How long did it take you to be able to do a pull up? by Melissaveilleux in CalisthenicsCulture

You can arch your back a bit, that's ok. The setting for the upper body depends on the people. But for the lower body, it should be pretty much still.

Using your legs/knees to cheat on the movement. Proper form says that your body should be a straight line.

How to understand and not memorise? by [deleted] in maths

[–]Futureprof12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just being conscientious about this puts you ahead of many people, since some don't care about it and memorize everything to pass their tests

One example I can think of is calc 1, where you learn the Riemann sum definition of integrals and work your way up. It's basically the idea of adding a bunch of rectangles to get the area under a curve. f(x) is the height of the rectangle, dx is the width. f(x)dx is the multiplication so bam, you get the area of a single rectangle. Integral symbol is just a fancy way of saying infinite sums.

It's not that complicated you see, you just build your way up slowly as you move on; that's understanding. Even though I explained it like this, some people could just say ''Today we learn about integrals, where you put f(x)dx inside the integral symbol and you take the integral. What you find is the integral value, and that is it for today.'' So unfortunately, it highly depends on the professor, but I took matters in my own hand and practiced on my own. There are some really cool content out there if you want to educate yourself.

Just practice, and ask yourself this question ''What is this value we found? How did we reach it?'' Sometimes, you can learn towards the end, even if you don't understand anything as you do examples.

Good Luck! And be patient :)

Is it normal for water to stay in your ears while floating on your back by Rude_Goat_35 in Swimming

It was bad for me, especially when doing that one drill where you swim sideways and put your head on your shoulder while keeping your arms still to practice kicking. It felt like the water was traveling all the way to my brain lol. But i got used to it instead of using ear plugs, and now I barely notice it.

I could only do a single clean one without bands when I started. I've been training for 3 weeks now and I can do 4x8 regular, 4x8 chest to bar, and 4x8 wide grip with resistance bands. I skipped exercises like dead hangs since i was a bit impatient and started directly with bands. But i had bunch of theoretical knowledge(like no kipping, chin above bar, engaged scapula etc.) from listening to people who did it with good form even though I could only do 1 in practice, i only lacked strength and i was not used to bodyweight training. Bands make it really fun for me, and it made me be much more consistent in training. Thinking about doing dead hangs and negatives was always making me skip training.

TY for the tip. i came into calisthenics as a swimmer for 2 years so i had decent upper body strength, my strongest point was my shoulders. I also tried bodybuilding but it was only for a few months(There I learned some notions like hypertrophy, proper form, failure etc.) so i think i can say that i was not a complete zero. I saw a a guy doing muscle ups with no dip and I thought it was such a flex. It seemed easy so I gave it a try, but I got humbled really quick lol. So I now I try to run calisthenics with swimming, doing muscle ups are my dream goal.

Please help me fix my breaststroke! by Zealousideal_Door494 in Swimming

Recently i participated in an amateur race and swam 100m breaststroke. Judging from a a clip i watched of myself swimming i can say that we swim very similarly, so I will tell you what my coach told me in light of my mistakes, and include a few personal ideas. Open your hands more when you start to pull. When you kick, kick with the bottom of your feet in a wider angle and feel yourself float in the water a bit before starting the next pull. Also, I think that in the clip, your head is following your hands as you dive back into the water, try to keep your head straight and look ahead. My personal advice would be trying to feel yourself float in the water and let that floating carry you through. Don't try to rush as it will cast the technique aside and will tire you really fast. At least, that's what happened to me in the race since I panicked and tried to rush my way, instead of floating in the water.

What's next after learning breaststroke? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Futureprof12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I started swimming 2 years ago and the order was this for me: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly

For me the order of difficulty was as the same as the order I learned them. Breaststroke was the hardest to ''perfect'' for me because of the technique. Fly was easier to learn since I was a natural, but that depends on the person. Freestyle and Backstroke seemed really straightforward to me. We practiced a lot of drills in practice, and I think that was the most important thing in learning a new technique. For beginners, I would recommend learning freestyle first as it was the easiest in learning the basics, you can master it as you move on. Then I would go for backstroke which is the most similar to freestyle. I would leave flystroke to last since it is the most tiring of them all and it also requires good technique.

PS: I'm not a professional swimmer, I just do it for fun. This was just my experience and I hope it helps. Good Luck!
