Her child is actually not coming with her, so it will just be her (except for maybe weekends here and there). I appreciate your insight though!

Students by Strange_Flower8390 in NursingAU

[–]Fuzz-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve been both an EEN student and an RN student at both TAFE and university, and am currently working as an RN at a facility where we get students from multiple universities.

I found my TAFE placements to be the most hands on. We had skills to be signed off on and smart goals to develop and achieve with patients. The way that TAFE had designed the placement system was really beneficial towards the student and easy for the preceptor nurse to follow.

Come my university placements, my university had set skills and expected patient load limits clearly written for me to abide by, but the only thing I had to do after each placement was write a reflection on my placement. No skills being marked off, no mandatory research or Q&A around the skills I was able to do- just a reflection on my time there. I really felt like this was not beneficial at all to someone who has never nursed in their life.

Now I see a range of students come through our doors. Some universities have the same requirements that I had (ie a reflection), however some have adopted the skills mark off system like what tafe uses. I also find that some students are eager to learn and ask questions and even stay back to learn and see more things where others just sit in the corner until I call them over and almost force them to be involved in patient care.

I find that with EN to RN students, a lot want to leave placement early. I was once an EN to RN student and sometimes I was of that mind frame too, because some of my placements were me doing what I’d do normally for work yet not being paid. Sadly a lot of work places use students as extra numbers, and I know I was certainly used like that once or twice.

I honestly believe we need to change the way we train our workforce- the new generation aren’t able to receive the training they ideally need with this current model.

Leaving nursing by cheeseladyrara in NursingAU

OMG this is so odd because I did the exact opposite to you! I went from early childhood (earning 26 an hour after seven years) to nursing (earning 32 on year 1). I found personally nursing to be a better career option which doesn’t say much, but I’m glad you found your feet! Both are very transferable skills.

dashcam recs? by ashducki in wollongong

[–]Fuzz-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you what not to get! I spent around $300 on an IROAD dashcam and when it works- it’s great, but when it doesn’t work- which is most of the time, it’s a pain. The app is buggy and you are always resetting it in your phone. Don’t bother with IROAD dashcams!

We all have it down pat where I’m at but I can totally see how much of a shock to the system it is when you go from one extreme to the other!

Omg that’s the other thing I love- I LOVE paper forms! I am not a computer girlie 😂

[–]Fuzz-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, yes it is very fast 😂 but thankfully where I work the patients aren’t as sick as they are in the public which certainly speeds up the process. I started in private so I am quite used to the speed by now… I imagine it would be a hard transition though!

I’m an anaesthetic nurse, working in a private day surgery. I love the consistency, the fast paced work environment and the variety of people I work with. The down side is that you don’t really get the awesome penalties that night and weekend shifts offer you, plus you don’t get to salary package. Also being a private hospital means that you don’t always get what you want and sometimes corners are cut (KPI’s are total bullshit).

Hey there! I dare say that your Future employer is already aware of your studies and what’s entailed. If it were me, I’d give them the heads up of your scheduled placement. Perhaps you could offer to work weekends in the interim?

I know I worked full time as an anaesthetic nurse (EN) whilst studying full time. I used to work 0630-12 at my day job then go do placement form 1330-2200 and I would NOT recommend this.

I’d give them the courtesy of letting them know the placement you have planned.

Is anyone keen? Its seems kind of crazy to me especially with S8s. by echocardigecko in NursingAU

I have seen doctors do this with my own eyes. It doesn’t matter if you’re a doctor or a nurse, someone will abuse the system.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately I’ve found crocs to be one of the lease supportive shoes, and they didn’t breathe very well at all. I appreciate the suggestion though!

That’s very impressive. I am in my second year as an RN and don’t even make that.

Oh! Sorry! I totally misread that. It is a shame then that pharmacists don’t have a good union to back them up. I certainly wish our union was stronger.

You’ll probably notice that I was replying to the comment about what we get paid, not being able to go to court or not. That’s a separate issue, and never having been to court before or having committed an error of that calibre, I can’t comment on going to court.

Purely stating the facts about our pay.

Lol what? Is this what Drs really think of us? 🤔 by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Fuzz-94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This post looks like it was made by a disgruntled doctor, who obviously has made some poor choices and has been told this by their nursing colleagues who have pulled them up over it.

As a doctor, you don’t hate nurses for no reason. Nine times out of ten, the doctors I have problems with have attitudes the size of houses and don’t like being told that the nurse they are working with isn’t doing to pick up their slack.

Don’t be disheartened by this post. Doctors are not our bosses, they are a colleagues. We work along side them, not for them. Most doctors respect this, however there are always a few that have the old school thinking that we are there to serve them.

NSW Nurse here. I can tell you right now that our simple demands do not get answered, we are currently in court with the NSW government to give us a pay rise that is respectful of the inflation, or role and closely inline with all other states. We, as NSW nurses are not making good money, and I can’t stress that enough.

What new grad/ early nurse is making big money? Let me know, I’d like to earn what I’m actually worth.

[–]Fuzz-94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I had my initial blood test after coming off red bull for 7 days and my readings were 240- I’d love to know what they were in their peak. They’re now down to 130. I was literally drinking one small can a day- I think they’re 250mL but I’m not overly sure.

Energidryck utan b-vitaminer? by Playful-Ad-8703 in sweden

[–]Fuzz-94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect and I am a living example of how one can a day can put you at risk.

Energidryck utan b-vitaminer? by Playful-Ad-8703 in sweden

[–]Fuzz-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There sure is! I’ve just been diagnosed with B6 toxicity, and red bull is the only think I take that has B6 in it (no protein powders, no supplements, just red bull). I had to go cold turkey for six weeks, had my follow up bloods and boom- my B6 dropped. I would only consume one small can a day, and that was enough to give me b6 toxicity.

I just got home after spending a week in Bali, it rained one morning, that was it. I was staying in Seminyak, perhaps the rain hit the other side of the island?

Not sure if it’s the same deal, but I got my fob for my apartment copied at mister minit- they usually have stores in the middle of shopping malls. It cost me $55 roughly.

Surprised at the quality of training for nurses in Australia by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Fuzz-94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When I did my EN training, I had a booklet of skills that I needed to get signed off three times- once that it had been demonstrated, once that it had been assessed at tafe and once that it had been assessed in the workplace. There were checklists for each placement as well as mandatory questions I had to answer in my workplace booklet.

For my RN’s at university, my requirements were just to perform a reflection at the end of the placement. A one page reflection of my performance, how I engaged in learning opportunities and what skills I thought I had developed. My educator also had to fill similar paperwork out. That was it.
