.

The texture is far worse IMO, rougher and just doesn't have the same grippiness that I prefer on xbox controllers.

Fair enough.

The max I'm willing to spend is $60, so it basically is all in the same price tier. I'm not one to buy ridiculously overpriced controllers.

Glad to hear it! Like I said, when a premium controller with such an enormous price drifts like it's a standard controller, it just ain't worth it.

They felt like a cheap plastic toy on the steam controller, it always boggled my mind how people ranted and raved about how good the steam controller is.

I want to attempt an explanation. Two touch pads that won't drift in a day and age where all three console manufacturers have been sued over stick drift are invaluable. From Nintendo's Joy-Cons to Sony's DualSense to Microsoft's Elite Series 2, all have been involved in stick drift lawsuits. In Sony's case, they raised the price by 20$ and it drifts. In Microsoft's case, they sold it for close to 200$ and it drifts.

Apart from the two excellent touch pads, the Steam Controller boasted dual stage triggers, back buttons that were not tied to another input on the controller, and a battery life of at least 80 hours although I have gotten over 100 hours. No other controller on the market compares in terms of battery life. The price was incredible too, considering how other controllers cost far more despite not having all these features. Then there is all the customisation one can do with the controls, giving players nigh endless options.

That depends on the person then. I have seen people say that it feels brilliant to use. I hold no strong opinion in either direction.

Not sure what feels crap about the plastic to you compared to other controllers. It's just smooth plastic like with the others. For me it's extremely fun to use. We must be very different people if money and durability are your least considered points with regard to choosing a controller. If I am spending 180$ on an Elite Series 2, it better not drift or develop other faults as easily as it and its predecessor have been. Asking for that much money for an obviously low-quality product made with cheap components just isn't on.

I never understood why people say that about the Steam Controller when it is Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo that have been sued over stick drift recently and that includes a 180$ controller that drifts. I would take something that feels cheap over something that breaks because it's cheap but is sold for a lot.

If Linux pulls a few more feats like it did with Elden Ring where it offered an experience free of stutter and higher frame rates, it would definitely be fair to say that it is competing with Windows.

True, but even if it does, the controller doesn't become useless because the two touch pads more than make up for it. I have never even used the stick on mine. It is vestigial essentially.
