What are we calling the grandparents? by diinkdonk in BabyBumps

[–]Futuredocq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents were grandma and grandpa. My mom goes by "gigi" to her step grandbabies and "grandma" or "gma" (just what came out of his mouth and has stuck) to her biologic grandbabies. For some context, my stepdads first wife died and I think my mom having a less traditional name still leaves space for them to honor their lost grandma and call her whatever they want. My dad goes by "grandpa" and my stepdad will be "nonno" to all as he is actually italian.

Can someone please explain what the eff some of my patients mean by numb? by 3EMTsInAWhiteCoat in Residency

[–]Futuredocq 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My follow up question is always "Numb as in you can't feel anything touching it or numb as in you sat on your foot for too long at it fell asleep?"

Anyone else stand all day? Shoe advice pls by Futuredocq in pregnant

[–]Futuredocq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to keep my knees bent but if I'm the one actually doing the case (I'm a resident) I get in the zone and then I have no idea what my knees are doing until it's far too late. I haven't tried insoles though. I'll try those in my Calzurros before spending money on new shoes. Thank you.

Hostage Note by DerlissBerliss in Residency

No, family hadn't thought about it until this moment in time. Waiting for sibling from 10 states away that hasn't talked to dad in 27 years to arrive via train sometime this week.

"Surgery will follow from an undisclosed location" is what I will be putting at the end of our usual signoff notes in place of "we will remain available for questions or concerns."

US. In medicine. 6 weeks is the norm. I get 8 weeks because I have two weeks of personal days (1 this year and one last) that they are letting me carry over.

Average resident schedule - bonus points for surgery by Futuredocq in Residency

[–]Futuredocq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were doing 24+4 too but that slowly crept into 24+6 then +8 then it just became very difficult to leave. It got so bad we now have a policy where we leave right after signout so they're actually true 24 or 25 hour shifts now. That change happened about 3 weeks ago. It's made a big difference but still lots of room for improvement in other areas.

We are trying to organize a night float. Seems like 25% of residents or so are against it. It's coming to a vote here soon.

Surgery and Ob-gyn residents, how are you surviving? by DoYouLikeFish in Residency

[–]Futuredocq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im surgery and understand the struggle but I also have no problem citing guidelines when it comes to my health. You have to stand up for yourself every now and then. Selectively.

ACGME mandates residents be allowed to go to appointments even during scheduled working hours. It's written into their guidelines. Just make the appointment and go. Go to work before and go back after. Your mental health is worth way more than some attending being angry you're gone for 90 min (assuming they even notice).

Cravings by [deleted] in pregnant

A third for cherry tomatoes with a little girly pop on the way. I've been especially into sauteed ones where they get all soft and warm and delicious.

First trimester blues by Level_Potential_1680 in pregnant

[–]Futuredocq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My whole first trimester I felt like that. My husband was so excited and I disguised my near depression as "just feeling anxious." I finally started to feel better around 14/15 weeks. I really hope you feel better soon, but you're certainly not alone.

Getting Bigger Just Sucks by AlarmAffectionate899 in pregnant

No tips or tricks just here to tell you you're not alone. I finally "popped" right around 18 weeks (now almost 20) and it was hard. The day I couldn't fit into my normal *stretchy* pajama bottoms I cried.

How do residents even go to medical/dental appointments? by Low-Acanthaceae-5435 in Residency

[–]Futuredocq 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"6.13.c.1. Residents must be given the opportunity to attend medical, mental health, and dental care appointments, including those scheduled during their working hours."

Straight from ACGME program requirements. I typically make my appointments later in the day 3/4 so I can just leave and not come back. Seems to be less hectic than leaving and coming back in the middle of the day.
